I actually did some research on this last year... people who updated to the "2009" maps said there was a lot of stuff that still was not on the maps, like streets and houses and businesses that had been there for a few years. You might be better off going with a different brand, because from what I've heard, there is no way to legally get the updates for free, unless you just bought the unit brand new. They'll know if your unit has been activated, and how long.

If you are still looking for the maps, I was just at a superwalmart (OKC) and they had the 2009 map update on clearance. The tag said the price was $49, but there was a clearance sticker on the item that said $20. Could not scan it to check the price since it was hanging on one of those anti-theft type hooks.
