Hey, I have this computer: http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/ca/en/ho/WF06b/12132708-12133156-12133158-12133158-12133158-79732772-80127167.html
I need some Ram (min 1gb) to help me be able to handle intense photoshopping on this computer. That being said, I need it done in the least amount of money. Could someone tell me what type of memory I need, and what the cheapest amount shipped would be?
Max reppage for all involved!

You can go to crucial.com or memoryx.net
Both sites will run a test on your machine and tell how much memory your machine currently has, what type of memory and how many free slots are there
then post it here and we can look it up from there for finding a good deal

Assuming you are running a 32-bit version of Windows, the maximum amount of RAM your PC will recognize is 4GB. So either get 2 sticks of 2GB each, or 4 sticks of 1 GB each.

make sure your mother board will recognize 2GB sticks. mine won't so i have to get 1gb sticks or lower. and 32bit will only recognize 3 to 3.5gb of ram.

Yes, your point is well taken, but since the OP is a obviously a noob regarding memory/RAM stuff, I did not want to get too far into the 32bit vs. 64 bit RAM stuff; I was just trying to point out to him/her that 4GB was the maximum to install, even though their HP PC could physically take up to 8GB
...make sure your mother board will recognize 2GB sticks...
you make a good point, but according to Crucial, his system does recognize 2GB sticks
OP. Excellent deals come around about once per week on RAM. You need 4 GB total (2x2GB) or 4x 1GB. I suspect (after looking at that page u posted) that ur computer has 4 slots with 2 occupied by 512MB (half a GB) of ram for a total of 1gb.
also about your computer from HP:
Memory Installed 1 GB
Maximum allowed 8 GB (4 x 2 GB) (64-bit OS)
4 GB* (4 x 1 GB) (32-bit OS)
Speed supported PC2-4200 MB/sec
Type 240 pin, DDR2 SDRAM
You could either:
#1 Add 2 of the 1GB ram sticks to each remaining slot for a total of 3 GB (http://shop.ebay.com/items/__DDR2-2x1gb_W0QQLHQ5fSiteWideConditionZNew13180QQ_flnZ1Q Q_scZ1QQ_sopZ15QQ_ssovZ1QQ_trksidZp3286Q2ec0Q2em28 2). (cheap but excellent option would be the corsair ram or the crucial ballistix... numerous buying options ) OR
#2 Remove the 2 sticks of 512 and add 2 sticks of 2GB of ram (http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?sduid=1671&t=1179103&highlight=RAM)...(most expensive option, very little benefit with 4gb over 3 gb ram) OR
#3 Remove the 2 sticks of 512 and add 4 sticks of 1GB ram (probably also ery cheap esp if shopping on ebay)...
Easiest and best bang for buck would be to add 2 sticks of 1 GB ram for total of 3GB...
if u want to post what u are considering buying I can help you confirm that it will be compatible.

Not true; max is technically 4GB, however address space will be given to hardware like video cards first.
Depending what sort of extra devices he has, he'll see anywhere from 2.8 - 4GB (possibly even less than 2.8 I suppose if the user is sporting some serious video cards); though most likely in the 3-3.8GB range. I have a computer running 32 bit Windows Server 2003, it recognizes 3.5GB RAM. And then there's PAE, but that's a whole different can of worms, and not really relevant to the vast majority of consumers.
3.2GB is just some random number that people like throwing around a lot, I can't figure out why :)

I did not want to go into discussion of 4Gb or not. The point was to mention that he will not be able to utilize whole of 4GB

i would go with finding a deal on two 2gb sticks of pc2-6400 ram since your motherboard can handle that. that way, if you ever get a new desktop, you can likely use this ram for that. also, it's better to have ram sticks in pairs that are dual channel.
i recently got two 1gb sticks that will be $5 after a $45 mail in rebate and before that i accidentally purchased two 2gb sticks (that my computer couldn't recognize) that would have been $10 after mail in rebate so you can easily get a good deal for either method you do.
here is one being advertised. 4gb of crucial ram for $16 after a mail in rebate

the deal posted above from fry's or the deal posted in my first post above are very reasonable choices for new ram. As stated, buy one of these sets, remove the 2 512MB sticks and replace them with the new RAM. voila.
BTW. RAM prices are very good right now IMHO and I expect them to go up by summer (basically ram has been overproduced and a bunch of companies plan to scale back producton)

this one costs you $8 per 2gb stick. go for that. it's likely you can use it in the future to boost a new computer should you get one.

if you wait too long, that deal may disappear. i'm sure you will find another one but you may have to wait even longer. i waited too long to get the deal i wanted and it took another one and one half weeks to get back to that price when i finally decided that i would go with it.
