I just purchased Eee 1000HE Netbook. It has built in BT, uses a Intel Atom N280 1.66GHz processor, and is loaded with Windows XP Home.

I saw the Ambicom BT GPS Receiver a few weeks ago on FW for $20 AR @ Frys. It's $30 AR now: http://shop4.frys.com/product/5504110 . And here's the home site for this product: http://www.ambicom.com/prod_detail.php?pid=34&pname=Bluetooth%20GPS

I'm wondering how practical it would be to have this very portable netbook multitasking as a large display GPS unit by just coupling it with the Ambicom BT GPS Reciever.

If I'm understanding this right, I'll need to have NMEA 0183 compliant GPS software loaded on my netbook to make this work.

Is there good GPS software that can be aquired free or cheap?

Any others have experience doing something like this? Advice or comments? Does this seem practical for regular use to anyone with experience?

This thread did not get a response last April. I have the same question. I'm using a 2006 MS Streets :& Trips with Bluetooth GPS. It works but I want to get updated maps. Anyone with a cost effective solution. Typing this on my Aspire ONE netbook!
