TEDTalks are from an annual conference that takes place in Monterey which focuses on technology, the environment, education, and the way we interact with the world. They invite people at the top of their field to give speeches and share their knowledge, and while most of the lectures are meant to inform, some of them are meant simply to entertain. If you havent checked it out, I have included some of what I think are the best performances, and feel confident in saying they they are well worth watching.

The paradox of choice - Barry Schwartz on the paradox of choice
[apple.com]
===========

Trying not to get too political here - but this guy justifies socialism (income redistribution) by saying that poor people have too few choices and rich people have too many, thereby making their lives unoptimized; that is, there is some ideal number of "choices" (in a qualitative sense) which would make everyone's lives "optimal". The rationale is that too few choices makes everyone fit into the same (or one of only a few) molds whereas too many choices leads to people unable to make decisions for fear of not making the correct decision (e.g. "paralysis"). IOW, ignorance is bliss.

Anyone buy that?

He does not use the term "socialism" however he speaks of income redistribution by forceful and immediate means.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socialism

"The post-war social democratic governments introduced social reform and wealth redistribution via state welfare and taxation. "

he says that socialism in the sense of redistributing funds to make sure options are available to everyone is something we should work for because having too many choices especially for people not qualified to answer them results in stagnation and hurts everyone.
