Update: Emailing them from their website works great. They will call you directly and they will have a written record of your complaint.
You can also call 1-800-824-9081 and at the voice menu say "cancel service".

I called DirecTV to see what counter offers they had in place. I am only a Select Choice customer from 1997 and have a 40 hour Tivo unit, and get free local channels. So my monthly bill after taxes is now $51.

Current deals:
$10 off a month for the next 12 month - no commitment
OR
$100 credit on your bill - no commitment
AND/OR
Free channels for a few months - no commitment
AND/OR
Miscellaneous DVR type of freebies/discounts - normally 2 yr commitment required.

Original posting deals that were going on:
Here is what the rep outlined (they know about the Dish Network special):

Upgrade Tivo to 80 hour free, and gives you a $100 rebate on top of that
2 months Premium service free
6 months of Showtime free
3 months of Starz free

Hmmm....decisions, decisions.

Good luck!

well, I called the number in the OP (just the regular customer service number?) and said " cancel service" when prompted.

Got to talk to Ann (very friendly and helpful) and all I have to say is DirecTV just won major brownie points in my book. they are willing to offer a lot to keep you as customer.

My new deal:
- $10 HD access - FREE FOR 12 MONTHS
$65.99 Choice Extra Package - 230 channels (ncludes sports pack)
- $20 OFF for 12 months
- $5 OFF for 24 months
FREE STARZ, SHOWTIME FOR 6 MONTHS (do not have to call to cancel. they will roll off)
FREE HBO 3 MONTHS (call after 3 months to cancel)

EQUIPMENT OFFERS:
FREE 2nd HD DVR RECEIVER (waived the technician charge) - requires you sign a new 2 year contract

$47.99 + $6/month (2nd DVR) = $53.99/month
+
$250 ONE TIME CREDIT

needless to say, I'm staying! thanks OP and DirecTV

Customer of 11 years and never late on my bill. My discounts were ending so I called in to see if I can get my discounts renewed since I truly can not afford the regular price and need a discount to stay with them or else I would need to cancel. They said there are no discounts available at this time. I guess I would need to look to the cable company to get a cheaper basic service.

I would not sign up or change a directv package right now. This week they are supposedly coming out with a 5 tuner DVR and I would hate to be stuck with the old tech by signing up or committing to now.

DISH is offering 4 DVR's but like many I have DTV and have had some issues. I will call them and try to cancel today and see what they say since one of the dish DVR's offered is a HD!

don't accept it, ask for more, that's what they offered me but I regret it, it's all crap, it might be 99$ but you're getting yourself into another 2 year commitment and a 4.99/monthly lease fee. For me, with tax included it was 137$. Not much of a deal.

Yea, they are shoting themselves in the foot. Now that money is getting tight, folks are probably going to look for better offers. DTV does not seem hungry for business like the other companies. I'm going to make the switch. It can only get better.

This is what I was offered on Friday.

- 6 months FREE. (basic family plan)
- 6 months Free movie channels. HBO-CINEMAX etc.

I spoke to a representative in Spanish, he kept raising the offers when I kept rejecting them. I already had DishNetwork installed so I did not take it.

DTV is probably cutting back on the handouts because of the hit they took on the Best Buy HD Advantage deal. They wrote a big check to Best Buy for all those "new" customers. LOL

I called CS yesterday and told them I wanted to cancel my service because I did not want to pay the fees associated with upgrading to HD, I received a gentleman who said they would like to keep me as a customer I have been with them for over 3 years. He first offered me two free HD receivers I said that time warner cable already offered me to HD DVR's he then upped his offer to one free HD DVR receiver and another for $99. He also gave me a credit for $120 for having HBO and gave me 6 months of all movies channels for free. Figured I would let everyone know of the deals that are possible.

Just got a new DVR (not HD), waived the $19.95 "handling/delivery/install" fee + $10 off a month for 12 months - 2 year new committment though --(.

Mentioned a possible switch to Dish as existing DVR is dying. Very friendly service, no hassles.

Opps - no charge for the DVR!!

Just a side note, but you can just subscrib to one premium channel, and if you see something you want to watch on another channel, just switch your service on the directv website. You can only do this once every 24 hours or something I think, but I've been doing it for about a year and havent had any extra charges. $12 for all the premium channels :look:

haha nice play...rep for slick

Unfortunately that doesn't work anymore. It has been a few years since that worked. They now will charge $10 if you do not keep the premium for 30 days.

what extra channels are going to be available?

From what I have read we can probably expect the following:

Balancing of HD between D10 and D11
Move the 9 legacy MPEG2 HD to MPEG4
74 - Universal HD
78 - HDNet Movies
79 - HDNet
206/73 - ESPN HD
209/72 - ESPN2 HD
245/75 - TNT HD
281/76 - HD Theater (was Discovery HD Theater)
501/70/509 - HBO East HD
537/71/543 - Showtime East HD
Add additional HBO HD channels (per the previous HBO announcement)
All of the new premium sports packages will be MPEG4 (ex: Sunday Ticket, ...)
East and West DNS all to MPEG4 (West already announced)
99 - PPV HD (MPEG2) eventually shut down
A few may need to wait for D11 (or may be added to D10 when D11 is safely in orbit)
290 - Disney Channel HD
292 - Toon Disney HD
297 - Boomerang HD
307 - ESPNEWS HD
311 - ABC Family
Others that may be available (Travel Channel HD, more movie HD premiums, ...)
Lots more HD LIL (at least 100 HD LIL by year-end 2008 - 84% of U.S.)

Existing customer here, with 4 months left on the contract. Looking to upgrade from SD to HD. After 5 calls, this is the best they'd do --

HD DVR $99 + $19 shipping
$10 credit per month for 12 months (the guy couldn't get this to go through so ended up doing an upfront credit of $120 to the account)

Not great, but what can you do? After 5 calls, I just wanted to get it overwith.

You are incorrect. After the website changed now you just have to hit cancel on the premium you have. Then it will show the option of exchanging with any of the others, and the side it explains that you can't CANCEL for 30 days, but you can exchange between them at any time since you are already paying for one. I just switched from hbo to showtime for this weekend since it was a free preview on hbo and had no problems with the "exhange" button but it took a while to take effect for some reason even though it emailed me right away saying it was changed (never took but a few seconds before).

You are probably right. But, like myself, most people that used to do this did not subscribe to any premium and used that method. Unfortunately that does not work for folks that don't subscribe to a premium. Thanks for the clarification.

Oh, I did not know you meant that, but if you subscribe you one you are able to exchange it for any of the others while only paying for one of them. Only problem with this for me is if 2 good fights come on hbo and showtime at the same time otherwise with shows and what not they repeat all through the week so I can watch something on hbo on sunday, and switch to showtime and watch whatever then. Did not have to worry about this until a couple weeks ago when my 6months free showtime ran out

No, it will only work if you subscribe to one of them. If you pay for one you can change to any of the others, but only like once a day. As far as boxing, just check hbo/showtime saturday nights in the guide to see if any fights are coming on, or check the boxing schedule on their websites. I can't wait for the calzaghe/hopkins fight next month. There have been some excellent fights in the last month, esp. vazquez/marquez, and that was a non ppv showtime fight.

