Hey all, I'm a bit of a techie, and while I was in the bath I got the sudden overwhelming urge to build a crazy-ridiculous Netbook. So here is my plan:

Buy a cheap netbook with decent resolution (and an Intel GMA 3100 - 4500 if possible) and outfit it with 2gb of ram, windows xp pro, and a 500gb harddrive.

I don't know alot about netbooks, so I'd like to know from those of you who have tinkered with them:
- do they use normal laptop (200 pin sodimm ddr2) ram?
- if they come with a ssd, can it be switched out for a normal 2.5" laptop hd?
- are there any known problems with running xp pro on a netbook?
- are there any netbooks that fit my specifications and (here is where the "help me find a deal" part comes in) can you suggest any to watch for

budget for netbook is probably 300-350, I already have the RAM & OS, and the HD's budget is another 100

A netbook has pretty much the same components as a laptop, except they usually use smaller batteries and a lower power CPU.

Some have normal laptop HD's. Other have a different style (ZIF SATA socket I think...look for more details on the HP mini 1000, it's got one of these drives)

Some are easy to upgrade, some are not.

Why do you want a netbook instead of a low-end laptop?

I'm looking for ultra-portability and tons of storage as well, I already have a badass laptop (HP DV5 series) but something more portable would be nice (seems like a laptop is the new desktop, and the netbook is the new laptop these days). Also it would be really nice for use in the field since the battery life on many is so long, they would also be really easy to charge via a solar panel (I like to consider myself a little of a field-scientist).

The other reason is that I am silly and kind of in need of a cool project to work on.

Acer Aspire One is quite upgradable with a 6 cell battery it lasts for around 7 hours. That said, MSI and I think Asus allows overclocking if you so desire. I am unaware of what battery options are available. I just purchased a Lenovo S10 which I will quickly upgrade to 2GB (The Atom processor can only handle 2) and perhaps later a larger HD and 6 cell battery. MSI and Lenovo offer 10" displays vs the 9" display of Acer and Asus. There are a few others to look at to determine best what you want, but you may want to search for netbook reviews to get a good idea what each can do.

I picked up mine for $360 shipped. Have fun!

Edit:
Here's the link for the current slickdeal on black or white low-end lenovo that I purchased. I paid a little extra for the blue one, but wanted a little color in mine.

I'd expect overclocking and a larger screen to reduce batter life, I'm sure you could calculate by how much.
