Radar detectors are only illegal in one state (Virginia), and the District of Columbia.

Vote 1 for the Valentine 1. Bought it when I got my IS 300 in the summer of 2003. But I don't know if you can do deals on it - I just bought it from them. I know that once you buy it, I don't think you ever have to replace it. In fall of 2007, something wasn't working right so I sent it in (turns out it was the power wire) and just got it upgraded and checked out at the same time for $85. Probably won't need to do anything to it for another few years.

Agreed with others before me. Valentine 1 is the best one out there. It's NOT cheap @ $400 but it's truly been rated as the best one out there. You can find full page ads for them in any of the car magazines as well as their website. I've had mine for 5 years and never an issue. You can find them all over ebay but you're not really saving that much. The other thing to look at is that if there is a problem or if they update the software, you can send it in and for under $100 you get a new one.
In fact, I hard wired mine into my rear view mirror and have a bracket that holds it just under the mirror so it's not sitting in the windshield looking to be stolen. It goes on when I turn the car on and off when the car is off. Nice setup if you ask me.