OK, so I called in to DirecTV to see what kind of deal I could get on the HR21 receiver.
The first guy I spoke to played hardball and didn't want to budge off the price of $199 plus $19.99 for shipping.
I called right back and got another guy who also didn't want to budge, but was at least nicer than the first guy.
They swore up and down that they don't give out that receiver for any less than that, which I know is BS.
I asked to be transfered to the Retention Department and I was still offered the receiver at the same price, but this time with a $10 credit for 12 months (I'm already getting a $10 monthly credit) and the HD Extra Pack (which runs at $4.99/month) free for another 3 months (I had already been offered it for free for the past 3 months).
So all in all, I was able to get an OK deal for the receiver.
Not a great deal, but not bad considering I've only been a DirecTV customer for 6 months.

I just had my HD reciever installed. Interesting story - I was told the HD rec. would be the latest model the HR21. I was told the regular retail is $299 but I could get it for $99. with 12 months free hd service. After 4 no shows - no calls from the installation dept. it was finally installed. I was told to expect a credit on my bill of $10. per month for one year twice because of the inconvience of the no shows. When this credit did not appear on my bill I was told it would appear on the next billing cycle. It didn't - so I called again and the rep told me he could no find any such thing in the notes. Okay. when they came finally to install the receiver I asked if this was the latest model as I was told the HR21. The installer told me they do not have these in the warehouse but I was receiving the HR20 and a refurbished model at that. I called customer service and I was told there is no guarantee on the make and model you will receive. Furthermore, the majority of receivers that are installed are refurbished. I questioned why would I pay full price for a refurbished unit and I was told these are not purchased units but all units that you pay for are leased units and are to be returned after use. Be careful - what you think you are getting probably isn't what you agreed to or paid for.

Yeah I was able to get the same deal and starz free for 3 months. Although I ended up going to costco to get since it's cheaper and I don't have to wait for it in the mail.

Not bad I guess considering I got a free hr20 this past july.

Retention department is basically a Tier 2 customer service rep. They are there to try and stop folks from cancelling service. They have more latitude on what and how much to offer each customer. The best deals are always from retention.

I called yesterday to find out about an HD receiver. I have been with them for 10 years and have 3 regular receivers and a TIVO receiver. They offered me the HD receiver $99 after I told them I was considering moving to Time Warner where the HD receiver is free.

This is still not good enough for me - I refuse to pay for the freaking HD receiver - anybody had any luck getting one free or am I just dreaming?

I called a few months ago and was able to get the following:

- Free HD DVR
- $10 off for 12 months
- HD package free for 12 months

So it is possible to get the HD receivers or DVR for free, but you may have to give up some premium channels or extra receivers to get the HD.

Not sure if this was already mentioned but if you have been a member for quite some time, mentioning this fact only helps the cause. They were trying to charge me $100 for moving twice within a 6 month period (which was only by a week or so), and when I mentioned the possibility of canceling, the supervisor started by saying that he saw I was a member for over 10 years etc etc, and this seemed to help quite a bit. I wish I had included that info to the first rep i talked to, might have prevented an extra phone call.

Just got off the phone with direct tv. We were only one year into our contract so we had a full year left but here is the deal we got :

1 Free HD DVR (the new one with VOD)
2 HD DVR for $99 (the new one with VOD)
3 HD service free for a year
4 Starz, Showtime, Cinemax, HBO free for 6 months
5 Free install
6 $10 off per month for a year

We called and the first person we talked to did not want to give us anything. Got switched to a second person who would not give us anything. Finally got a supervisor the third time around and got the above offer. I thought $99 for two HD DVR's was pretty sweet along with all the other discounts I am a happy camper.

Good luck to everyone getting this deal.

Warning! When any current customers upgrade to HD service, they are automatically signed into a two year agreement. This two year agreement runs from the date of the upgrade. Also new customers that get the HD service are subject to this 2 year agreement with out knowledge and consent to it.

That is a really good deal, I need to call them and try again. I have less than a year left on my current contract (like 7 months). About getting the new DVR with VOD, there is no such thing. Both the HR20 and HR21 get VOD, all it is is a firmware upgrade to allow it. The HR20 is the better of the 2 recievers though, the HR21 is more of a budget model without antenna, and I forget the other diffences.

As rbreding mentioned, this is not new. Most CSR's do mention the 2 year commitment when you get HD services with them. Everytime I have upgraded one of my many receivers I get the whole spiel about restarting my commitment with them. Never been an issue to me.

Each of my first two calls to a DirecTV CMR only got me the "existing customer special": Free upgrade to HD dish w/ free installation, but $199 for a HD DVR. And no specials/credits on programming Some special. Guess I'll have to escalate it to retention and hope they don't call my bluff, 'cause I'd like to keep my account with them.

Both the HR20 and HR21 get VOD, all it is is a firmware upgrade to allow it. The HR20 is the better of the 2 recievers though, the HR21 is more of a budget model without antenna, and I forget the other diffences.

Sounds like a good deal.
What channel package did you get?

What is the difference between HR20 and 21? Except for the color of course.

HR21 runs faster and cooler, but won't accept an OTA antenna.

I know this is a bit off topic, but I finally canceled my account with DTV. What a breath of fresh air! They roped me into a 2 year contract almost exactly 2 years ago today without even telling me and they would not budge. I had my account on hold for over a year now and I was finally able to cancel today. Awesome!

So for those of you that are wondering - as far as I can tell suspending your account does not extend your agreement.

Chris

So, did you call three times or did this happen on 1 call itself? Did you need to threaten to cancel? I have called retention 3 times and haven't gotten a better deal than 1 HD DVR for 99 and $10 off for 12 months.

Yes it was all in one phone call. (I was talking to customer service, I never spoke to the retention department) The whole process took over an hour. Yes you absolutely need to threaten to cancel. Tell them that Comcast, Verizon, and Dish network are offering better services for less money. Look at my post and tell them that is what you want. Don't settle for anything less. Ask for supervisors, make several calls, whatever you need to do. Keep plugging away until you get what you want.

Wow, in less then five minutes I just got $10/mo off for a year! I've been with them for 10yrs but haven't bothered them all year so it was time to beg again. It goes something like this.
I called 1-800-494-4388 and suffered through some of the stupid voice prompts.
Then I just said "cancel" (old trick) but told the pleasant CSR guy I was just trying to downgrade my HD + package to save money and flustered by the voice menu. He immedieatly offered 5$/mo off but I politely complained about paying for another HD extra $4.99 fee a few months back. Then he doubled down with $10/mo off for a year. I didn't want to push my luck but I was interested in Cinemax and he threw in 3 months free also on top of the instant discount. I thanked him and told him I'd spread the good word about Directv.

Just got off the phone with DTV.
on the menu i said 'cancel'
spoke with a nice lady for 10 minutes.
told her that ATT came to my house and offered me a great deal with their UVERSE service.
She knew what I was talking about although I was bluffing regarding the deal I got. and 3 minutes later gave me all that:
free HD for 6 months
$10 off/6 month
1 month for free
free hbo/showtime/encore for 6 months

I hope that helps guys...
GOOD LUCK!
Btw, i called at 11:30 Pacific time, so maybe the late hour had a plus ;@)

I've been with Directv since 96 and would like to upgrade to HD (I have Verizon Fios for
internet, so that's an option as well). The problem is that I really like the Sunday Ticket.
If they call my bluff and I cancel, would they let me sign up as a "new customer" in, say,
August, and get all of the free stuff that way?

I want to have this figured out before I call.

Thanks in advance.

