hi moderators i was wondering if you guys plan on including pictures in the hot deal so ppl have a idea of the product. slickdeals has that might help people understand what the product looks like.

I dont think they will to limit dialup users, however small to medium sized pics dont really take that long to load, even on dialup and I have posted before that I think [img] tags should be enabled in the hot deals forum.

You can link to images.

Just click on the link in the thread. Its easier to click plus you can put in more threads and posts because pictures take up room.

If several posters include several images, a thread could easily jump to several hundred KB, which would result in dialup download times of over a minute or more per page.

I agree with the OP. I think it would be a great improvement and simplify sorting through deals you are not interested in. Quite a few sites do this currently and for fear of censure :banned: I will not name them. (1 (http://slickdeals/)) (2 (http://dealnews.com/)) Nor will I link to them.

The problem I see is that it seems to take away from the sense of community that this site has. Every deal would have to be screened, hotlinked, etc. Then you would have posts that were devoid of personality.

To tell you the truth, I look at quite a few sites like the ones above for their user friendliness and maneuverability, but I always come back to good ole' slickdeals.

It bears thinking about, but may be impractical when all is said and done.

Dial up users could always choose to not show images in posts.

Dial up users could always choose to not show images in posts.True, but the procedure for selecting option would need to be made much easier; a selection the neophyte could handle with one click of a prominent link, otherwise first-time dialup users would be discouraged.

Posters would substitute imbedded images for links, so there may be fewer links, and then the dialup users would lose out.

It would make the most sense for it to be set where images are not displayed by default. Particularly for the sake of guest users, who cannot manually change options.

If this worked such that when you have images disabled you see a thumbnail you can click on for the full image (as is done for large attached images), it would be OK. But that would mean producing and storing a thumbnail locally, which seems like a bad idea. The alternative would be to just display a text link to the image. Presumably this would mean all such links would be:

http://img.slickdeals.net/imagesd/slickdealslogonew3.gif

And not:

Logo is here (http://img.slickdeals.net/imagesd/slickdealslogonew3.gif)

As they can be now (when posters put in the effort). In order to do it this way and keep the descriptive text, you would need to use something similar to alt-tags to embed text with the picture. And that substantially breaks for vBulletin conventions, so it's going to confuse new users more.

Good idea. So the default is that nothing is shown, but regular users would be able to see the item the deal refers to? Sounds fine to me.

My other question would be on the size/type of image and where it would be shown. Should you have to click on the deal link to see the picture or would it be prominently displayed to the side?

I see your edit now, we're on the same track...

Took me a minute to get my thoughts together :)

I feel the OP should be allowed to post one and only one image (picture) with some width x height limits. There can always be a link but a picture can say thousand words !

Considering the overwhelming amount of post's we have here, even if you did have a 5-15 kb image in a post it's to much. If each OP post's a image, imagine how much bandwidth would be taken up just by viewing it. Just think 3 thread's with one image in each thread. Each thread gets 10,000 plus views (hot deal of course), you do the math.

I like it the way it is plain & simple.
