I've given my opinion in many places about the beer's i've tasted. Might as well have a thread about it. Feel free to add.

Currently having a Shiner Blonde.

A bit too light for my tastes, but a good Spring/Summer lager. Light, crisp, not too hoppy. Kind of like a hefeweisen without all the yeast. I tasted a little lemon at the first taste. Prett good. On a scale of 1 to 10, i'd give it a 7.

Special Releases:
This section is a trial run and can and may be deleted if we get little to no action in this section. If you read info about a special release, please post: Brewery, Name of beer(and style if you know it), LOCATION OF THE BREWERY, and the release day of the beer.

Once a beer is established in this list, you can make a bullet underneath it if you see it at your local liquor store(maybe city and state). If you do so, please put your username behind this posting in ( ) so if others possibly in your area want more info at to what store you saw it at, they can PM you. If you want to keep anonymous, by all means don't add your username.

Lastly, if you see old info, please update it. If this list gets cluttered and never gets updated this section will be deleted.

We need a craft brew only thread, so we dont need to hear about any mass produced beers.

There are plenty of mass produced beers which are very very good and the American public typically doesn't know about them.

I drank a Smuttynose IPA last night to relax after I got home. This is good stuff and cheap in these parts, a bomber is about $3. This is a straight up IPA, hoppy and bitter. Not very fruity or malty at all. I like it a lot and I think you will enjoy it too Matt when you get some from Wiles.

Thanks for the kind words everyone and I am doing fine. Now that I know what is wrong I don't have to stress out about it anymore. I am not that old, I am 29, but I thought it might be stoke based on the symptoms. I read online and asked my friend who is a nurse, all signs pointed to a possible stroke. Basically half of my face went really numb all of a sudden. Couldn't control my left eye or that side of my mouth really. It was hard chew and swallow, I couldn't really talk right either. But, no stroke. The doctors did some tests and they said it has to with swelling of some nerve that controls the face muscles. They gave me some meds and said it should go away in a few weeks at most. I work at one of the best hospitals here in Boston, so I have easy access to some great doctors. That is a benefit of my new job I guess.

Got to pick up some brews for Turkey day. Looking forward to some TBF (Turkey, beer, football). :D

Glad it isn't too serious Sox. I had a friend that had part of his face paralyzed temporarily in HS. He hit his head on the corner of a gym locker and apparently that was enough to do it to him. He recovered in a few months, but it sounds like yours is different so I'm sure the Dr.'s few weeks is more accurate for you.

Glad you are doing alright Sox... hopefully the medicine helps you. Apparently the doctor said it was ok to drink and take your meds, you didn't have to be like Matt and stay clear for weeks and weeks.

I hit up Walmart this past weekend in search of the ever elusive $20 dollar huge pot to use on my turkey fryer that Brian and Matt mentioned. The biggest pot that I could find there was a 22 qt (5.5 gallon) stew pot. I thought you guy had said that they had a 26 or 32 qt pot for cheap there?? I found the stew pot with the other pots and pans, they said thye didnt' have any replacement turkey fry pots, just the kits... any help?!?!? Is it somewhere on their site? If I get this I think I would be ready to do some all grain brewing (once I make my wort chiller and the mash tun of course).

Browsed Northern Brewer tonight to decide on what to buy to start brewing. So far, I want the "better basic starter kit" w/ a plastic carboy instead of glass. $109.99. I am also getting a three-piece airlock separately for $1.25. http://www.northernbrewer.com/beer-kits.html

For the extract kits, I'm torn between three choices:

TongueSplitter Extract Kit $33.99 (west coast style pale ale)
Extra Pale Ale Extract Kit $27.50
IPA Extract Kit (Kent Goldings) $36.99

For the yeast - should I do dry or wet? If I do wet, which is a little more expensive, how many ice packs should I buy (I'm only buying 1 extract kit)?

The last thing I'll need to buy is a steel kettle for brewing. Might hit up IKEA for that. Will also need to pick up some priming sugar at a grocery store. Am I missing anything else (extra sanitizer, etc) ? THANKS!

