I searched Slickdeals site for Las Vegas, and found tons of hotel deals & travel deals, but I'm wondering about what to do when we get there? I will be traveling with my wife, we will be staying from Sunday the 13th to Sunday the 20th. Any locals, or people familiar with the area, that can tell us where to drink, where to eat, shows to see and anything else (in that order:bounce: ), would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
JJK

Cirque du Soleil shows are amazing. Or, any of the illusionist shows (Criss Angel, etc). Hit up Freemont Street (the 'old Strip) in the evening. Rent a car for a day, or take a charter bus tour, to the Hoover Dam (it's only a 30 mile drive).

Absolutely nothing unless you like to gamble.

Plenty of shows, live comedy, drinking, just wandering around hotels, shopping, drinking. There is the wax museum.

To drink: Depends what kind of atmosphere and stuff you like. Pretty much the only place on the strip to get a decent beer (as of last year when I was there) is Pour 24 in NY NY -- unfortunately its right inside and there's a lot of foot traffic around you - a lot of people just stop and get daquiris or whatever. The bartenders are generally cool though, if they realize you really like beer they're very nice and attentive -- and we ended up getting a free one when they had a shift change, the bartender we'd been chatting with just waved off our money and left.
There are a lot of bars with cool atmosphere to hang out in inside strip casinos (try Rouge in the MGM, the revolution bar in .... the mirage?, uhhhh every casino has one in that vein). There are also good restuarants for drinking, first in my mind being the Diablo place out front of the Monte Carlo ..... or was it TI?
Basically my man and I walk up and down picking up coupons for buy one get one drinks and meals and then just decide where we want to go from there. There is booze EVERYWHERE, just stop someplace that looks fun, have a drink, if you hate it leave.
For Food: There's a really good mexican place in NYNY that is reasonably (for vegas) priced. We eat there at least once every time we go -- if you are friendly with the staff and (for example) say you honestly want your food authentically spicy you get some good results. We also like Diego in the MGM, a little more money and more fusiony, but cool decor and good food -- amazing salsas. Also awesome is the cafe in the wynn. Technically its the same crummy cafe that every hotel has, but its hte wynn's cafe so for a couple extra dollars you get food that is head and shoulders above everyone else. There is a carnegie deli in the ...Mirage? That has gigantic HUGE sandwiches and tasty pickles (although weak brown mustard imo). Great for sharing which also makes it fairly inexpensive.
I don't generally do buffets, but last time we got dragged to the Rio buffet where teh food was not bad (for a buffet food) and they had these fun specials they'd announce where you had 15ish minutes to go to the bar and get whatever drink they were offering for some super small price. My parents like to go to the Wynn Buffet and use the timing trick -- show up right before breakfast (or lunch if you want the dinner buffet) ends and they will charge you teh cheaper price. Sit down at your table. order your drinks, and wait a few minutes while they swap the food to the lunch/dinner food. Same stuff, but by getting there 15 minutes early you paid less (and you get the freshest stuff!)
For your fancy dinner (if you're up for one) I recommend craftsteak. HIGHLY. However be warned, the huge prices don't mean tiny plates like at some restuarants. Portions are LARGE and the sides are EXCELLENT. Unless they are doing a special (they sometimes have 60/person tasting menus which are amazing deals) I recommend you get 1 steak (I love the skirt steak, my bf loves the flank steak and those are actually 2 of the cheaper ones -- really excellent food) to share, the yukon gold potato puree, the baby shitake mushrooms (coming from two people who strongly dislike mushrooms otherwise), and a salad if you're salad people. If they have hte monkey bread/pull apart bread, get that for dessert. You'll walk away stuffed and a little poorer.
If you want more food/drink stuff PM me and i'll send you more. My boyfriend loves vegas and i love eating, and we both love various kinds of alcoholic beverages. I got lots of this.
Show wise, we usually check for deals online and get great things. There is a secret to most of them -- they block out sections of seats for hte discount and fill them WORST seats first -- the earlier you buy the worse your seat is. Check out hte Blue Man Group, Cirque du soleil, La Reve, etc. All shows are sort of the same in the end, it just depends what you want. I got front row seats for Zumanity by waiting until the last minute to purchase them. They are usually on the side too which matters very little for some shows and matters a lot for others - check the theatre layout before you buy. If you want to see a topless show, they always have em at Tix4tonite -- i recommend X burlesque at the flamingo. avoid the one at the Luxor.
