Budget is around $500, not sure if that is possible.

I don't really have any pref with the spec of the laptop...
I would be ok with any core duo chip, 1gig of ram (2 if possible).

The main thing I'm looking for is that the laptop is extremely light. This will be used mainly for word processing on the road. 2lbs? lighter?

I dont really like the net books, so I was wondering if there were any other smaller sized notebooks that weren't as crappy as the netbooks =)

Thx!

To get down to that 2lb weight and $500 price you'll have to look at the "mini" laptops. They make them as big as 12" screen, and between 2 & 3lbs, like the Dell Inspiron Mini 12: http://www.dell.com/home/laptops

I have seen these for in the high $300's.

They even have a Mini 12 with Windows XP for $449.

I thought u said Netbooks are crappy

Just to tell you that making the screen bigger in Dell Mini will not change its processor

It is still Intel Atom processor not Core 2 Duo

For your budget a Core 2 Duo machine would be tough to get as of now

AND, as soon as you're talking Core 2 Duo, you're talking a non-Mini machine that is going to be north of 3.5lbs, and a lot more expensive. The OP is going to have to choose between "portability+low price" or "processing+heavier".

I not saying that you mentioned anything wrong. I dint mention Dell Mini or other netbooks earlier just becoz he mentioned that he wanted Core 2 Duo processor.

seems that after looking at a few products, it makes a lot of sense now that i may have to give up my core duo processor....