Total comes to $145.99 if I decide to buy the Extra Pale Ale kit with wet yeast. 1-day shipping is $350  $7.99 shipping is my friend

I'd prefer to keep an eye on it. It's good to know for how long and how forcefully the airlocks are bubbling, you know? That way you get some kind of indication of how strong your fermentation is. Just the way a beer looks from Day 1 to Day 14 is a real progression of change. I'd like to see that if it was my first beer. If you don't care, then name it Orphan Ale. I will name your beers too if you like Frog  Please

hey, sorry been really busy...shipping beer is really easy.... just wrap each beer 1-2x around with bubble wrap, put a bunch of newspaper surrounding the outside of the box, and in between rows of beer, and make sure its packed tightly...not shaking around...should sound pretty solid. that means add a bunch of newspapers in the box to achieve this is you have left over space... If you go fedex, you don't have to tell them whats in the box... If you go with UPS, just say its "glassware". really easy to ship, fedex may be a few bucks cheaper..

about your pm, i can't get that dfh pale so that sounds tasty...if its DFH and its not (midas touch, 90min, santo marron) i would like to try.

I never added it up I guess, but I didn't think it would take that long to brew a batch of AG. I did my last extract batch in about 2.5 hours total and I bet I could cut that down to an hour and a half or so if I was using a turkey fryer setup.. Not sure if I want to spend the extra time (yet) to jump to AG if it takes that long.

Holy Head Batman!

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e66/Mavtech/P1010931.jpg

Today, I was experimenting with a new beer and trying to support a local brewery. They only have 2 brews. This one, Lectio Divina (a Belgian), and Saison Athene. The aroma reeked of cheap, fruity champagne. You can see the head above. Man, it sure is very carbonated. It took about 7 minutes for that head to go down. They sell a 750 ml bottle with no cap than can be put back on. It was a cork. The first taste was fruit and alcohol. It tasted every bit of 8% alcohol. I did not finish the pint and I threw the rest out. This is only the 2nd beer I have ever wasted. I give this beer a 4/10. I would rather drink pureed hops than this stuff. I regret putting Very Bad Elf back on the shelf in favor of this stuff.

prep 15 minutes
mash water heating 15
mash 75-90 minutes
sparge 15 minutes
waiting for a boil 15-20 minutes
boil 60-90 minutes
cooling wort(all 5 gallons compared to extract 2 gallons) 20-45 minutes
cleaning all equipment used in process 20 minutes

time varies, i clean and prep during the process of mash and boil to save time...my burner is insane(185,000 btu) and go get ripping if needed..when i cooked on my electric stove it took 7 hours to brew primarily on taking over a hour and half to bring the wort of 6.+ gallons to a boil....and heating mash and sparge water as well...

extract brewing my first time took an hour and a half...

i kinda agree with wiles... i like to watch fermentation to see what exactly is going on...plus it sounds like you are getting a better bottle(clear plastic bottle) fermenter so you can watch the krausen that will occur...kinda cool...plus if your fermentation doesn't go(bad yeast) you will never know until you come back to bottle(take hydrometer reading to check OG and FG).

In what country is 15 the legal age to drink beer?
LOL @ the MBCC acronym.
The feeling is mutual, wiley.

I think she meant 15 years. Although when I was 17 in Spain we used to go out and drink it up every night, on the beach, at bars, wherever... fun times. Although no one ever got piss/puking drunk.

Oh, I see. The "legally" part threw me off. I guess she was implying that she's been drinking it for even longer than that.

That sounds really nice doing that in Spain. I think the legal age in most of Europe is 18, but I heard it's not very strictly enforced. And like you said, kids there don't get wasted like they do here.

Actually, binge drinking is a serious problem facing most Scandinavian countries. Much more so then here. Nothing much to out there but drink. Depressing state to live in during the dead of winter. England ain't doing so hot either.

Wow, I'm pretty legible for a drunkard.

Just ate my dinner here. Black Friday was pretty slow for me. Picked up a few Xbox 360 items off Ebay with Live. Still trying to get a Mini-note from HP, but it doesn't look promising.

Relaxing with some Harpoon Glacier Harvest '08 Wet Hop Beer, from the 100 barrel series. The 100 barrel stuff is small batches and limited release. Different styles of beer each time it comes out, they already have a new German style one out now. I'm digging this beer, it is pretty smooth with good fresh hop taste. I was kind of disappointed in the last Sierra Nevada Wet Hop Ale I tried, but this I like.

Had Three Floyds Alpha King tonight. Two bottles of it. (bought a sixer and will be leaving 4 with my sister in law).

The smell on this APA is downright amazing. One of the best smelling pale ales I've had. Taste was nice and hoppy, pretty bitter, but still balanced. Dang good, but IMO, not worth going out of your way to get. I'd give it an A- or maybe even an A, but it's not something you'll taste and say, "WOW, I can't believe I was missing this!"

If you see it, get it, if you don't see it, you're just missing a darn good pale ale.

