I usually search for the component I want and then look at the details of the product. Then if you scroll down the details page you will see a link called "samples". Click on the one you want and then just fill out the info.

I have better luck with IE, instead of Firefox. I also found out that I can't use my school email address during the checkout process even though that's what I used to sign up for it.

Put your school name there. You can still have it sent to your home address.

I got a few voltage regulators and Schottky diodes for a project I am working on. It just depends on what your application is: Digital, power, battery charging, analog, DAC, ADC, etc.
Country code for USA is 1 I believe.

You should make something useful like an energy harnessing device. You can even get some of their high end microcontrollers as a free sample. You just have to design a board and have the board maker solder it on for you.

Apparently they are big enough that a few free samples doesn't affect them very much. They are hoping when you stop being a student you will buy their parts instead of some other company's.
