Any chance of adding a real time chat feature to the site? I think it would be helpful and entertaining. It might also eliminate some of the chatter and noobness from some threads (my posts included ;) )
Perhaps add an IRC feature like some sites do, or some other type of real time chatting, whatever is easiest. I don't really know about all that stuff but I am sure it isn't that hard.

been suggested before, usually dismissed because its just easier to spam it.

Some trusted Sders could be given op power to enforce rules in the room. And if you have a problem finding ops, or just don't want to bother with it, or there are none in the channel at the time, voice privlidges can be limited to only those who have proved themselves. Make the voice feature only avail to people with a certain amount of posts.
I think it could be a very good addition to the site, if not just to test it out and see how it goes. I know sometimes I have a quick question or two that I want to throw out there and it is just dumb to make a new thread for it, or post in an existing thread. Just something to think about.
I think it would be pretty cool, but it would have to have alot of rooms and mods per room, if you had half the loungers in there it would be too busy.

If you think it will be a problem then there is a simple solution. Have 2 rooms.
1 unmoderated lounge room where any topic can be discussed
1 deal/help related room where rules are strictly enforced
I have been to many IRC chatrooms with a bunch of people asking and answering different questions. I don't think it will be a problem as long as the loungers aren't in there causing trouble.

True... just goes to show that there is a demand for it or it wouldn't keep popping up.... I really don't think any of the arguments made were valid as all the problems could be dealt with easily but oh well, if the powers that be don't think it would be a good idea, would they be opposed to someone else setting it up and hosting it? Would SD be willing to even provide a link to it if it were created? That way those of us who want it can use it, those who don't want it, don't have to participate but at least they will be given the info?
I think an IRC chat would be a good idea, maybe only allow users with x number of posts(10?) or rep to enter, or jut hide it in the lounge, no one sane goes there anyway. Of course if you really want to hide it, put it in the hole known as the podium.

Well I agree with only allowing a certain number of posts to have voice in the chatroom if there are no ops, but it shouldn't be hidden if it is going to be a useful feature. I think the 2 chat rooms, 1 unmoderated lounge and 1 moderated deal/help is the best option. Or just don't have a lounge room since there is already a lounge on here which seems to be a major reason for not having chat at all.

IRC is bad because it is harder to moderate, SD has a system with posts, it keeps records and mods give warning points etc, yes you can kick someone out of the room..... but it doesnt really count for anything.
then people misss out on deals, now if it is just regular chat (such as the lounge) it is a good idea. And seeing how i've been op in many large channels on IRC, I can see how it can be kept under control with the right amount of staff. (There would have to be more ops than just the amount of mods there are on SD)
and I guess a help room would be nice. But one where you post deals is bad because the forum is searchable, and you dont have to be there the second someone posted it.
so there would be like #slickdeals-help andd #slickdeals-chat (or #sd-help and #sd-chat)

Yes I saw that and the person has a valid point. If the channel isn't readily avail to people, how can anyone be in there. If there was a sticky or info posted somewhere prominant, SD real-time chat or something like that, I think you would get a lot more traffic.
As to needing many mods in the room, it only takes 1 op at a time to keep order. I am sure there are enough reliable sders who would take the responsibility.
Anyhow, I don't think an individual effort is enough to prevail. It needs to be endorsed and encouraged by the site in order to work.
Also, this isn't an alternative to posting deals in the threads. This is just something in addition, so that people can get real time information from other members.
I am done grandstanding. SD can do as he wishes, it was just a suggestion that has been made several times in the past and has not yet been tried out by the site oficially. I just thought it would add to the site. I will be here either way.
