So how about this: you can't rate a thread until you've got a postcount of 50, 100, whatever. I know the rest of you are tired of all the BS thumbs-downing going on.

Or how about requiring users to input a reason when they rate something thumbs down - which can be read... I dunno, somewhere - maybe a link to all the given reasons next to the rating at the top of the thread - or which becomes a post on the thread not counting towards the user's total post count.

Would other users read the reasons?

If people have reasons for liking/disliking threads, they're supposed to put them inside the thread. It would be counterproductive to have people look in two places to read or post comments on a deal.

As has been stated here before, when a thread has a lot of thumbs up or thumbs down, the general trend is usually valid, but up/down counts should be taken with a huge grain of salt.
