What is ribbon in the printer?

hello I am David.
I have HP printer which is not worked properly. some suggest me that if my printer need new ink cartridges or damage the ribbon of printer.

So my question is that what is ribbon in printer?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Do they still use ribbons? The last time I remember having a ribbon printer was during the reign of King Tutankhamen. They stopped making those for the average home user a zillion years ago.

Now most people have ink or laser printers. What model and make do you have?
