I was looking at the 5990/5992, but it's a good $50.

I have the 5982 and it seems to freeze up on me sometimes (I'm thinking the USB 1.1), and I was wondering if people had better luck, one issue I have is pausing it for 10 min. will cause the HD to restart. Also, the file names are extremely short from the USB, and I was wondering if this was changed.

Does the 5990 change these problems, only the 5992? I have a regular TV so I'm more interested in how well it plays DIVX than how well it upconverts etc.

The 5992 is a sweet little item. It plays all my downloaded movies just great with no skips at all. Costco has it for $40 now and then new and the philips outlet lets them go for less than that from time to time, refurbished. Ive purchased both the new model (I broke down and shelled out the full $50, still great value for the money youll save in blank DVDs alone.) and three refurbs. All four units work just great. Definitely worth it to upgrade IMO.

Bad news is some of the flaws you mentioned carry over. If you pause for 10 or so it will shut off the player and cut off your movie, which is a serious pain in the butt. The USB file names are still shorter than my winky Im afraid  The rumour is that there are firmware upgrades available for the 5992 that address some of these short comings, if not all.

Cheers

Upgrading is very enticing, but if you're saying that it shuts off, and if it doesn't show the file names longer, than basically it's the same thing as my 5982 (I don't have LCD/Plasma/HDTV etc.), so I don't know if it really is worth upgrading then.

BTW: Noticed that it works better if you pause the DVD and not the USB.

5992 works well. You may also look into video-help for a new firmware for 5982

However please read the thread before flashing the player
