I just wanted to let folks know that we have a Thumbs-Down bandit loose in the freebies Forum and Kel be is trying to do what she can to discourage people from using the 'Thumbs-Down" rating as a way of expressing personal dislike for various Original Posters. It's not just me that's been hit with it. It looks as if somebody is now targetting Jen W as well which is plain stupid.
These ratings are supposed to be helpful. When someone is permitted to just run around automatically rating everything a few people post with a thumbs down, it discourages new postings and confuses people.
Other webistes have had problems with this and have chosen to do away with postive/negative ratings. i hope that doesn't have to happen here.
Might I suugest that if it's at all possible to disable the option to make a negative rating, but to leave the possibility of postive ratings, that might cure the epidemic. Then - at a later date, the Mods can reinstate the ability to use thumbs-down without telling anyone and we can all go back to normal.
if that's not mechanically possible - perhaps the mods should consider punishing people who routinely mark other peoples posts with a thumbs down but fail to say why the offer sucks.
kel be should not have to waste her time with this crap, but I'm glad she's taken the intitiative. It's simply so childish.
Thanks for reading.

mods don't, but there are logs for the admin to check.

well - simply posting this thread may serve to make it stop.
I appreciate what kel be has done to try and discourage vengeance thumbs down. Just knowing she's on top of it may stop some people from behaving that way

I suggest that an Admin should check. I've been victim of this when rk74 was around and I know how much of a PITA it is.
Mr. SD, do you mind checking & letting me know in a PM so I can talk to the person (people). (NM, I'll ask in a PM when I get home from work ;) )

I noticed the Thumbs down "bandit" a long time ago. It seems as if this person was just out to irritate and if he didnt agree with your opinion, he thumbs down the entire thread.
I dont know how important the thumbs-down is in the freebie forum. No freebie is a guarantee and unless its a UK or dead-site item, I see no reason for the Thumbs down in the freebie forum. Same for the C&S thread.
Now, in the deals forum.. I think they should allow it but even then, some people, for example, those who dont get in on the deal, will thumbs down it out of pure jealousy. How ignorant.
I sure hope the banned person was the one who has been PMing and emailing me with their stupid messages about my being "classless" and "dumb".
Or, maybe the "critic", who seems to think he knows it all in every post. I dont have to name names...I see more people commenting on him and his "posts" all the time.

I doubt the history of a banned thumbs down abuser will inspire others to do it. If they do then Natural Selection will have taken its course when they get banned.
BTW, doesn't bumping this thread do exactly what you chided the OP?

Kel be was right when she said the Thumbs Down epidemic had stopped. I'd like to thank her and the Amdins for all the work they did on it. If it had just been me that had been effected, I wouldn't have posted. It was seeing other prolific new deal posters getting their threads badly rated that annoyed me.
Noobs DO look at ratings and so do I to an extent. If I see more than one thumbs downs, I don't usually bother to look. One thumb down however, can just mean sour grapes. The thumbs up ratings are more helpful to me. You see a deal you passed on get a thumbs up and it makes you think.
I'm thrilled this was resolved and thank everyone who worked towards that resolution. if we could now just do something about the insane number of reposts again in the freebie forum.... (I can dream can't I? hehe)

I can't force people to read the rules, if you know what I mean. Just keep Mod Alerterting them. If someone becomes habititual, mention it. IIRC, we now have a warning for not adhiring to the rules!

Well, When I become Empress of the Universe, I swear, the first order of business will be conveying upon all the SD Mods & Admins, the Superpower to Mentally compell all Users, including me, to read the rules for posting whenever they feel we could use a referesher!
Ain't none of us perfect.
More than the reposts, the kids who shout "REPOST!" bug me even more. They live in a wolrd where Kel be apprently has no life other than Slick Deals and can hear their typed shouts the moment they hit submit!:lmao:
I try and edumacate them by quoting the procedure for Mod Alerting a repost, but it rarely works. <sigh>
At least the magazine Noobs are much quicker to adapt. Bless them, they almost always remembe where to find the Official request thread once you show them the breadcrumb path leading to it! Perhaps it's because they read 150 free mags a month! (mag fiends rule!)

Just keep doing that, so when I give them a warning, they can't say they didn't know