If you actually do cancel and you wait till August to sign up again then yes you will be able to sign up as a new customer and get all the perks that new customers get. It is something like you could't have an account within the past 60 or 90 days I can't remember which.

Actually, no he/she wouldn't be a "new" customer. The accounts are tied to SS#'s, would have to sign up with significant other's # to be able to take advantage of offers.

Didn't have such great luck on this this weekend...

I made about 5 calls over the weekend with different approaches and none would give me better than $10 credit/12 months, free HD receiver, free HD installation, but I would pay the standard $10 for HD - essentially free HD but full price on everything else. I'm also having them move me (that's free anyway). They all refused to admit that they could do better than that. I knew what they gave me was pretty standard. My first year w/ them just ended and I was reluctant to pull the trigger as all my promotions ended and I was going up to regular price. I also downgraded from Choice Extra to Choice so I could afford it. A couple of the CSRs had a "this is the best we'll do for you, take it or leave it" attitude, and said that they're not allowed to give a customer more than $10/12 months (one "manager" wasn't allowed to do better than $10/6 months) even telling me to go down to the family package and skip HD if I really want to save money. They also told me that I've only been a cust for 1 year so I shouldn't get any discounts... I said I've only been out of college 1 year and money is kinda tight - they didn't budge on that either. I originally tried bluffing that cable would give me HD and the channels I want for $35/mo and they tried to compare the # of channels. That would be a great argument if I had reason to watch more than 10 of the channels I have now. If only there was a comparable service here - or at least one that wasn't run by liars. Anybody else somehow magically get signed up for paperless billing at some point and have your CC charged before your promo discounts were applied? What about suddenly getting charged $5 or so for their newsletter?

Good luck to anybody on getting better than I did. I do hope that HDPC-20 comes out soon....

O/T a bit, but wasnt sure if there was a better place for this question:

I have DirectTV, had them for almost a year now, cant really remember. Anyways... Since I have gone to the dish, I have had nothing but problems with my receiving my local channels thru the dish. All the other channels are clear as day. I have called them numerous times, had them come out a bunch of times as well.

The issue is where the dish is mounted, there is a giant tree in the way. If its a calm day, I dont have a problem, same in the winter (no leaves on the tree). But the rest of the year I am constantly losing my signal. My wife has had it, so needless to say I need to do something about it.

I have had them out a couple of times, and we looked at moving the dish. But there isnt any better options. I could care less about the local news, but I need my basic CBS, ABC, NBC, etc... Is there any way to get those channels thru the dish but not thru the local channel? The only other option is to add basic cable & keep the dish. Or cancel the dish period.

Mods - If this belongs somewhere else, please move it. Just figured this might be the best spot for it.

Thanks

Well you need line of sight to the satellites, so if there is a tree in the way, you need to cut it or move the dish. The alternative that you want is that some of the DTV boxes allow you hook up a standard rooftop antenna so that for your locals, you can watch them via the antenna rather than from satellite. Not sure if that's only for the HD boxes though or all of them.

I don't quite understand--that tree gives you problems only with local channels? I would think that it would give you problems with other channels as well if it's causing issues w/ your locals, but what do I know--I'm no satellite dish expert. Are your local channels coming in directly via the dish, or do you have some other antenna attached to it? Like I said, I'm confused as to how your dish apparently has no problems picking up any of the non-local channels, yet has problems locking onto local channels when the tree comes into play.

In any case--to answer your question, D* does carry the national East/West Coast feeds of ABC/CBS/NBC/FOX but you can only get them if you can prove you live in an area where it is not possible to receive the network feeds via OTA (e.g., rabbit ear or outdoor antenna)--say, you live way too far from the transmission towers...and even then, you have to request a waiver from your local network station.

I was aware of the line of site, went over that with one of the installers. I had them out a couple of times. Pretty much where the dish is now, is the best I am going to get. As to the tree, well I cant have it cut down :(

I did find something on the DirectTV site that I think is what I am looking for. They have something called Distant Broadcast Network Feeds. Its to get the ABC, CBS, etc.. for those that cant get their local channels.

Now if I can convince them to allow me to have it. If not... well once contract is up I will go back to cable then if I must. Might as well see what they offer me to stay with them as well. But if I cant get the local channels, wont matter what they offer.

I'm in the process of dealing with this right now. For me, it was only the HD local channels that were giving me problems. I've taken probably 15-20 phone calls, and had probably 5 or 6 people come out to my house. First, they tried some BS with changing something on my box, that didn't work. Next, they moved my satelite to a different spot. That fixed all my HD local channels, they all come in great now, BUT, now ESPN, TNT, ESPN2 HD all have the same problem. Another guy came out yesterday and said he was going to research the problem, and get back to me today. Hopefully, today I'll get some good news, but I'm not holding my breath.

there is also a way to run multiple dishes, where you pick up one satellite on one dish, then other satellites on another, and multiplex them all together, but dtv wont set that up for you, you'd have to go with a private installer and pay for it yourself.

Even though I keep losing the local channels, because they are available in my market, they cant offer the Distant Broadcast Network feed.

They are going to send one of their Senior Lead Techs out for one last look. If they cant do anything then I am going to cancel. If they can get the channels to come in, then I will see about getting in on one of their 2 year deals with the free HD-DVR & what not.

To get the locals through a national feed, you call DTV and request a waiver. DTV sends in a waiver on your behalf to your local affiliates. It is up to the discretion of your local broadcasters. A few years ago, I applied for all the major networks and only my local CBS affiliate approved the waiver. At the time, I was too far away to pick up the channels with an antenna. Also, if I remember correctly, it took 2-3 months before I was approved for the CBS national feed.

As someone else stated, you could check the specs of your DTV box and see if you can add an antenna yourself. If you're close enough (which I wasn't) you would be able to pick up your local channels in HD via antenna. If you're not watching on an HD TV, you'll have to decide if the picture is good enough via antenna for your liking. Rooftop antennas are always the best. Indoor antennas work well if you're not too far from the signal.

How long have you been with directv?

About 7 months ago, I activate the HD-20R receiver, ordered HD channels. The rep told me that I have to to have a 5 LNB dish because my current 3 LNB dish can't receive HD channels, so I said sure hook me up. Next day, I changed my mind and called in to cancel the order, the rep. did just that. Couple months later, I decided to cancel my Directv service because I don't need it anymore. The rep. told me that I have to pay the rest of the HD service because I'm on a 1 year contract. I told her that I never got HD channels and the dish. She said because I activated the HD-20R receiver, it's an HD receiver and I have to pay for the service. After going through 3 different managers, they refused to help me. One of the guy I spoke to, he insists that I can receive HD channels with the 3LNB dish. So in other words, I'm stealing HD channels according to him. I got pissed off and straight up told the rep. to give this message to the management team, tell them to kiss my a.s.s., literally.

Anyway, so I cancel my service and paid $240 ETF, plus the remaining HD service. And to rub salt to the wound, they want their HD receiver back because they claimed that it's a less and not a purchase although I paid $107 at Best Buy. A month later, they keep calling me and beg me to come back. I told them my message to the management team is still the same when I cancel my order, kiss my a.s.s.! F#@$ directv.

I have the same issue with trees and here is how they explained it to me. The local channels are on a lower orbit sat while the remaining channels are on two higher altitude sats. So while the tree interferes with the local sat, the other two are fine since they are higher. Two local channels have switched to HD and are now also carried on a different sat, so I now get those (only the HD version of those channels however, the non-HD versions are still on the lower alt sat). Once the rest of them reach an agreement, I suppose I will get the rest of the locals.

