I just moved into a new place and I am paying for cable internet but I do not have a modem yet. I have no idea how much cable modems usually cost but Ive heard that they are expensive if you buy them from the cable company.

Anyone know where I could get a cheaper one? Also, is there any kind of compatibility issue with different providers?

This is a good modem

I have used it with Comcast. They used to give it free earlier but now they do not

Try giving your cable company a call and ask them if they have used modems. I know the cable company here in AZ does this, they only cost 30 bucks from them and have i believe a 3 or 6 month warranty.

::Edit:: P.S. Thumbs up on the above modem if your going new.

Does your provider not rent modems?

I rent only because as it is their equipment they have a responsibility for it if it fails.

My modem dropped last year and it took three days to replace (so they credited the fees). I have been through 3 modems so far.

If does end up costing more to rent, but I would take the luxury of not having to be responsible for the equipment (plus the support is better for company equipment).

I also "rent" my cable box (severals of those I have gone through as well).

I've rented for awhile but have been looking to buy. I think buying is the better decision. As long as you get one that doesnt break down within 18 months, its paid for itself
