i'm not trying to get the CHEAPEST thing. i realize the prices on ext HD's have come down a ton (from the $250 i paid on a 200gb in 2005 --- yes - it was a slick deal at the time!)

Anyone have a link to a product i can buy today?

The best deals per gig are the larger ones nowadays. You can always get 500 giggers for around 50-60 or so at Newegg and some other places on sale. If your priority is to get the lowest price then Geek.com still carries some smaller HDs for slightly cheaper but its not as good a deal per gig.

Gone are the days when Office Depot used to occaisonally have 10 buck 100-160 Pata drives or the weekly 20-30 buck rebate deals on 200 gig drives.

The focus on sales were 500 a little a while ago but now they seem to be focused on 1TB and 1.5 TB though sometimes you see a deal on inbetweener -- 750 or so drive.

You would have to get a separate case though. If you look at Newegg there are external 3.5" cases for less than 20.

Theres the Antec MX100 for 30 I was looking at. Its more than 20 but its a well known brand.

Unfortunately the rebate deals for external cases also are over. I remember a year or more ago there were tons of rebate deals over and over for the better case --- the Antec MX-1 as low as 15-25 with rebate. Now everyone is selling it for an insane 50-75 ! Thats nuts. I got one back when it was dirt cheap and I wish I had bought two of them. Same with the PC cases. Right before Compusa went under , they and other stores were selling the CM 690 as low as 35-45 with rebates for months and months, deal after deal.

Ive never tried these but they are under 20 as are many others. You might want to try the ones with reviews on them to be on the safe side.

I dont know if its still a factor but some posters used to differentiate the cases depending on chipsets --- some were better than others they claimed.
Also some of these cases have gig limits for HDs which may factor in your choice if you want to upgrade to a 1TB or larger later on.

Compare that to --- I guess it comes out pretty close either way.

160/250 gig $56