But yes just like thehip said, I believe they told me the same thing last time they were out.

All the non local channels (mtv, vh1, usa, tnt, etc..) all come in perfect. Dont think I ever had so much as anything messed up. But the locals are always going in & out. I have DVR and you can tell when the signal got lost. You will watch your show jump anywhere from 10 secs to a good 10-15 minutes. Sometimes I will get maybe 2 mins of an hr show when its really bad.

We'll see what the senior tech says when they send him out.

No, if both inputs are for the satellite dish (I'm pretty sure they are); the only way is if your DVR is one of those HD (i.e., high-def) models that also have a coax OTA input. Some HD DVR models come w/ a built-in OTA (i.e., local over-the-air programming) tuner, some don't--the ones that do have the additional coax input for the OTA antenna (meaning there should be three coax inputs on the back of the DVR). If your DVR doesn't have a built-in (HD) tuner for OTA, then see if your TV does--if so, then you can connect your antenna to it...but note that you won't be able to record any OTA HD programming on your DVR. OTOH--the bright side is that you won't need to turn on your DVR in order to watch local HD programming if you have your antenna connected to your TV...LOL!

Sorry Tonester not sure how I missed your post.

NP, and that makes sense about the satellite angle. I take it that tree is in such a location that there's no other spot where you can have the dish relocated? Dang that sux...but good luck!

I feel your pain man. I got fed up with them as well. Too many billing issues, too many times I have my HD channels "drop" from being active on my account all of the sudden and have to spend another 10-15 mins to get them back. Sadly I am still under another 18 months left. I wanted to suspend the contract and see if it will tick away still while being suspended but I am not sure and don't want to extend the pain too long.

Can't wait for IPtv and / or hopefully alacarte channels, because honestly besides the off air HD channels, CNBC ( god I love that channel), TNT, CNN, Spike and from time to time Animal planet I don't really watch anything else. I feel ripped off every time I pay that huge bill for stuff I don't even want. Sigh but going on a tangent here and so I will stop

No love on my end. Even though I've tried many times today, the deal comes back the same:

HR21 for $99
$10 credit for 12 months

The sad bit is: if I was to start a new service with Qwest (who bundles DirecTV), I would actually save $30 a month!

What is the difference between the Directv Hr21 and Hr21 pro? Is the Pro what people are talking about ? We have the shiny black hr21 and have had nothing but problems with it. It stalls up all of the time and sometimes when you fast forward the audio doesn't catch up with the picture.

Nobody here is talking about the Pro. The Pro version is rack mountable and has more drive space. The internal electronics and software are identical, it's just used in "high end" installs.

I just a HD TV, so called retention and recited the comcast deal to them. they gave me
HR20 free (had to pay $19 shipping)
free installation (I need the new dish)
free HD programming for 6 months.

not too bad. i really had to hem and haw to get the programming for 6 months.

i'll take it!

What you really need to do is submit a claim on the Better Business Bureau. I had a problem with them in the past and I went through bbb.org and WAHBAM they credited me my ETF in FULL.. Very important to make note of everyone you talk to and Badge #'s if they will give them to you. Be very discriptive..

Well, I have a second HDTV on the way for my bedroom so I really needed another HD receiver. However, I've been a customer for less than 2 years, I am under contract for several more months, plus I have already paid for the current MLB Extra Innings package which is non-refundable, so in reality DTV had me over a barrel. I called a few weeks ago and they offered me an HD-DVR for $199 - $100 credit plus $20 shipping fee, but they wouldn't throw anything else in even when I pressed them.

Called again today and was offered the HD-DVR for $199 - $75 credit plus $20 fee (even worse). I again asked nicely about what else she could do for me and this time the CSR ended up giving me a $10 credit per month for 6 months, and free Starz & Showtime for three months. Not that great compared to what some people have gotten, but considering the fact that I was kind of stuck with DTV for now and really wanted to get the HD-DVR ASAP, it's not horrible.

OP posting back on this thread.

I called yesterday to really cancel it. I'm planning on building a house and disposible income is no longer available.

After a $10 off for the next 12 months offer was declined, and after the offer to suspend my account for 6 months (so I don't have to pay and they don't lose a customer), they came back with $100 credit on my bill.

So I get 2 months free, and then I'll cancel.

well had one of the lead-techs out to the house today. He went ahead and moved the dish to a pole. So far so good. I will give it a week or 2. Hopefully wont loose my local channels any more. If all goes well, I will call and see what kind of offers they will give me to sign into a new contract.

No longer under contract with DTV since Feb. I want to lower my current channel package. If I do that, that won't lock me into another year, right?

Shouldn't lock you at all, unless you're getting equipment, or some promotional pricing.

anyone still have there hr10-250? they are now offering a free swap with no commitment. If you haven't swapped out your HR10 receiver, there may never be a better time.

You can take advantage if you qualify as an owner of an MPEG2-only HD receiver, if that receiver is still active, and you have not swapped out those receivers for MPEG4-capable ones.

You can get an HR20 or HR21 receiver ... FREE. NO COMMITMENT. The receivers will be leased (even if you own the receiver now). You will receive replacement HD receiver and a KaKu dish.

Just call 1-888-763-7772 and mention "FREE HD SWAP" to the agent.

The only concern I have about going for this deal is the part about possibly having to pay the lease fee since the unit will be leased--I'm already paying the monthly lease fee on a HR20 receiver while my HR10-250 is owned (and is also the primary receiver on my account, so I don't have to pay the monthly receiver fee for it). If I do decide to go for this deal...does that mean I will have to pay the monthly lease fee for each of the two receivers, or just for one of them (D* doesn't charge you a receiver fee on the first receiver on your account)? I dunno if it's worth paying an extra monthly receiver fee ($4.99) just so I can watch programming on another HR20--yes I know it can receive more HD channels than the HR10-250 but whatever HD channels I need to watch, I can just choose to do so on my other HR20 receiver. Now if I already have 3 or more receivers, then my concern is moot...but since I have only two (and am not looking to add a third), my concern is valid.

Note--I'm not thread-crapping the deal, just trying to find out if I will be charged a(nother) lease fee if I have only two receivers on my account and I decide to swap out one of the two receivers (non-leased HR10) for a leased one (HR20/21) under this deal.

Your first receiver is always without charge, that is included in the monthly. Each additional receiver is what you pay either the mirror or lease fee as they call it now.

I've had so many problems with Directv - it's kind of sad. I don't know where they get their #1 customer satisfaction claim from, or who they "poll" but their billing department is a total nightmare. Their customer service dept. ( while sometimes you can geta knowledgable person - rarely but sometimes ) is filled with people who 90% of the time couldn't really care less, another 95% of the time they have no idea what they are doing.

I've had streaks of me calling 1 day, and them messing up my account, followed by another call which fixes the problemof the first call, but creates a brand new problem.

So very frustrating, however I will not eat an ETF fee .. not yet.

btw anyone know if they prorate ETFs ? and if so by how much ? I'm afraid to call and ask because I just got everything working almost as it's supposed to and they will probably mess it up simply by querrying my account :)

Rentetion Rep offered $99 + $20 S/H with 6 Months Free HD. Told them they had to do better than that or im going to comcast or dish (In a nice way - but still - Paying for the lease box was out of the question for me)

I am looking to upgrade my Directv service.

