So looking for a first set. but I'm broke as it gets. Looks like a decent starter set is 250 or more. Im nervous to buy from Craigslist b/c i know nothing about inspecting clubs. I was hoping to get a deal from someone who spent decent $$s on clubs but now doesnt play anymore. I saw this set. looks ok but i have no clue, i assume if it is $60 they weren't too much to begin with see here:
http://baltimore.craigslist.org/spo/1233027082.html
any ideas if the sites that sell refurbs are a good option?
Thanks for any help.

thanks, checked it out, seems everyone has their own opinion. but in my case, spending 200 now is NOT going to happen, so i am in the market for a used setup it seems/

If i were you, i would definatly use ebay or something, you will find more products and better quality. Try to stick with brand names and things like that. You should worry about forgivness if your just starting out. You can definatly build a nice little set with your budget, it will just take some researching on ebay and google. If you want brand new, Go to gigagolf.com, they will custom build the clubs to your heigth, hand size and arm length. I bought my first set of brand new irons for 150ish. and a few fairway woods for like 20 each. I splurged on a taylormade burner for the driver. Not bad place and fast shipping.
Also, Rockbottomgolf.com, 3balls.com and gigagolf.com
Here are a few examples of easy starts
http://www.rockbottomgolf.com/adams-golf-2008-tight-lies-irons-set.html
Adams golf is a major brand, these are a great starter set and it has Hyrbrids.
http://www.rockbottomgolf.com/woods-drivers.html
they have some cheap drivers also.
Hope some of this helps

i think i will go the classified (Craigslist ) way.
i do loads of ebay, but i would not buy clubs that i cant see in advance in person. they are so heavy to ship back if i have an issue.

Personally, I wouldn't be afraid to pick up a set from Walmart, Target, or K-mart. You can find a starter set for around $100. They aren't the best clubs, but for a beginner they are more than enough. Realistically they should last you a few years of playing, before you need to purchase higher end clubs, if you are really serious. Otherwise, they do just fine.

i was thinking about checking out Target, need to buy a glove anyway.
if you're going to look at cheap clubs, try ebay. you can get some off-brand clubs for definately under $100 - new

That Adams golf iron set, is that the same set on this complete set? http://www.rockbottomgolf.com/adams-golf-2008-tight-lies-complete-golf-set-with-bag.html
If not, what do you think of the complete set instead or do you recommend a better set out there?
Thanks

Have you looked into getting clones? I bought a set from Gigagolf.com about 4 years ago and they have served me very well. They are still in fairly good condition. I shoot around 100, was shooting around 125 when I started, not the best golfer but the clubs are great for a beginner. I didn't want to spend much either in case I didn't continue with the sport. I will be upgrading to a"real" set this year.
i would check them out (your money will go farther) as they use high quality grips, shafts and heads are very close to calloway, pong etc.... you can get a set of 4-PW for $169.
