Hey all,
I am looking for a cheap web hosting service. I currently have my domain name registered, I just wanted some cheap hosting space...no need for a lot of space or bandwidth as it is just a small personal site. I do however need MySQL and Joomla fuinctionality, does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

Have a search through the Tech Support forum for threads about hosting. It's often discussed.

www.dreamhost.com don't know how good it is, but then again you can do a bit of homework! one hear hosting for $10!
I use http://www.hostpc.com (http://www.hostpc.com/) and have been quite happy with them. Plans start at $13.95/year

I use dreamhost.com and i can't really complain for $10 a year, i'm not using it for a live site but i'm doing a few different projects i didn't want to do on another hosting package. You get a lot of features for your money, their admin backend does take some getting used to. I'd go for it for a starter page.
Doesn't promo code "777" always work at dreamhost.com? It's worth a try anyways....

I personally don't care for 1and1... That is my opinion though, others may like it, the one thing that pisses me off is any ftp account you create has your customerid then you create the ftp account, so it would be harder to remember 123456789_whatever versus creating your own ftp account whatever for your domain. I also have dreamhost and you can create whatever as long as it's not in use on the server you are being hosted on... that is just my two cents...

I have actually heard hostgator is pretty good, then again who can actually use unlimited bandwidth and transfer? It's just a marketing ploy. For the money you can't go wrong!

Hi,
I am using Dreamhost. I paid near $10 for one year web hosting plan during the Independence Day promotion. If you don't want to pay for web hosting, you can try free web hosting from Hostrator.com, doteasy.com, 110mb.com and 000webhost.com.

HostPC also had some deal like that which I got , 10 bucks or close to that a year.
Thats one thing, a lot of these places have these weird gimmicky deals intermittently but they are hard to know in advance when theyll pop up.
Another thing is --- I really hate to mention any place now since all these places have a few tech support people looking after a gazillion accounts and what can you expect for 10 bucks a month or 10 bucks a year !??? Thats like bargain basement stuff. So with any firm you see supporters and tons of bashers though obviously some are better than others but its often hard to tell. Even good firms change over time and often become horrible after a few years as they grow larger.
In general though HostPC has a rep of having an OK support staff because they are smaller. Their ads dont seem as impressive -- their packages dont have unlimited this and that but as people say, thats a marketing gimmick. There are other limits like CPU usage in the fine print, if you affect the operation of the zillions of other users crammed onto the same server as you, they will disable your account and even kick you off. These other limits severely limit many 10 buck and other cheapo accounts. So you could say HostPC is a lot more honest.
Dreamhost --- is popular at dealsites but has been bashed a lot for a string of problems the last 2 years or so. They may be OK now. They often have cheap deals posted at deal sites by various posters. I have an account with them through one of those cheapo deals.
1@1 is a gigantic firm that came from Europe and started their entry into the US offering free 2-3 year accounts. They have the usual --- gobs of stuff free, tons of bandwidth and space ads that many sleazy firms use. Some people say they are a good bargain while there is a sizable group of bashers who say they are too large --- zero support. I actually have an account with them.
One thing you should look for is a forum for users since tech support isnt always available, its good to have access to other users to
find out whats going and to get advice.

Hi,
I think Dreamhost is better as it is offering unlimited storage, unlimited bandwidth, free domain name with WHOIS privacy and now with up to $75 free Google Adwords credit.
Although there is no "One Year Web Hosting at the price of below $10" deal now, one can use coupon code such as WKH50 to get $50 off web hosting plan. :D

I did more investigating since Im looking into Vbulletin/VBadvanced vs. SMF/Tiny Portal --- Vbulletin actually has a forum where they talk about good webhosting firms and I think I tend to believe their reviews more than most review sites etc.
One thing about review sites most are fake --- advertisements disguised as reviews that are paid for by the firms. Even Vbulletin may have some spammers on them and also you get the usual scattershot of rave reviews for almost any firm and bashing too. However, there are a few that seem to be mentioned a lot.
One is Hostgator. Yes there are some bashing posts but the good ones seems to vastly outnumber the bad ones. The one thing you have to watch out for is they are the typical huge firm that promises unlimited this and that like DreamHost. So you worry about overselling resources and how much tech support you actually get. Obviously being so cheap and promising so much --- you have take their ads with a grain of salt.
I think the main thing that surprised me was there are actual posts there by people running forums that claim you can run moderate sized forums on these cheapo accounts. I was starting to get the idea the 10 buck deals were pretty much a fantasy --- you had to quickly go to a dedicated server for even small sized forums, but I guess not.
In the past I use to see tons of complaints about how that was the case , that running even tiny forums etc often violated the CPU usage limit causing Dreamhost and others to shutdown your site even with a small amount of members making all the disk and bandwidth limits in the ads a joke. However, people say they can run a moderately sized forum on Hostgator though some bashers have complained about the same stuff --- tech problems and lack of support. However the good posts outweigh the bad.
With DH Im a little leery, they seem to try hard but they did have a lot of problems in the past and many people complain about the CPU/resource limits. I see way more bashers than ravers though there are a few pro-DHers who say they relaxed the CPU limits somewhat and Ive seen one or two people claim they were running small forums on DHs cheapo accounts. Whether thats indicative of the avg persons experience I dont know.
With DH you do get the domain name which I dont think is included in Hostgator. However some people like to use a separate firm for their domain names just in case they have problems with the webhosting firm. 1&1 is usually among the cheapest domain name registration firms, they include the private info feature but you hear the usual bashing about how hard it is to transfer names with 1&1. I dont know if that is true since Ive never transferred a domain name from them to another place.
