I'd say pretty mehh. Not bad, but about what you should expect to pay online. That said, if you have an offer with a liberal return policy, and you or a friend can evaluate product within that time period, I'd say give it a shot. You won't find a new combo of that caliber for that price. It is a deal if you get a perfectly functional d60 + lens for that price. That is just one idiot's opinion. Some here will tell you if you are sacrificing warranty coverage you should skip it. Perhaps if you are skeptical you can pick up an extended warranty. I have no idea if they cover refurb models. Good luck.

That's a great deal. Best I've seen prior was $400 at Cameta Camera. Lot of camera and lens for the money.

As has been stated, $400 is the regular rate around here for these. Be sure that the camera you're buying is:

-USA, and not gray market (gray market means it came from another country; it still works, you will just have a harder time with canon repair service)
-Actually refurbished - cleaned, tested, and recertified by Canon or at least a reputable dealer - not just wiped off and shoved back in a box
-That the lens is actually VR. Some shady sellers will show a picture of a VR lens, but not mention VR in the description, and just send you the absolutely horrible non-VR version of the lens.
-That the seller is legit, and not some poorly rated site (check resellerratings.com if possible)

Even if it's a USA Nikon D60, he'd probably have trouble getting Canon USA to repair it under warranty.

If you're set on the Nikon path, consider the D80/D90/D200 rather than the D40/D40X/D60. The cheapest Nikon cameras cannot auto-focus with lenses that don't have internal motors (anything that's not AF-S or AF-I). If you buy a slightly more expensive Nikon camera, it has the motor drive in the camera to auto-focus with the less expensive older Nikon AF lens designs. With the D60, you're stuck shopping only for AF-S lenses.

With the D80 and above you have the option of getting slightly older lenses without the internal motors. Each company has a different name for the lenses with motors inside...BIM=Tamron, AF-S=Nikon, HSM=Sigma. All of the lenses with motors seem to carry a premium right now so the older motorless lenses are much cheaper. The extra you pay for the D80, you'll save on one lens.
