I've been debating for about two months between the IdeaPad Y530 and the Thinkpad SL500. Use wise, its going be used for normal internet, but also some video/photo editing. The price diffence is about $200. It seems every 5 days Lenovo changes its coupons and its prices. I'm kinda hooked on Lenovo just because I've got two kids, and build quility is important. I've had a thinkpad in the past, and dropped it several times with no destruction caused.

The processor for the SL500 is definately better, the Core2 Duo T8400 with 2GB memory. I like the fact you can customize the thinkpads a little more, extra mem, fingerprint reader, and turbo mem.

If anyone out there can give me a convincing argument that one is better than the other I would definately appreciate it. They have a special coupon on all the 15" laptops to save between 5-15% off.

Thanks in advance.

i don't know much about the Y..... other then its just a lenovo

the thinkpads are legendary even the new SL is based on the TP line
i just saw this info at FW so it might be better to go with the cheaper of the 2
UPDATE

Understand that these are not real ThinkPads. They sort of look like one (though not really, with the glossy lid) but they don't have lot of the features common to other ThinkPads (ThinkLight, roll cage, magnesium case) and the BIOS identifies the laptop as an IdeaPad, not a ThinkPad. This last part isn't going to be an issue for most people, but it's proved a real headache for those trying to run Linux. Other ThinkPad models are made to be Linux-friendly.
