Currently have a 7.x setup with JBL S12II's up front with Polk center channel and matching sides/rears. My wife and I are moving into a new house and I have a LOT of space. I may end up getting 2 subs, but we need some bump now that we are out of the apartment. Looking for particularly reputable brands and would like to spend ~$300. Of course closer to free would be nice too :)

Suck it up and invest in a decent sub. HSU 10" should be comparable to a lot of 12" subs you might be considering.
STF-2 (http://www.hsuresearch.com/products/stf-2.html)
Or if you wanted a pair of subs, you'd look at these bad boys:
ULS-15 DualDrive (http://www.hsuresearch.com/products/uls15dualdrive.html)
Total Amplifier Power (RMS): 2000W short term
Bass Extension: 15 Hz - 1 dB
Woofer: 15 Inches X 2
Crossover: Bypassable 24 dB/Oct, continuously variable 30 - 90 Hz low pass filter
But why stop there when you can get four?
ULS-15 QuadDrive (http://www.hsuresearch.com/products/uls15quaddrive.html)
In all seriousness though, I talked my budget-conscious father-in-law into buying the STF-1 (an 8" sub) to replace a JBL 10" sub (Northridge Series), and he was skeptical, but when it arrived and he heard it, he was glad he got it.