Current setup:
Total Choice Plus Programming
DVR Service
HBO
1 DVR R10 receiver
3 Standard D10 receivers
Bill is currently around $90/month

I just went online and they are offering $100 off an HD DVR, so it would cost me $99 up front.
Standard DVR $99 upfront
Standard Receivers $69 upfront for each unit.

Looking to upgrade to the Plus HD DVR package for $72.99/month plus lease fees.

Should I try to get all 4 receivers upgraded even though just really need the new HD DVR.

We have been with Directv for several years. Is there a reasonable chance I could get the fees for all 4 new receivers to be waved (Makes no sense you have to pay upfront and pay a monthly "lease fee") get additional money off my bill per month, and get free HBO or some movie channels?

Should I just call and ask for retention dept right away?
Thanks for your advice!

Then they add a 4.99 lease fee to each box.

You will certainly get a better deal by going thru retentions. However, I strongly doubt that they'll give you 4 receivers free. I haven't seen this ever happen for anyone (at least not 4 HD receivers for free). Also, don't be surprised if you do end up having to pay upfront for 2-3 of these receivers given that you dont fall within the prototypical "high end" that DirecTV appears to be aiming their services to (as evidenced by them stating so in their quarterly report).

If you read thru that thread, you will notice that the consensus is that it's not really 'exciting' news given that 24 of the new 30 HD channels will be RSNs, and the offerings of 1080p will more than likely be VOD/PPV stuff (In other words, nothing that will be available to standard HD customers). Don't get me wrong, I've been with DirecTV for 11 years now, but I'm just giving you a synopsis of the overall consensus in regard to the 'news' in that post.

I was only looking for One HD DVR, 1 standard DVR, and 2 standard receivers.
No need for 4 HD receivers. I only have 1 TV that is HD right now.

I suggest you call DirecTV and connect with retentions. I am pretty sure they will offer you a good deal. You might want to get 2 HD receivers, since HD on Standard sets looks stunning. That way if/when you do upgrade another TV to HD, you'll already have the receiver for it.

Unless you have the protection plan, don't expect DirecTV to make a 'free' service call.

I wouldnt necessarily say "complain" but rather go thru retentions and have a good case as to what you have and what you'd like to have, and offer them the current deals you CAN get thru Dish local to where you live. Sort of like price matching. It's a very YMMV thing, and many times success/failure has to do with how nice/courteous you are with the CSR that takes your call.

Well I just called Directv and the rep only offer to take $100 off the HD DVR price to make it $99 plus a 19.95 handling fee.

HD Receiver would be $99 and standard receivers would be $69
No program credits were offered either.
2 year commitment would be required.

So no dice! Will have to try back again.
Is there a specific phone number I should try using?

Ok just tried calling again, used the 800-824-9081 number.
Spoke with a female rep.
Still only wanted to over me the $100 off the HD DVR and nothing else.
I told her I had an off for 4 HD receivers (2 of them DVRs) from Dishnetwork for $50 and still didn't get anywhere.

How many times do I have to call to get a decent deal?

How about a free service call? Our roof mounted dish really glitches when its windy. I got one free due to a windstorm and my dish is high up a pole. It was within a few months of install so YMMV. Barely make it over the oak trees so reception probably even better in the winter when leaves fall. But hopefully with the new satellites I'll get a better shot.
DIRECTV rolled out MPEG4 versions of the following MPEG2 channels on the new 99(c) satellite http://www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?t=134436
I did notice an audio pop/crackling went away with the new mpeg4 version of Dolby 5.1. Both my HDTVs had audio problems on the lower HD Mpeg2 channels.

I call shenanigans on the additional $10 off credit for the extra 4 months .... that or I've been lied to by 2 different high level supervisors in retentions. ( which I guess is not too far off in the case of DirecTV being extremely bad at customer service ).

From those 2 different supervisors I've been repeatedly told that you cannot get a credit for more than 12 months. You can get 12 months, at the end of which you can hussle for another credit, but you can't have a revolving credit off for longer than 12 months.

So either you have no idea about credits, or the retention supervisors are lying morons ( which I would accept without being too surprised ).

If you pass credit check? Is that for new customers or also for customers re-upping?

The account is still in my mom's name, we just never changed it when I took it over and her credit is not that good. But, we've been a customer for over a decade now and I've been on the auto pay for about a year now, so no late payments or anything like that.

Do we need to look at changing the name on the account or will the credit check really matter that much for a long standing customer?

Thanks!

So when I call up and tell them at the prompts to "cancel service" I don't get the retention department? Should I specifically ask to speak with someone in retention?

I already have a quote from Dish but the rep didnt seem to care much. Although right before ending the call, she told me to call back before making the switch. Hello that's what I was doing! Might have time this afternoon to try this again.....

I just switched to FiOS yesterday (pretty cool so far). On the same day, I called and cancelled with DirecTV. I really had no problem with them at all for the 4 years I was with them, but FiOS, at the time, offered more, was cheaper and offered better functionality.

So, the guy asks me what specifically did I like about FiOS to switch? I told him price and the VOD. He offered me the HD-DVR for free, HD service for 6 months for free, and a movie package. I told him I already had switched, and we parted on good terms. Today, DirecTV calls me to offer, in addition, $10 off a month for the next year and a free NFL Sunday Ticket! Amazing.

So, those of you that are trying, stay at it. If you are in NYC as I am, I think you will have greater luck since FiOS is new to that market. Sorry to be so wordy, but I wanted to share my experience and offer so incentive to those still trying. :D

Well my year is up, and HBO just dropped off yesterday. Anyone know of any current promotions from retentions? If they give me a good deal I'll stay, otherwise I'm moving to fios for tv. Right now I'm on Choice Xtra and no HD. I'm looking for HD now for one room, dvr not really needed. Are they still doing the minimum? For example just giving a HD Receiver and 10/month credit, or are HD channels thrown in for free or what? Just wondering what I should look for this time since I haven't kept up for about 6 months.

I'm a big DTV fan and have mentioned my deals already but here's the latest news about new box and free previews. It's a crapshoot if you can get the new HR22, DTV can't guarantee what the guy will bring.
HR22 is pretty much the same thing as an HR21 except that it records 100 hours of HD instead of 50 hours of HD. This is accomplished by putting a 500GB HDD into the system instead of the normal 320GB HDD that you would find in the HR20/HR21. http://www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?t=136423

And to fill up that bigger drive, free preview weekends and far out FarmAid.:
HBO & Cinemax 9-5 - 9-8

Starz 9-11 - 9-14

Sports Pack 9-19 - 9-21

At first he was going to charge me for the 2nd receiver - then decided that he could credit our account for the $99.00 - and must have credited the shipping too because the credit was for $126.12 - didn't ask for the 3rd receiver to be HD - didn't really need hd for spare bedroom. I was satisfied with hd and Sunday Ticket so guess that's what counts and he told me upfront without even asking that we can change the package after 4 months.