As far as what's available out there:

Just finished a Yellow Snow IPA from Rogue. It was OK as far as the style goes, but for some reason I've never been a big fan of Rogue brews. I love their painted labels and the names are cool too. I don't know maybe they lose something flavorwise on the trip eastward. The beers are descent but for the money better brews are to be had IMO. They do make a bunch of different styles though.

I bought a 6-pack of this Breckenridge 471 Small Batch IPA for an ungodly price of $12.99 at BevMo in Arizona. I hate it. 9.2% alcohol... I don't want the other 5. They'll be sitting in my fridge for a while.
http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/759/22527

I was so angry that I didn't get to do what I wanted to beer-wise while in AZ. I had a great beer place mapped out in Tucson called Plaza Liquors where you can make your own 6-packs with their extensive selection of beer at great prices. Unfortunately, they didn't open until later in the day, and I had places to go in the morning.... :(

Fortunately, I ended up finding a BevMo in Tempe, AZ on my way back to California to see what local brews they had. I picked up the Breckenridge crap there, which is from Colorado. Also picked up two six packs of Nimbus beer from Tucson, AZ.

I was going to visit the Nimbus brewery, but for the same reason as Plaza Liquors, I didn't. Damn time restraints.

Cannot wait to try the two Nimbus six-packs I got. Pale ale and red ale. Skipped on the oatmeal stout and blonde.

edit:  just checked BA and both of the nimbus brews i got have an overall B- rating. oh well.. they gotta be better than this breckenridge ipa

Well I figured I would finally get around to my review of these two beers. I got 6 packs of each through ebay at way too much per bottle but I had never had them and figured I would utilize the 30% cash back a month 1/2 ago. First up:

Black Albert - Royal Stout (Also known as Fat Albert in some places for some reason?)
11.2 oz 13% Alcohol, brewed by De Struise in Belgium

The beer poured a nice black with a few hints of brown. The head was well sized and did last slightly longer then would be expected. The aroma of the beer contained slight coffee/chocolate hints as well as the expected fruitiness found in most Belgium stouts. Also slight licorice/anise and overall no real smell of the alcohol. Taste wise it comes very nearly as it smells with the coffee and fruity flavor being formost. Slight bitterness not found normally (from my experience) on the back of the tongue but overall pretty nice. I do feel the taste could have matured a bit more and plan on aging at least 2 for a year or two.
Overall I give it a 8/10 with negatives being the lack of definite taste (age faster) and the cost. But overall a very nice stout at an impressive 13%.

Next is Westvletern 12

Got this with the same batch as above. It poured out a darker brown/redish (more brown then red but still slight). Very small and quickly gone head so not too much to mention there. Goes down slightly thinker then most beers but very flavorful. Fruits, dates, and some interesting herbal spices I can't come close to naming. Slight malty flavor along with the fruits but pretty much no bitterness (least from this IPA fans point of view).Overall a very nice initial taste and from what I hear it gets beer with age.

9.5/10 -.5 for cost but still drinkable and I am hoping the maturation with age removes that .5

Also I have tried recently the Double Dead Guy and not so recently the 120 Dogfish Head and honestly I felt both required a good amount more maturing as a beer so I wont even write about them until I have another go next year.

DFH60 is the IPA. DFH90 is the IIPA. Isn't the IIPA supposed to be more hoppy? I've only had 3 gulps of this. I can feel a warmth in my legs from the alcohol.

Yeah, I thought the glass issue was petty too. But, my wife agreed with my SIL that it was offensive and tacky that I packed my own glass. I couldn't explain it clear enough for her that I don't want to drink my beer in a plastic cup or in a regular dinner glass.

Yes. If it was a less tradtional beer glass like a tulip, or something liked those geeky Sam Adams glasses, then bringing two of them(so as to share the experience, or at least offer) would of been fine. Everyone who's ever had a bridal shower has received at least one standard glass set, which include at least a couple 16oz tumblers.

mattman688
11-30-2008, 12:43 PM
worst case scenario for next time...ask them for a wine glass to pour your beer in...similar to a tulip, and you can bury your nose in the beer to at least get the aroma when drinking... i did this for my bday tasting party, parents own 30+ wine glasses and 4 pint glasses, well there were 8 of us drinking so we all went with the wine glasses.

