I need to buy my 5 years old niece a present for her birthday & would appretiate suggestions on the latest, innovative toys or games for this age..
TIA
You can get an American Girl for $100. Anything dress-up or pretend (food/grocery cart/makeup/etc) is good too.

stick $50 in a 529 and buy her a toy with the rest... a present for now and a present for the future.

Personally I would love doing that...but the hug I'll get from her will not be tight enough...:)
Sorry, didn't read the toy part of the reply.... That is a great thing to do. so...noe I am looking for a toy that would cost me $50.
Thanks bzhayes.

Thanks jh75, I am looking at pretend play toys....but looks like they don't have something new as she already has the kitchen & the baby doll that I like.
Still looking.....

repped for not dismissing this idea. At 5 kids are as likely to get as much enjoyment out of a $10 toy as they are out of a $100 toy. A small investment now in a 529 could really help her when she goes to college in 13 years... and knowledge of the money will get her thinking about college and finances along the way.
You do not need to open the 529 in the state you are in. If you have any questions about 529's let me know, I did some research and opened one for my nephew a couple months back.

at Costco they had this dress up trunk with 3 outfits in it, it was so adorable & I Think it was less than $50. might want to check Costco if you or a friend has a membership.

Check out this Amazon link. It's games for 5-7 yo girls with four star+ ratings. You can narrow it down further by clicking the department links on the left side of the screen and adjust the price range below the department links.

Thank you all for the suggestions.
I am looking at the Amazon toy section & am planning to make a trip to Target which is my fav store. Costco was an adorable idea but.... is quite far from my place & none of my friends have the membership. we are the Sams club people. :(
Also, found this webiste which lists the award winnig toys...

alright, i have two 5 year olds, who have possible every toy imaginable, but most of their play time is with that dress up trunk one lady mentioned. i can't recommend it enough. the outfits are cheaply made, but my kids think those outfits are the best thing ever. sams club carries that trunk, i believe i saw it just a few weeks ago for 34 bucks there. with it, you need to get the shoes, they come in another trunk (open trunk) and they run about 19.99 at sams club (i think the trunk has about 6 pairs of those shoes). so you'll spend just a few bucks more than 50 dollars but she will go nuts for you.
as for educational toys, leapfrog is the best. I don't know if you know what she all has, but leapster is awesome as so is tag reader. now, the downside is the books for tag and the games for leapster are pretty expensive so her mama will end up buying from time to time as kids get bored with just one game. your call. hope this helps a bit
