I need a cellphone to text about 50 messages and talk on for about 20 minutes a month. Is there something I can get without signing up for a plan?

Since you do so little talking, you'd do well with a pay-as-you-go phone from any of the major companies. I happen to have VirginMobile - I pay the minimum ($20 every 3 months) and do all the talking and texting I need. Calls are 20 cents / minute, and texts are maybe 15 cents each. So you'd be looking at around 12 dollars a month. Others might be even cheaper, but at least VM is one option for you:)