Just got done bottling my cider today... had two half batches.. one with brown sugar added and one with normal sugar added to it before fermentation. We tasted a little of each of them... the one with the brown sugar was much more.. alcoholly on the front end, but it was not nearly as much of a punch as it was a week and a half ago. I am guessing that in another few weeks after it is carbed it will end up being pretty tasty. It was already definitely a lot better then it was back a couple weeks ago when I first racked it to the secondary. I am pretty excited about it.. just another few weeks!!! I also helped my buddy bottle his IPA that I helped him make last week. He gave me a 6'er for free for my help, so that should be ready soon too.

my take on the 60 and 90... the 60 is dryer, and i think more hop forward. the 90 is sweeter and more malt forward. i like a half and half of the two, and i feel it's the perfect combo. i get this at the alehouse whenever i go. try it at home. it's delicious.

Normally it is like $7-$7.50 everywhere else around here. Somebody must have caught on :ninja:, because all the bottles on the shelf were re-tagged $6.99 over the $5.20 stickers. I guess I wasn't as slick as should have been.

Did score two big bottles of Skyy for $32 bucks after rebate though, so it wasn't a total loss.

Heh heh, don't know that I would take a pint glass over to a friend's house if they didn't have their own. Beer, sure, but not glassware

And yes, Mav, I put 17lbs worth of beer in my carry-on luggage on my way back from Montana this summer. That put me right at the 50lb mark. They did search my bag to make sure each beer was in a closed container, but other than that there were no issues. I bubble wrapped each bottle/can and made sure my clothes surrounded them. No problems with them breaking or anything.

After each sip, half of it stays on the side of the glass. The lacing on this beer is nuts! wtf! It's a tasty pale ale... I imagine it tastes a lot better on draft. However, I still prefer Sierra Nevada to this... and Stone...

brian i learned a few things to try brewing wise...make a small whirlpool after chilling the wort so all the trub forms a cone in the middle of the pot to pull out the most wort possible.
Also, to take older previous yeast from the fermenter and pour it in before the boil..i think he said it helps the new yeast you pitch after the boil. Have you heard of this?

Had a few glasses of Oceanside Aleworks M.I.A. Imperial Munich. 12.1% abv
http://i38.tinypic.com/30n97hc.jpg

Pours a deep dark brown with a thin light brown head. Fairly thick looking, carbonation is on the lighter side.

Aroma: Sweet, load of malts, some fruitiness, sharp alcohol scent. Lighter hop aroma.

Taste: slightly syrupy, slightly crisp, not too much bitterness up on the front, pretty sweet. Strong toffee flavors and lightly roasted grain. Fruitiness hidden in the background. Alcohol burn at the end of each sip. Light coffee tones at the end as well.

Overall, its a tasty treat but not my favorite. For being somewhat thick and higher abv, its an easy drinker. I mixed this beer with an octoberfest style of beer and it was delicious!

8/10

Just got done bottling my cider today... had two half batches.. one with brown sugar added and one with normal sugar added to it before fermentation. We tasted a little of each of them... the one with the brown sugar was much more.. alcoholly on the front end, but it was not nearly as much of a punch as it was a week and a half ago. I am guessing that in another few weeks after it is carbed it will end up being pretty tasty. It was already definitely a lot better then it was back a couple weeks ago when I first racked it to the secondary. I am pretty excited about it.. just another few weeks!!!
did you kill off the yeast or did you just let it go?

did you kill off the yeast or did you just let it go?

I didn't add any apple concentrate or anything for additoinal flavoring... so I just let it go. I figure for my first trial batch I will just let the yeast do it's thing and see what I end up with. Another couple weeks and I will try one and in about a month I am guessing it will be pretty tasty!

Picked up a bottle of Double Bastard as well just to see what the hype is all about. Sipping on a little Ballastpoint Big Eye right now though.

Had dinner at The Sunset Grill since I was in the area tonight. One of the biggest beer selections in Boston, but somehow it just doesn't make it on my list of top beer bars. I've got a few issues with the place, but beer line up is pretty amazing. 112 taps :omg: Yes I am serious and an equally impressive list of bottles. The place has been around for probably about 30years so it's not really a new spot. It's kind of a college hangout place as are most of the other places in the area. Monday is pretty laid back compared to weekends so it was probably a good night to pop in. Drank some Ruination drafts which were yummy and had some steak tips.

I took this other pic for Mavtech. Not sure if you can tell from the picture, but that is probably the biggest Rouge HBN you will ever see. I think the price tag was like $79, but it's a real beer.

7 gallon is ideal so you can brew all grain without buying another pot...otherwise a 3 gallon pot is perfectly acceptable for extract brewing.

