flat panel tv recommendations for my niece

Buying a flat panel for my niece, who's moving into her first apartment!

What's the best bang for the buck - size and brand taken into consideration. My price range is up to $700 shipped.

Eg. i would rather buy a 42" panny plasma for $550 than a 50" Proscan LCD for $450'

Would prefer to stick to sony, samsung, panasonic, maybe toshiba/LG if the price is compelling!
