I appreciate your help and thriftiness in advance!
I will be using the laptop for internet use and will install engineer software on it as well (mathematical computation stuff).
The minimum setting I was wanting was:
- Any brand (Sony, HP or Dell)
- Intel Core 2 Duo (2.0GHz)
- 4GB RAM memory
- Hard disk 320GB
- Multiformat DVD±RW/CD-RW drive (blu-ray if possible but certainly not needed)
- 15" LCD widescreen display
- Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (onboard, but dedicated would be nice too)
Budget is $900 and I am in Texas (which equals being taxed on dell.com).
Thanks again!

For mathematical computational stuff, I recommend the fastest CPU you can afford that's within your budget.
If you don't mind a 16", here's a great deal:

wait a couple weeks and the major oems and retailers will be offering free upgrades to windows 7 when it comes out... not that important for you now, as a student, as you can get academic-licensed software for cheap at school, but it will add to the laptop's resale value when you're done with it.

I have been looking for a similar laptop. The best I can find for the price ($999) is the Asus G51VX-RX05. It has 1gb of video RAM which is nice. However, weighs 7.3 lbs. and only has 2hr and 7min of battery life (with the nvidia graphics turned on, i'm guessing). However, I am willing to sacrifice portability for power, as I already own an upgraded MSI wind netbook.
