Logitech has really good warranties. Have you tried contacting their customer service? Warranties are generally good for 3 years. My G7 started to crap out on me 2 years down the road. I got a replacement right away and didn't even have to send the old one back. I now have two base chargers which works out nicely as I leave one at work and one at home and just take my mouse and dongle back and forth.

i never registered and i really hate teh hassle of boxing the mouse up, shipping it there, they repair it then ship it back in 2 months =p
idk i may look into it, i lost my box tho =p

I doubt you will be able to get a comparable gaming mouse for very cheap. I would think it would be well worth your time to contact their support. They may even send you a replacement without you having to send in your current one as your problem is a known issue.
As I do not know your model number and info there is a limit to how much help I can give, but try here for starters.
For starters check out this page (LINKY (http://logitech-en-amr.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/logitech_en_amr.cfg/php/enduser/popup_adp.php?p_sid=hL4nUFLj&p_lva=&p_li=&p_faqid=9984&p_created=1233700784&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX 3Jvd19jbnQ9MjQsMjQmcF9wcm9kcz04NDQsODQ2LDgyMCZwX2N hdHM9JnBfcHY9My44MjAmcF9jdj0mcF9wYWdlPTEmcF9zZWFyY 2hfdGV4dD1HNSBMYXNlciBNb3VzZQ**)) and try their suggested fixes.
If that doesn't help then.
1) Locate your G5 Mouse M/N, P/N and PID (LINKY (http://i33.tinypic.com/rll6jc.jpg))
2) Enter that information into this page and request their support. Mention you tried their suggestions and that the problem still persists. (LINKY (http://logitech-en-amr.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/logitech_en_amr.cfg/php/enduser/ask.php?))
BTW, do you have any documentation from when you purchased it such as receipt, invoice, etc? You may not need, but they will most likely ask what retailer you purchased it from and at least an estimated purchase date.
