What's considered a good deal on a laptop?

Hey everybody.

My girlfriends birthday is coming up Sept 7th, and I'm looking to get her a laptop. I really don't know anything about pricing, best brands, features, etc these days, let alone what price to be expecting.

My price range is about $400 - would it be too much to try and find a dual core with a couple gigs of ram and a built in webcam? Also, is something like an LED screen essential, or would LCD be just fine?

Any suggestions would be awesome. Thanks a bunch guys :)!

The price after discounts and coupons was $540 before the warranty and tax. That was almost 1 year ago. You can't even find a deal like that in stores and Sunday ads today!
