I need a new notebook. Price is a factor but I'm not bound by it.
Priorities:
1) battery life
2) weight
3) heat
I do not want discrete graphics, blu ray, or anything that resembles a multimedia computer. I just want a business laptop for class and for airplane flights ETC.

The Dell XPS M1330 is a good very portable laptop:
http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/xpsnb_m1330?c=us&cs=04&l=en&ref=lthp&s=bsd
Start with the cheapest config, leave the processor and memory alone, change hard drive to 7200rpm SATA for $50 for much better performance (go solid state if you can afford that). Upgrade the battery from 37Whr to 85Whr for $70.
Total price should be $869 + tax + free ship
Dell XPS M1330 - Starts at under 4lbs
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T6400 (2.0GHz/800Mhz FSB/2MB cache)
Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium Edition SP1
1 Yr Ltd Warranty, On-site Service, and 1 Yr Tech Support
13" LCD PANEL AND WEBCAM Standard Display with 2.0 Megapixel Webcam
3GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz
320GB SATA Hard Drive (7200RPM) with Free Fall Sensor
CD/DVD burner (DVD+/-RW Drive)
Intel® Integrated Graphics Media Accelerator X3100
Dell Wireless 1395 802.11g Mini Card
85Whr Lithium Ion Battery (9 cell) - (Up to 8 hours of battery life)
High Definition Audio 2.0
Check out the Vostro 1320 on Dell SB too, you'll come out a little cheaper, but it won't have some of the XPS extras.
Lenovo also has the X200S, and this coupon (20% Off Coupon USPWEEKEND Ends 04/27) brings it down to around $900-ish. 12" screen is too small I think but the weight comes down to under 3lbs.
