For what it is worth. I've owned several generators and found that you pay for what you get.
The cheapos just don't carry enough wattage to do anything except run a computer or a hand drill.

When I lights are out I want to stay warm, watch tv, run the microwave and browse the web.

My most recent one came from Lowes. A 10 horsepower that will keep most essential items in the house running...if I can afford the fuel.

Looks like you want a small portable generator rather than a home standby.

Generac makes reliable generators (I have one), and Lowe's is among many places they are available. For $650+tax (way less than your $1000 limit) you get 5,500 watts of power - enough to get by with fridge, pumps some lights.

Generac really excels in home standby which generally have more power (think AC) and turn on automatically. Hooked directly to your electrical panel - very slick.
