Im getting the feeling this is some backwater, hicksville when it comes to medicine. Im really surprised since they have Tripler Hostpital and just built a new Med Research Center.

SHL it is true that its idiopathic -- they dont often know the cause. The whole area of the ear seems in a primitive state now. Sure they have the same kind of bioengineering hype about regenerating hair cells studying birds and all that MRI, Cat Scan breakthrough hype --- but actually their tools are really crude.

On top of the that these people here are not just clueless, criminally clueless. As SHL information sites say, its an EMERGENCY and they list plenty of tests and possible treatments. ive been calling one doc after another and going to one after another for a person Im trying to help and generally the answer -- do a simple audio hearing test , YUP deaf. Solution? Sit on our asses for a few weeks and see what happens. Thats TOO LATE according to the SHL sites its an EMERGENCY that needs immediate treament.

Anyone interested in learning about SHL which you or someone you know may suffer check this one of MANY sites out:

Its an EMERGENCY. Time is critical. Ive gotten stonewalled or I see indifference everywhere I go.

Finally after reading this I find out you should go to a neurotologist. But guess what? You cant see one for weeks at a time. You have to get a doc to refer you and as I said the docs here are very reluctant to not only do anything , especially quickly but to even refer you to a neurotologist. Ive been calling and calling about that for a few days. They were talking me out of seeing them initially, saying it wasnt likely that since they had an MRI from way back. That was then , this is now and thats not the only thing they do to test for SHL.

A lot of docs and hospitals are criminally out of the of the loop here and you wonder what else they just arent up to speed in.
Its already 2.5 weeks , I took her to a doc 2 days after it happened and the main hospital Straubs did NOTHING except treat her for the usual --- antibiotic and fluids.Their ENT was totally out of it. I then quickly called around one after another until I found ONE doc who agreed to quickly do steroids --- one of the most common treatments. He only agreed because I read up on the topic and pushed him. Now hes out of town on vacation and refuses to do acyclovir.

So far very erratic and poor results. Small imrprovement one day , down the next. So I read more SHL sites and about half the other sites mention simultaneous use of Acyclovir to combat viruses and she had a horrendous case of shingles due to the real cause of all of this -- more doctor incompetence and indifference (chemo usage for high platelet counts not cancer which he should have been monitoring like a hawk). I cant get one doc to even see her quickly let alone prescribe acyclovir. Each time it takes days even weeks and I find out they are as clueless as the former. I seem to find resistence to spend for treatments or even do anything everywhere I turn. Theres a -- lets wait a couple months and see , NEXT PATIENT ! Nobody is really doing anything or in control of the situation.

I need to find a SHL specialist since everyone in Honolulu seems like they are out of it 70 yr old docs or just plain not up on the topic docs, who seem to want to spend 20 min on you then forget you for the next patient if they cant find a simple by-the-manual treatment -- assembly line fashion. Its already probably too late but I want to keep trying since its within the time window. The first day would have been better and I had to call multiple docs and push and push and read all the websites to get info to even get the steroids within 1 week. Everytime I get more radical and pushy I think I should have done that a few days ago.

Its really a crime. A totally healthy person goes in and gets supposedly super mild chemo for high platelets and suddenly suffers a string of horrific infections and the doc just sits on his ass as he monitors her week to week. She finally ends up in the emergency room for a fever , has chronic pains all over -- earache , head pains and hoarse throat and several docs just keep writing it off as normal flu giving her antibiotics over and over until a second hospital stay and deafness. And still nothing just basic antibiotics and being told to go home.

It seems clear her immune system was compromised and she has been suffering from some kind of super bug or viral infection since she had the spate of shingles outbreaks and other infections.

I guess they need to finally end their great treatment by making her crippled and blind too as they keep giving her aspirins until she passes away then they can blame it on old age.

If some one knows a specialist in LA that might be fine too. I can find her a place in LA probably.

Just be aware a lot of antibiotics and painkillers can be Ototoxic --- poison for your ears and a lot of docs are clueless or indifferent. You have to research everything you take yourself.

Check out this --- I cant believe the criminally negligent attitudes the more I read up on this stuff. I kick my self for ever trusting docs and leaving gullible people to totally depend on them. It makes me sick thinking about all those simpletons out there, old people -- maybe alone or taken care of by people who arent particularly intelligent or motivated to watch out for them properly too who just trust the doc.

Look at the list of stuff thats ototoxic. It can destroy your hearing and balance making you an invalid.
http://www.hearinglosshelp.com/articles/ototoxicupheaval.htm

I see Tramadol is listed here too. That was given by the hematologist the same guy who gave her chemo who didnt bother adjusting it while he got reports she was in the hospital and sick many times. She also saw a ENT months ago. All CLUELESS even with obvious signs.

Great idea --- giving someone chemo and TRAMADOL who is complaining of a constant ear ache after taking the chemo.

Allopurinol a gout med is listed and there was a recent article on how gout is spreading as a problem in all the papers this week.

If you are taking lots of high blood pressure meds, anti-depression meds, pain killers etc. look them up for ototoxity and other side effects.
Your doc wont tell you and you may have to hit a hearing loss site because its often hidden by drug makers -- they tend to list only a few innocuous side effects and sometimes a few really bad ones and leave many others out.

I only know thing due to the hearing loss incident but who knows , there might be a host of drugs causing blindness and other problems too that are hidden.

Frankly I now believe the fair amount of hearing loss my father is experiencing too wasnt a natural aging thing --- he has been gobbling high blood pressure meds, gout meds and a host of other stuff robotically because his doc told him to decades ago. When confronted with it he would yell you arent a doctor. Im sure tons of people are like that. I recently got him to get off a lot of them when I talked him into taking a non-Vet Admin doc and then reviewing all the meds he took and asked them to take him off any meds he didnt need due to him eating a decent diet. It turned out he didnt need a lot of them but he insisted on taking allopurinol again for his gout. GEE think thats a smart idea with his progressive hearing loss?

Its just plain shocking the state of things out there. Luckily Ive avoided most hospitals etc or I probably would be taking tons of things right now too and maybe have gobbled down painkillers or something and gone deaf , blind and unable to walk.

Someone has to get the word out and get the docs and hospitals to treat SHL as an emergency and get them up to speed on it. There should be some advocate who makes sure all people have a responsible caretaker that is informed of what is going on in detail or that the patient really fully understand what they are getting into. Otoxocity and other problems should be fully disclosed. It really becomes a problem when idiots prescribe multiple things that can be toxic.

If you have a parent, aunt or uncle or other friend or relative who isnt the sharpest knife in the drawer dont assume the doctor is on top of things. They are super busy and tend to dispense things by rote and since they have to cover a vast field of knowledge you can often get better info by doing a websearch on a particular topic unless its their super specific specialty.

Can you believe the logic of that -- here take this thing toxic to your ears to kill the pain in your ears! Whats the odds that someone with severe pain may take too much and kill their ears ????? Especially when they arent warned at all.

And she didnt do that. In fact she was really conservative and took way way under the dose recommended by the doc.

Horrific update --- Ive been calling and calling switching from one doc to another because of all the feet dragging. The one doc that agreed to at least do the steroids has gone on vacation didnt return my calls before going and seems unwilling to do more.
So Ive been calling around to get a neurologist and even another ENT willing to do the a proper diagnostic and treatment routine which is impossible around here. A person on the phone making appointments made a chilling comment saying her parents also had problems in this area and that theres this attitude among the med profession that their time has come so they dont feel they should really put out that much effort to help them -- sort of like a defacto rationining system. Its horrific to think they even informally let people get crippled and die becaue they are older patients.