I just switched from Dish to Direct. Was tired of not having locals in HD and still paying for it. Plus the lack of quality HD channels got me to finally pull the trigger. I got the HD DVR, a DVR and 2 basic recievers for $99 start up. They wanted $198 but I finally got them to give me both for just $99. I got the Plus HD DVR package. $18 a month off for a year, referral from my sister for $10 off for 5 months, free showtime for 6 months, nascar hotpass free, $20 off one time for paperless billing. Not too bad all in all. My 1st bill will be $71, my 2nd will have the $20 paperless credit as well as the 1st of 5 $10 off. So my 2nd bill will be $41. My 3rd-6th bill will be $61. My 7th - 13th will be back to $71. Then it is suppose to go to the full price of $89 but they said to call and they will have some sort of discount avilable for me then. Also I called yesterday because my sister got a call for all the movie channels for $5 a month for 3 months. I asked for that and he said he would give me showtime for 3 months free. But I already have it free for 6 months, he said oh yeah I see that now. I'll just give you all the others for free for 3 months. Plus I asked him why the $18 discount was not showing and he said I did not validate it yet. So he pushed that through and said he would also credit me the $18 this 1st month too. So it will be 13 months of the $18 off. Glad I made the switch myself. Love my Direct Tv so far.:)

Does anyone know how long your service with DirecTV has to be disconnected to be considered a "new customer"? I'm going to be away for 1 month & thought I might disconnect during my trip & try to re-set up to get the new customer benefits. Also, the service is currently in my husbands name, I could switch it into my name. Just curious if anyone has info they can share on this situation.

I believe the a/c goes by phone number - as far as any promotions I think it just depends on the csr that you talk to - I think there may be a standby if you are away for a month - I'd call - say cancel service to get to retention and go from there. You don't necessarily have to be a new customer to get the new deals.

Its by address and phone number. If the phone number, and the name doesn't change, you are never a new customer no matter how long you go without the service. They've cracked down on existing customers trying to get new customer deals in the last 2 years.

If you've had it for that long they should upgrade your equipment at no charge - from reading the forum it seems like it depends on who you talk to - just say cancel service when they ask what you are calling for and they will be more than happy to talk to you. You might be surprised what they'll give you to keep you as a customer.

I have had standard DirecTV for over a year and a half and my contract expires in December. I finally purchased an HD TV and so I tried to upgrade. Apparently the HD satellite signals are in a different location than the standard ones and my home does not have any good location to put the new dish.

As such I am cancelling and switching to cable. I have called several times to ask that my early termination fee be waived due to the inability to get HD but they keep saying that my contract was based on the standard service and not HD, which is true. I counter by saying that the sales person told me that the new dish would simply replace the existing dish and relying on that information, I went out and spent a lot of money on a new HD TV. Anyway, the early termination fee is only $37 so it's not that big a deal but if anyone knows of another way that I can get out of my contract I would really appreciate it.

When I do cancel, my service will stop at midnight that day. After that, will I still be able to watch recorded programs on my DVR or is that dependent on active service? They'll mail me boxes to send the receiver box back to them but that allows me at least some time to watch or transfer some programs if it does continue to work. Anyone know?

Since you're not a long time customer I guess $37 ETF isn't too hard to take. The worse part is the saleman didn't suggest a site survey. I had to have one since I'm just barely above the treeline in the south. They had to stretch the line out over a hundred feet and up a pole to get me the new mpeg4 birds. Luckily they are old oaks and grow slow.

About your recorded shows, yes you definately can watch them or even feed them to a VCR. I have an old HD box in the bedroom I use sometimes, you don't need to have it activated at all. It will search but just hit the play menu to go to the play list. Enjoy your new HDTV, there is no going back. Hope your cable feed is clean, my mom's comcast in a ten year old building is snowy and even missing some programming.

We just started our Directv service about 4 months ago with a standard receiver (no hdtv at the time). We recently got a HDTV and want to go the hd route. Is it better to go out and get the HD receiver so that we don't have to extend our contract and install just the box ourselves or are there other things that need to be done by a technician to the dish outside? I'd like to get on the bandwagon to get free stuff too, but was only offered 1 year of HD programming free.

My suggestion, don't wait for them to offer you something. They are not looking to give away free stuff everytime they talk to a customer. You need to ask for exactly what you want. I like to have a brief script prepared as to how you plan to justify the free things I am asking for.

Hi everyone. I was just wondering how many times a year can you call DirecTV to receive free offers from them to stay. I called about 6 months ago and received:

6 months free of HBO, SHO, and MAX
3 months free of STARZ, and
$10 credit for 12 months.

My movie channels are now all gone.I would like to call back again and see if I can do the whole script of wanting to switch providers, but I'm afraid they'll see that I already called 6 months ago and was offered the above services. I just basically want to receive the movie channels.

Should I call again or should I wait until the $10 credit for 12 months is over and then call?
Also, is the AAA discount for new customers only?

Any help you all can give me will be much appreciated. Thank you!

Thank you!

Never hurts to call and try.

OK - Here's what I got:

1 HD - DVR free
1 HD Rec'r free
Installation on both
HD service 1 yr free
HD service pk (5 extra channels) 1 yr free
HBO, Starz, Cinimax & Showtime 3 months free
$10 / month bill credit for 12 months

Had to pay $19.95 (think it was install charge) & had to commit for 2 yrs.

I'm pleased.
what did you have before this? Did you just say you wanted all of that stuff or you were going to switch?

what you said to them when you call?

Anything. For example Once I called to say that I wasn't getting all football games in HD. Got $20/mo x 6 mo credit. Another time I called to ask why the hd dvr receiver I received was refurbished instead of new. I got $20/mo x 6 mo credit and a $10/mo x 12 mo credit. Then, of course, the first time I called and got the $75 * 4 mo with free sunday ticket deal.

After seeing a few other comments in this thread about DTV not delivering what they promised, I emailed them asking for email verification of what the retention rep had offered me. I got a vague reply stating they'd honor his offer. When I again responded with the specifics of the order, I got another vague reply (but they cut off the part of my email which listed the offer.) So again, I restated the "offer" and asked for verification. I got a response stating that was NOT what the rep had offer and therefore DTV would not honor it. Part of that offer included waiving the HD receiver fee and the $10 HD reception fee for a year, plus a $10 monthly discount.

I basically replied that if the offer I was promised was not honored, to forget my upgrade and two year additional commitment.

Long post, short moral: whatever they promise you, get it in writing via email. It'll be harder to prove what you were promised three or six months up the road, when they cut off the freebies you were promised and start charging for it.

I can see the discounts online in my Account Activity section. If you go to 'Activity since last bill' I can see the discounts there.

For example, the $20/mo for 6 mo credit is listed as '6 Mos Bas Dis ($20.00)'.
The $10/mo credit for 12 mo is listed as 'HD Access Credit ($9.99)'

I recently made the switch to ATT Uverse. It is great. They answer on the first ring. They give you any incentive you ask for. American customer service agents. Pricing with DSL is same price as I was paying for Directv alone. And I can't tell u how many problems I've had over the years with my Directv service and billing and equipment problems. So, if you don't get the NFL package consider making the switch. They even have an interactive tv thingy that tells u your local weather, traffic, sports scores for any teams or leagues u want, as well as, On Demand.

Because they are leased receivers and they think they can send you anything they feel like. There was a 'reconditioned' sticker on the back.

I'm moving and got this deal...but I'm thinking that it may be better for my husband to sign up as a new customer...what do you guys think?

Free HD DVR and free Installation/delivery
$10 off/month for 12 months
3 months free showtime and Starz
(We didn't get the $75 NFL package because we have a new baby and my husband won't be home to watch most of the games anyways on Sunday)

Anyhow, I was thinking about calling back to threaten to cancel so I can get the HD fee waived for a year or another HD receiver even though I don't need one. What do you guys think? Or is it even a better deal to sign up as a new customer since you'll get $18/month off???

