Basically we have a VERY fledgling company and we are printing out our business plan. We want a new phone number - not our personal numbers We anticipate maybe 2 calls/month on it (for now) and don't even want to answer it... we just want it to roll to voicemail. We don't mind using our current landline or personal cells for OUTGOING calls so we basically need voicemail only.

Cheap pay-as-you-go cellular?
Basic landline? Our current FIOS landline wants $29/month to add a line.
VOIP? But quality is important...
one of those virtual office things...

HELP!

Since nobody answered this ----- pay as you go cell phone plans can be CHEAP. They do have the ability to record any messages though I dont know if it will what you want. You can get a cheapo 20 buck tracfone or Tmobile and buy a 10 buck card to check how their service is.

Tracfones in fact come with I think 15 min with every phone. Many have DMFL double min for life , they double any minutes you add so a 30 min card becomes 60 min and they have codes all over the net which may add more. So you dont even have to buy a card to check them out. Sometimes they have a deal for 20 bucks with a 60 min card.

The lowest you can probably get that service -- buy a 60 min card for 20 bucks every 3 months. They expire every 3 mos so you add the card every 3 mos. That obviously comes out to 80 bucks a year for 4 x 60 or 4 x 120 if you have DMFL.

Another alternative is sign up for the 5 buck extension of existing minutes for one month value plan. Its free and what it does is anytime you let your minutes expire , it automatically charges your CC 5 bucks for a 1 mo extension.

So since you have such super low requirements for time -- 2 x 60 min cards $40 , 6 mos of extensions at 5 bucks each 30 = 70 but you only have 120 min for the whole year or 240 if you have DMFL. Thats slightly around 5-6 bucks a mo.

The better deal if you need more minutes is the Tmobile plan 1000 min a year but you have to pay 100 bucks for that card and then more for a phone. They have phones from 20-100. In fact posters here , including me --- have been trying to figure out the lowest deal for a Tmobile phone preferably the Nokia 3500. A little while ago it was free with a 150 cost minus huge rebate and BING cashbacik. Now it 39 I think with a 8% cashback. Hopefully in August some other deal will pop up making it cheaper.

FYI sipgate is not worth if you are going to make calls from it , it turns out to be expansive

If you have a fios line or even DSL, just get some magicjacks. They work fine, and are almost free, and come with free voicemail. You can even shut off your computers at night, then just get your voicemail the next morning or at home on the web. Pick your area code and number. You can pick them up at RadioShack or other electronics stores. $40 for the first year (all calls included), $20 every YEAR after that.

I use my magicjack when traveling overseas, it works great, people think I'm home in California.
