xGPS version 1.2 was just released yesterday. It is the first free turn-by-turn GPS application for the iPhone. It uses Google Maps to route your trip and features text-to-speech to prompt you. You can also download sections of Google Maps to your phone so you don't have to stream them (no cell data connection required). You can find the app in Cydia on your jailbroken iPhone.

Try adding http://apt.modmyi.com/ to your sources if you don't see it in Cydia, although it should be there by default.
That's awesome. Can't wait to try it out.
edit: I loaded it up and it looks pretty promising. I have nowhere to go right now though so I'll try it out later when I go out to get graffiti remover (don't ask). :)
I don't think this was the first turn-by-turn map application for iPhone though.
There is one on the App Store for 20 bucks that does turn by turn as well, but the one on Cydia is free.
You can read about it here: G-Maps Website (http://www.xroadgps.com/Maps/GMapforiPhone/tabid/2463/Default.aspx)
G-Maps uses Navteq maps.

It's not the first turn by turn GPS app, but it's the first FREE turn by turn GPS app and the first GPS app with text-to-speech navigation. You can also download Google Maps to the phone and use them even when you have no data connection. So no streaming of Google Maps is required.

I have no idea if xGPS will work on firmware that old. I don't think any of the devs have tested it on anything earlier than 2.0. Any reason you haven't updated your firmware? 2.2.1 is out now and it fixes a lot of bugs and adds some nice new features.

I just never got around to it. Is there an easy way to upgrade the firmware? Im not sure how to do it b/c I bought the phone unlocked.

I'm afraid to try xGPS, I heard it was buggy. I have G-Map ver1.2 which tells you distance to turn. It was taken out of v1.3 because it broke the Apple agreement -- boo Apple. It works ok, the file is awfully big since it's all downloaded to the phone. It's still not a good GPS by any standards. It misses features like intersection, location services is a bit off (Google much better), and it doesn't give me the best routes. The new Apple firmware is supposed to give us turn-by-turn anyways via Google maps and I think that will be 1000% better than this.
