I always had the impression a lot of those baby things were available cheap used at garage sales or goodwill etc. You know people use them for a few years then get rid of them. You may be able to find a new one cheaper and easier nowadays with cheap imported goods flooding the market too for all I know.

Look in your yellow pages for "Once Upon A Child" stores, They sell gently used baby stuff pretty cheap. They are a chain, but limited. Related to Plato's closet. Their stuff is much nicer than most thrift stores because they select only the best for resale.
