You must be having a DSL modem. Just buy a good wireless router
You can get a refurb one here

If connecting a laptop to the router is it more beneficial to get a router with an antenna? Are there internal and external antenna's? If so , which is best? TIA

Just got a laptop and haven't hooked it up yet. Friends have told me "BE SURE" and get a router with an antenna for going room to room or outside the house. Was just curious as to the variations of that.

both the routers there have decent ranges. I use a one without any external antenna and the coverage is decent around the house

Do note range is more a function of wireless specification rather than the router itself. Wireles G network will be good for a one bedroom apartment. Anything larger and you will have to use N routers.
Note you could crank up the power of a router for it's signal to go for miles but your laptop wont be able to talk back to the router.
These days internal antenas work as well as external ones - remember the signal has to go through walls if you are far away a little peice of plastic covering it wont matter much.
What is bad for wifi is concrete and metal - so you better not have concrete walls and hopefully there is no metal structure in the way of the signal.

I'm thinking an inexpensive N router with good range should do the trick. I certainly want to be able to go from room to room.

I would just pick up the Linksys WRT400N in that case - it has dual band reciever which is helpful if you have too many wireless stuff like cordless phones and other things (microwave included)
Amazon has it for $114 which is a pretty good deal: http://www.amazon.com/Linksys-WRT400N-Dual-Band-Wireless-N-Router/dp/B001SEL36M/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1257185549&sr=8-1
