I am thinking about buying a 16Gig Ipod Touch Refurbished (1st Gen) from the Apple Shop. It's about $218. I see they have the Second Generation not refurbished at about $300. Are there any deals anywhere on Ipods? Is it worth buying the 1st gen refurbished and paying for a firmware update at $10 instead of buying the second generation at $300. Will they have all the same applications and games or will that be different? I know I have a lot of questions and any advice will be appreciated.

I would get the second generation. The second generation has a faster processor. So if you plan on playing games on it, it will run them smoother. I believe the processor in the second generation Touch is faster than the iPhone 3G's so it is currently the fastest portable touch screen device Apple makes. (Source: http://toucharcade.com/2008/11/23/2nd-generation-ipod-touch-faster-than-iphone/) It also has a built in mic which the 1st generation is missing and there are some apps on the app store that require use of a mic. [EDIT] They don't have a built-in mic, but the 2nd generation does have a built-in speaker which the 1st gen didn't have. Thanks for correcting me Kardon 86

It all depends on what you want to use the Touch for, but I would go with the 2nd generation just for future proofing sakes. Then again I'm kind of obsessed, I have an iPhone 3G that I bought on launch day and am planning on replacing it in June (a year later) with the new model that is supposed to be coming out.

i agree with dishing out the extra for the 2nd Gen touch. I have the first gen and its great, but i would pay the difference right now if i had the chance. I'm sure there's some websites out there explaining the difference between the two, and if it was $150 difference i would say no way, but i would do the newer one, especially when they come out with an app the the 1st gen can't handle sometime down the line.

The ipod touches don't have a built in mic. Correct me if I am wrong and I hope that I am.

2nd gen allows you to plug in any 3.5 mm headset to it. So a blackberyy headset that is 3.5mm will work with iPod touch 2nd gen. Also 2nd gen is slimmer I believe and longer battery life.

I would get the 2nd ben. Not only are they slimmer but the built in speaker is nice. As a matter of fact I'm replying to this thread on my Touch. :)