Thanks in advance for the help!

Thought I would share my experience.

I dropped DirectTV for DISHHD after DirectTV demanded $10 more a month for HD (but would waive this for a year), would only give me one HD box for free (I had to pay for the other) and wanted a 24-month commitment.

One month later, they called me to offer to waive all the costs of going to HD if I came back.

Well, needless to say, it was too late.

I have a SD DirectvPlus DVR (R15). I can't play recorded shows if the service is not working. For example, I suspended the account for a couple of months and I couldn't play the recorded shows until the service came back up.

I'm in a bind. OK, not a bind. More of a quandary. FIOS is offering sweet deals to me daily for TV service (I'm a FIOS internet user). But I can't do without Sunday Ticket (even though my DVR failed to record my team last Sunday, but that's another story). I can't really call and threaten to cancel since I've already paid for Sunday Ticket and, well, I want it.

Has anybody used a different service and also kept Directv just for the Sunday Ticket?
I have enough cabling in the wall that I could do this and watch either on all TVs. I was thinking I could drop to the $29 package if I had to for 4 months, and suspend Directv after every football season and re-start it before.

Anybody done this or have a better idea?

To partially answer your question, yes, some people are so into the Sunday Ticket that they buy DirecTV, trash the dish and then get the Sunday Ticket just so they can watch the games online.

Speaking of which, you could get a NFL.com Game Pass (http://www.nfl.com/gamepass) as an alternative.

Somewhere in this thread I'd cautioned folks to request a written confirmation of what they are promised after DTV backed out on its retention rep's promises to me.

Following a bit of back and forth correspondence with them, I was basically told I'd not receive what I was promised--that it had never been offered to me. So I promptly told DTV they could take their offer and stick it where the dish doesn't shine, and to cancel my upgrade.

A few days later, I got email from customer service, requesting that I call. (To a "direct number" with a PIN they provided to expedite my call.) Amazingly, they were able to provide the offer after all. Can't promise others will get the same, but it's worth a shot.

What I got:

Three free months of service (was issued as immediate credit to my account, factoring in the free HD service described below)

Six months of all premium movie channels free(was advised that the max they can provide for HBO and Cinemax are three months, that I have to call back in three months to have it extended free, and that a notation would be made in the file to that effect so I'd have no problems when I call

New dish (I own the old one and can keep for whatever purpose I may choose, if any)

New HD receiver (I have DVR, so I didn't need the HD DVR for $100 more)

Free installation of both above items.

One year free HD programming (fee waived), then $9.95 thereafter

Relocation of the receiver (which I own) to another room at no charge. Service to that receiver will be the standard $4.95 monthly fee. I needed another room added anyway, so this basically provided the same benefit as a waived service call for that outlet.

$10 credit to my bill for the next 12 months. This is in addition to the $10 monthly credit provided by AT&T.

Yeah, I had to extend my contract two years. But I figure with all the bells and whistles they offered (valued at well over $700), it was worth it.

For Equitment deals I think I take the cake on this one... So heres what I have gotten since first looking at thig thread:

Sunday Ticket (I pay for 4 Months)
Super Fan (FREE)
Premier $104.99 Package (FREE for 4 months)
HD Access (FREE 1 Year)
$20 Bill Credit For 6 Months

What I have to Work On Still:
HD EXTRA PACK FREE for 1 Year
DVR FEE FREE 1 Year

What I got Today:
The rep was willing to order me 2 FREE HD DVR Receiver's The HR-22 Brand new high capacity ones. They could not place the order since it would not let them specify whether the 22, 21, or 20 would be delivered. He suggested I go to Best Buy and buy them outright then callback anc they will credit the full amount on my account. I said okay and he gave me a call in pin to get quiker service on this. I bought the 2 HR-22's and called back. Rep was shocked to see that note and asked what I paid. I said $432.98 and the rep had noted that it would cost about 432 so we were in sink. He said that was more than any department could credit and had to submit a manual credit. He said it would take 24-48 hours to get credited but since it was on paper there would be no issue. So thats it I got 2 of thos receivers free!!!!!

Only two more things to get waived and Im set LOL...

i visited my parents this weekend (who have been Directv subscribers for years...) and they are still on their original plan, which is awful!!! They pay ~$74 a month for some crappy amount of channels + some west/east coast news feeds. I tried to tell them about the NFL Ticket package for $74.99, but they didn't want to hassle with changing the plan after 4 months.

Do you think I could still call in for them and get them a reduced monthly rate, more channels, and new receivers for free? They've had the same stuff since they signed up like 6 years ago.

I'm going to call retentions this week and work something out....wish me luck!

Directv is no longer partner with at&t..... how are they giving credits then. Heard that at&t might dump dish network soon and switch back to directv.

Everyone, when you post the deal you got, also post specifically how you got it. Who you spoke to, what you said, whether or not you're currently under contact, etc.

Bragging doesn't benefit the community - quality feedback on how to get the deal does benefit us all.

I am new customer!!

I called DirectTV... they would not even give me the second receiver for free and gave nothing more than what they advertised on their website..

Does all these deals only work for OLD customers who are done with their contract?

OR

Basically should I just get whatever I can and call back before the install and the time I actually go under contract and ask them to give me a better deal?

The thread is mainly for existing customers. New customers don't really have as much bargaining power. But I do see plenty of good packages out there in the newspapers, just keep looking.

IMO, you are better off getting a sign up deal (AAA, Best Buy if you're buying a TV) with a referral and then calling back after you are signed up than trying to get a deal from signing up. I signed up through Best Buy in August and I was able to get a decent deal ($10/off for a year, free HD for a year, free Superfan) just this week.

Theres no magic to this.

1) Go through IVR and say cancel service. Then repeat cancel.. This places you right in retention. Say to the person I would like to speak to retentions....

2) Once your sure you have retentions say ( My friend who has had service elss time than me got offered this and here I am with only this... Why the hell does he get that and ive been here longer and dont.... this is wrong... feel free to use emotion,,

3) be prepared to say what they have which is really what you want but dont get greety. Remember only certain people can get eveything you need to kno what you want and be reasonable too.

4) See what they offer and if not happy ask for a retentions supervisor..

IF YOU GO TO SOMEONE OUTSIDE OF RETENTIONS YOUR WASTING YOUR TIME AND I WILL NOT HAVE PITTY WHEN YOU COME BACK TO THE FORUM AND GO OFF ON HOW HORRIBLE DIRECTV TREADED YOU BY NOT OFFERING ANYTHING GOOD... YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!

Funny thing...I got everything I did and the next day DIrectv Calls me to ask how im doing LOL. They say for being loyal we want to offer you 3 months of showtime free..... Sorry already have it... Okay we want to offer you the $29.99 Nascar... Sorry not interested... Okay we will give you:

$50 One time Bill credit on you next bill

Funny thing is it could not be applied. Apparently my Directv Account has hit its monthly credit limit for number of credits that can be applied. They noted that I call in after my next bill cycle and have $50 more applied....