I need a drink tonight.. tried some of a brown that my buddy did about a month and a half ago. He just used a Muntons (sp?) kit that was just the extract basically and added sugar (table sugar) and water to it and let it ferment. The taste was ok.. not anything great at all.. felt kind of unbalanced.. a little alcoholly on the front (maybe it is still too young), but the biggest thing was that it had ridiculous head. I mean like crazy ridiculous amounts. Pouring down the side of the glass the whole time you still could only pour half of the bottle into a normal pint glass because half of the glass was just head?

What did he do wrong.. just overcarbonated?!? Any tips I can give him. I think if I have any more of them from him I will use a big ol' 64 oz fountain drink cup! :)

Went out last night and had the Great Lakes Nosferatu on tap and it smelled great, but tasted very meh. IBU (International Bitterness Units): A scale that expresses the bitterness in a beer. The higher the number, the more bitter the beer. 0-20 = low to mild bitterness, 21-40 = medium to high bitterness, 41 and higher = very bitter. Our IPA is approximately 65 IBU.

:secret: Uno Amber is actually Sam Adams Boston Ale. Very good brew, but the re-branding of it for Uno's is a little deceptive as you can buy it other places including liqour stores.

Not sure on all their beers, but some of the chain does brew their own beer. Might just be a Jersey thing. :yummy:

Wow, sounds fancy!!

Unless of course "200 bottled beers" simply means 200 bottles of Coors Light.

A place that fancy, Coors Light would not cut it. I'm thinking 200 bottles of Bud Select (on the wall ...).

Speaking of fancy, I'm supposed to go to one of most expensive and fancy steakhouses in my city on Fri. The problem is I don't eat steak, so I'll be drinking instead to fill up my belly. I wonder what fancy drinks they'll have. Probably wine.

mav saying hopped up = good :faint:

I was at the bar in my hotel last night here in Boston. Any guesses what the only brand was they had on tap? I had a SA Octoberfest for the first time. I like it. I'll probably drink more tonight.

Going to brew probably Dec 17 at night.... then I leave for Hawaii the next day and come back Jan 2. Will bottle the weekend after Jan 2. If you think this is a terrible idea, let me know.

I have more than enough empty bottles.. I haven't counted, but I know it's 50+.

not a terrible idea...too bad you aren't getting this a week earlier...you could brew, monitor fermentation, then bottle(then you go on vacation) and get back with it ready to drink.

doubt that your fermentation will get stuck, but if it did you would never know it being on vacation... once you get everything boiled and you mix the water with the wort in the fermenter...take out your wine thief and take out a sample big enough to get 85% of your hydrometer tube full...take temperature(make sure its around 70 degrees), and take the hydrometer read...

when you get back from your vacation take another hydrometer read(sanitize your wine thief or anything that dips into the fermenter)...

if you beer started around 1.050-1.060(assuming thats what the pale will be, you are good...if it drops down between 1.009-1.015 when you get back, fermentation went.

Was I the only one that actually finished a bottle of that? That the one that boiled over, right?

Hopefully the smoked porter we brewed has a decent amount of smoke. I have a feeling I should of smoked the grain more aggressively (or smoked more grain).

TELL ME WHAT YOU KNOW!

all i'm gonna say is make sure you have PLENTY of headspace in your fermenter, pitch enough yeast, make sure it's cool, and i would also consider shoving a tube from the hole in the lid into a growler full of sanitized water.

if fermentation really takes off gangbusters, you're going to come home to a BIG mess.

tried to find a pic of a major blowoff i had, but couldn't.

here's this...

http://stlhops.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/03/beer-569_1600x1200.jpg

just imagine all that stuff in the airlock spewing out all over your fermenter.

mattman688
12-04-2008, 02:06 PM
yep...though i doubt with a smaller gravity pale ale with 1 packet of us-05 it will go crazy...but he does get the blowoff setup in the kit he purchased... clive just stick the hose in a milk jug or something with decent volume if you don't own a growler. sanitize it and make sure the end of the tube is submerged under water.

dude i have been watching all these homebrewing videos on youtube...they are all goofy...one guy making a starter, got it up to a boil in a small pot, added the dme, stirred it for a few minutes, then poured it hot into a glass flask over his stove, no funnel, spilled everywhere...then took the flask and put it into an ice bath...

its funny reading the comments people write about there videos...

You and I were the only ones who finished a bottle of that stuff. I don't know what I had at the bottom of that pot, but it burnt up something awful.

Just toss the grain in your smoker next time! What could go wrong?
