I know this has been discussed before but I couldnt find the thread when I searched....

ANNNYWAY...

I think Mr Slick should get rid of the "Thumbs Down" feature. I dont think people use the feature as it was intended.

Its being used personally and not practically.

JMO.

I agree with Jen. I have seen this feature used as a way to be rude or mean way too many times. It does not seem to serve a purpose. I think folks will decide for themselves wheter or not they want to particpate in a deal. The icon of "TUP/TDown" will not change that.

I like thumb down...
it gets rid of over hype thumb up
it tells me to stay away the deal.
I sometimes follow the deals base on thumbs up and thumb down.
5 thumbsup = I jump in on the deal
5 thumbsdown = I am definitely stay away.

Thumb up doesn't always use it as intended too. That's why 1 or 2 thumbs up/down usually don't fully indicate it's good or bad deal until 4 or 5 is reach.

Good points, App. However, I guess my main concern is the tup/tdown in the freebies forum. I can see how you might want to use it to judge and rate other deals. But in the freebies, alot of folks seem to use the feature just to be mean.

What about thumbs up/down with a mandatory comment field that can be viewed optionally?

The problem I have is some posts go 3 thumbs down with no description in the post and then all of a sudden someone with a clue shows up and says, "Hey this post is great. I'm in for 3." Then all of a sudden everyone is jumping on the deal.

Comments might help to eliminate some of the arbitrary/personal attacks as well.

Or not.

See here (http://forums.slickdeals.net/showpost.php?p=1722659&postcount=8) for more reasoning.

At least get rid of the thumbs down feature for newbs, because most of them just like to A) take advantage of slickdeals, never post anything or even show appreciation or B) threadcrap (and gives thumbs down, sometimes without even posting) if the deal doesn't work for them, or if they just don't like the product the OP posted.

I agree if you thumb up/down u must also say why! That would lead to having two sets of comments, one in the posts and one with the thumbs up/down vote

People need to take the thumbs up/down system as it is intended, which is as a general indicator which should be taken with a grain of salt:I like thumb down...

Good points Xnarg, but how to ensure it IS used correctly? Just deal with the frustration?

:sadwalk: Ok.

:sadwalk: Ok.On the net, we can't ensure ANYTHING is used correctly, just hope that overall the trend is valid.

I don't know how bad the problem is in Freebies. Sorting posts by rating, there don't seem to be many that have a lot of down thumbs, and there are plenty with multiple up thumbs.

Smart SDers evaluate the deal itself and look past ratings, especially when it's obvious that the rating has little to do with the deal.

We "old timers" know to overlook the multiple thumbs down but some newbies and others without experience wont know the difference.

And, its not just in Freebies.. although I dont think t-u/ t-d belongs in a freebie forums anyway cause anything for free is always a gamble.

Its in general.

Theres enough threadcrapping and debating within the threads to let people know the deal sucks or the deal is worth taking a shot at.

Dont you think it makes the thread look bad though? When I see a thumbs down ( especially ) It makes me want to go in and try it just to be able to prove them wrong.

Some of these posts are just plain dumb and out of jealousy or meaness.

Why give them liberty when they just abuse it?

i'm gonna have to go with the apple on this one. i also use the 5 tu/td as an indicator. i like the feature.

yeah, I like it as well. It takes multiple people to get a single t-up or t-dn so one person, unless useing multiple accounts, cannot give a 5 t-dn rating to a single thread. In other words it's not one person being mean- possibly a group of, what does it take 3 thumb votes or so per thumb, so that would make 9 people at least.

Stating why you thumb in the thread WILL be mistaken for, or considered threadcrapping so that's not going to work.

Mr. SD has the ability to see who votes. 1 user had someone purposely voting thumbs down w/o commenting. After Mr. SD looked into it, the voter was banned. When I suspect that someone is just being spiteful, I ask for Mr. SD to look into it & do what he feels is necessary.

I feel mixed on the tup/tdown thing. Ive been browsing SD for well over a year, and the up/down has made it easyer to find deals, but ive seen it abused quite a bit.

One can always ignore tu/td if one doesn't trust it.