I guess to be in this position must be a good thing LOL

called yesterday, offered:
~ 1 HD-DVR @ 0.00
~ 1 free installation
~ pay 19.99 + tax for handling
~ resign 24-month contract (I had no contract for like 3+ years

already on my account which added 2 months ago:
~ 12 month $10 credit
~ 3 month showtime/starz/HBO
~ 12 month $5.99 DVR credit

notice on my account this AM that the $5.99 DVR credit disappeared after only gotten for ONE month :(

this is the 2nd time that some credit offered and disappeared after 1st month. Has this happen to anyone? was it any success getting all credits back?

I called like 3 times already, last one spoke to a supervisor in Retention & he also recorded the conversation saying I can drop the Free Movie Channels and get the $5.99 DVR credit back. WHAT THE HECK.

please let me know.... last time when it happened about 9 months ago, I had to call monthly to get one time credit.. then about 3 months later couldn't do it anymore so some department just decided to give me one-time credit all at once of the remaining amount.

also, how does some individual get FREE Handling on the DVR ??? I spoke to like 3 individuals after and all said wasn't noted on account so cannot credit. I'm curious, should I just cancel the installation/HD-DVR all together and possible try again later this week? would the 24-month contract already added to my account? I hope not!!! help please.

also, you think I could call back and say, would 9.99 HD Access credited for 12-month?? would that be asking way too much??? I had forgotten to read this thread before I made the call yesterday! ah...

My 12 month free HD is over next month. I am wanting to call DTV about cancelling to switch to Dish Turbo HD. I don t really care for premium channels, but just want to continue to have free HD or lower price per month with the Choice Package. Whats the strategy and what is a good deal to continue contract with DTV?

Currently Choice Plus w/ free HD, paying almost $65/month.

I am also due for a call to DTV but I have no idea what I should be asking for. This has not been updated for awhile. I don't need any hardware just $$ off. What should I be looking for?

I am thinking:

free HD again
free DVR again
other credits?

Thanks...any suggestions are welcome.

I'm about to bug them again for discounts. I plan to ask for another year of $10/mo off. I'd also like a replacement for my HR20 to the newer HR21 with bigger HDD. I might exagerate the minor problems like missed recordings. I also want to complain about the thier loud Directv commercials, freakin obnoxious. Good thing I can fast forward through them or I would of smashed my HDTV by now.

Earlier today I called customer service. I told them that I had the Choice Extra pack + HBO + Starz/Encore. It was running me about $95 a month, so I figured I would see if I could get some kind of discount if I upgraded to the Premier plan and got all the channels. The moron I spoke to said that if I stayed with my current plan, I could get the $10 a month discount. But if I went up to the Premier plan, there was no discount! :-o

I hadn't seen this forum before, so when I did a web search and found it I read every posting (16 pages! lol). Then, I felt I was ready to deal with 'em!

I got HD in April, and since it automatically renews your contract for 2 years (I didn't know that til I read it here!), I was only 6 months into my contract. The lady in Retentions was quick to point that out. She also explained that if I decided to bail and go to Dish or Fios then it would cost me $372 for ETF. I argued that I wasn't aware of the "new contract with HD" feature, and I thought it was BS (I slipped and actually used foul language! lol). She said all she could do was give me the $10 a month discount, otherwise I was hosed. I hung up.

After a few minutes, I started gettin' a little grumpy. I called retentions back, and talked to someone else. I was ready to speak with a supervisor, but this lady seemed like she was actually concerned. She saw that I had been a customer for a couple years, so my first contract would have been up anyway. She said she could give me a little somethin' somethin' for my time.

Here's what I got:
NFL Sunday Ticket $57.99 a month (since the season is almost half over) for 4 months
That comes with the Premier pack (all the channels except the Adult stuff and the 5 extra HD ones)
Free HD access ($10 a month) for 6 months
Extra $10 a month discount for 6 months
Oh yeah - I also went with the HDExtra (like 5 more HD channels) for free for 3 months, then I can cancel if it sucks.

So with my HD and SD receiver fees and the Protection plan, it comes up to $58-somethin a month. The lady in retentions said when the 4 months is up, just call retentions back and they will set me up with another deal to keep me happy. Moral of the story: It took 3 calls, but it cut my TV bill almost in half and gave me a ton of extra programming. If I could only work a deal on the Adult channels! lol ;-)

hi there, how hard is it to set up the HD DVR by yourself? I am good with technical stuff, just want to know if there is anything special I need to know? I already have a HD receiver and I want to upgrade to HD DVR but I don't want to pay for installation. Thanks.

Wow, I had no idea this could be done! I'm payin $60 mo and I don't even have a DVR! I want one real bad but don't want to pay over $100 to get it.

I wonder if it's better to use the "my neighbor" line or the "cancel for dish" line?
I want to call today but not sure how to go about it....
Help??

I would use the "Cancel for DishNetwork" Line. If you dont get what you want hang up and try again. If you are not currently in a contract then push for as much as possible since your going to be signing a new 2 yr agreement.

Ok...beggers can't be choosers huh? I just got off the phone and I got a free HD DVR with free installation but I have to pay the $19.99 delivery charge.
I also got HBO and starz free for 3 months.
I don't know if it's greed or what but I feel like I should have gotten more...they wouldn't give me the $10 off for a year since I got the DVR for free.
So now my bill goes up $15 dollars mo. for HD and DVR service....and I'm locked in for 2 more years.
did I do OK? I'm not aggressive at all!!

Could I call back in a month or so and get those monthly fees waived possibly??
I can't believe I'm getting a DVR!! Woohoo!

If you were not currently in a contract w/ them you could have got alot more. If you dont like what you were offered hang up and try again. Also, make sure your talking to the CSR dept.

It felt like I was pulling teeth to get what i did get. Since it's a done deal, all I can do is try for other stuff later I guess. I stated "cancel service" so I'm pretty sure I was directed to the CSR dept. Next time I'll ask. ;)

I think you were at the right place. The regular customer service monkeys don't give out DVRs. But sometimes the Retentions people are pretty tight, too. You should call back and tell them that you have been thinking about it and you feel that you deserve more since you were signing up for a whole new 2-year contract and your price is going up. Tell them that Dish Network would have given you the DVR for free too, and since you were already a DirecTV customer they should be taking care of you. Call back a couple times if necessary. Note: It's always best to get yourself a little "worked up" first. Get yourself in a frame of mind where you honestly feel like you are being shafted, no matter how guilty you feel about what you already got from them. You know that everyone else on this board is getting more, and you have been a paying customer for a long time. You could easily take your business elsewhere, but you are giving them the chance to keep you... for a price! ;)

One of the things they gave me on Friday was the last 4 months of NFL Sunday Ticket for free. At game time on Sunday, I realized that I didn't get any of the games in HD! I called Cust Svc and the girly told me that you don't get that unless you sign up for the SuperFan pack (an extra $24.75 a month!)... even though I already had HD service! She said a lot of people complained about it. After I got off the phone, I checked my account online and it said I had "NFL Sunday Ticket w/free SuperFan." I was p*ssed! So I called back and talked to someone else, and they said "Yep... it says you get it free!" So they hooked me up with that too. I just can't believe that they charge $400 for 3-4 hours of HD sports programming, one day a week for 5 months!

Sure, just call retentions and tell them how you'd like to get HD but don't want to pay for a new receiver to get it. Speak to the right guy in the nice right way and I see no reason why they wouldn't try to get you a receiver for free since it's going to add to your bill (you can try to get that discount another time).

I'd really like to try this, but even when being logged in on the site, I keep getting "Access Error" when I try to download (and that's on DirecTV's end, not mine).
