My daughter's birthday is 10 days away - the gift bag idea we came up with is to give a CD of my daughter's favorite songs that'll be played at the party.

I was HOPING to find the kind of CDs you can do a cover on? Lightscribe? Because I have that kind of CD burner, though I have never used that function.

t's not essential that they be that kind, if they're radically more expensive or never go on sale...

Buying a pack of CD-Rs is just not the type of thing on my radar screen. I don't know what they usually cost or what brand is good or anything. And I really don't want to just walk into Radio Shack or Target and pay full price.

Is there a sale this week anywhere? Any places to check for clearance packs? Recommended brands?

Thanks so much!

You can get them everywhere usually for an OK price. The problem is like you said, its one of those things like audio cables --- you often find them at some insane price at many places and yet they are also on sale almost every week at a much lower price. The problem with them is that the rebate deep discount deals are gone. In that era roughly from the late 90s to 2005, CDRs were often one of those items featured in those weekly rebates sales so if you were smart you could have gotten them practically for free or 90% off almost every other week.

That era is gone so compared to that , prices even when on sale now seem very mediocre. Also the "good" CDRs were supposedly MIJ Taiyo Yudens which you rarely find nowadays. Its often difficult to say which ones are good since they are all farmed out nowadays to various low cost manufacturers so that a Memorex or TDK can be made from various different producers over the course of a few years.

You can still get Taiyo Yudens from specialty websites like this:
http://www.supermediastore.com/taiyo-yuden-dvd-r-media.html?gclid=CJDVopbJhp0CFQ0aawod7QlybA

Overstock actually carries them too.
http://www.overstock.com/Electronics/Taiyo-Yuden-4.7-GB-TYUDENDVD50-DVD-R-Pack-of-50/3496622/product.html?cid=123620&fp=F&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=11557750

Amazon lists them too.
http://www.amazon.com/Taiyo-Yuden-Silver-Thermal-Lacquer/dp/B00081USSA

Personally during the insane rebate days I bought tons of CD cases for virtually free after rebate and Fujis which were then made by Taiyo Yuden. I still have about 200 of them and 400 CD cases in my closet.

However,Ive used tons of cheaper CDs from TDK, Memorex etc and I dont have problems with them. If you arent archiving data then I dont think its that big a deal, I dont think a CD of music for your kid would be a problem.

The main problem people used to claim was archiving data , keeping it for long periods of time and also when there was a mismatch. In the old days with CD manufacturers using different formulas and CD writer makers constantly optmizing their firmware to get better results sometimes you had incompatibility problems where you would get tons of coasters with certain burners and CDs. I dont think that happens much anymore since CD writers have been old news for a long time. There arent exactly new things happening in that area now. Of course if you run into some horrible batch of CDRs it might happen but I cant remember when Ive had any problems with CDs or DVDs nowdays.

Office Depot often has a weekly sale on some brand of CDRs and Amazon should have some brand on sale.

Around 10-13 bucks for 50 spindle would be low and around 15-22+ average to high for a bargain brand.

Memorex 12 bucks 50.

Verbatim 20-22 bucks

Lightscribe

If you want that type of disk you can get 1o of them for 10 bucks at Amazon.

That's a piss poor price imo. I never pay more than $10 for a 50-pack, and have no problem finding them. I have found a 100-pack for $12 before. It just happens that my local Big Lots stocks these at really good prices nowadays.

OP: How many CDs do you need to burn? You could probably find say a 25 pack for $5 if you look. However, it depends on whether you will spend the time or if you get lucky though.

LightScribe discs are really expensive compared to regular CDs though. I think a 25 pack is like $15 to $20.

If I were looking for CDRs, I would never pay more than 12 and would prefer to pay 10 or lower and though as I mentioned, even that lower end is pretty mediocre compared to the good old days --- thats about as low as I can find them now. Of course I dont live near a Frys, Microcenter or Big Lots. I have seen some super low deals intermittently on generic brands but other than that --- I cant remember seeing a 50 spindle lower than 10 recently.

Its mainly because all the really low end deals were rebate deals which is the only way you get 50-100% off and they phased those out everywhere except for a few items nowadays after everyone kept complaining about them. I was one of those guys that liked them. Sure sometimes they were scams but I got 98% of the ones I applied for and its the only way to get 90-100% off except for a rare Bing Cashback deal.

Where was that at? In the old days Office Max was competing head to head with Compusa every week. Those two places had scanners, printers and tons of accessories anywhere from 50 to 100% off. It got to the point you got really jaded and no way would you actually want to pay more than 0 for CDRs and many other accessories.

You could go every week and walk out with 100 bucks worth of stuff at a net cost of 10-15 bucks. I remember Office Max, the manager there looked really wary , burned out and it was like "Man your battle stations everyone ! The doors are going to open ! "

Omax is a total joke now, completely out of it and retail B&M stores in general have pretty much stopped doing that type of thing unless you live next to a Frys or MC.

Not exactly the best choice. Maxell is as cheap as you can get, and it's shown in their quality.

For a 50-pack, this is a pretty good price:

The only thing is that some people apparently haven't ever used Verbatims correctly....

The obvious situation where you might have problems is if you have a really old CD writer which may not be compatible with the CDRs out now especially if its a generic brand writer that didnt have many firmware upgrades after it was released.

Lightscribe CD-Rs waste of money and time.Use a sharpie pen and write on the Cds. As for blank CDs, try TJMax (they have like spindle of 100 or 50). Ridiculous prices.. I bought myself 100 spindle DVD+R for $7.99.They had 100 spindle CDR for $6.99 and 50pack CDR for $3.99.

Or try walmart online (CB 10% walmart) or bing or wait for black friday. Who knows a cargo container full of CDR for only a $1 (china special :)
