I just got a Pioneer Elite bluray player BDP-05FD clearance for $287+tax from BB. Should I keep it or take the PS3 Slim version for $299? Please advise,
thanks

Hopefully someone can comment on this more, but from what I've read, the player is pretty slow -
Power to eject may take 30 seconds. Load times with Blu-ray can take a while too - 45 secs.
However, I'll have you know that I DON'T have the 05FD, but I DO have the 51FD and these experiences may not translate.
That being said, know that in my own situation, even though I read reviews that it (the 51FD that I eventually bought) was slow, I bought the 51FD based on the fact that picture quality would be great on both SD via DVD and HD via blu-ray.
I'm sure the Elite would do the same for your own content! Picture quality is pretty amazing. (I don't like to exaggerate.)
Know that the 05FD also has better analog audio connectors. (I know that I'm missing a few other features that the 05FD has over the 51FD but I can't recall them right now...)
Someone, feel free to chime in and help the OP.
The 05FD also is not Blu-ray profile 2.0 compatible. This is important if you wish to view BD live content.
I've read that the PS3 Slim is a pretty good Blu-ray player as well, but there is much to be desired in its ability to upconvert DVDs.
On my own PS3 (fat), the PS3 is profile 2.0 compatible and is a SPEED DEMON in regards to Blu-ray playback. (Probably with DVD as well, I've just never tested it.) Operations are both quick and responsive.
The bottom line:
If picture quality (both DVD and Blu-ray) take precedence, go with the 05FD.
If you have an expensive, extensive analog sound system, go with the 05FD.
If you prefer to have speed at the tip of your fingers, go with the PS3 Slim.
(Obviously, if you also want to play games, stream content, etc etc, go with the PS3 Slim.)
