View Full Version : Rep Points

I think they shoud give you a rep point for every 5 or 10 valid repost you report through modalert. That way people will use the modalert instead of replying with 'repost'.

...fill up the mods' mailboxes with many many reports of reposts...

...plus turn the forum into a sort of "police state," with rep-hungry members looking to fatten their reputation by mod alerting everything in the hopes of having some complaints count...

instead you should rep mods for every 5 to 10 "modalerts" you do

I warn people who reply with repost without alerting it. It's easier that way.

...fill up the mods' mailboxes with many many reports of reposts...

...plus turn the forum into a sort of "police state," with rep-hungry members looking to fatten their reputation by mod alerting everything in the hopes of having some complaints count...The difficulties may be diffused if: Each thread is allowed to get at most 1 ModAlert (i.e., the ModAlert button disabled after the thread has received a ModAlert).
With a few INCORRECT ModAlert's, one gets a nerp (the # may perhaps be the same as the # of CORRECT ModAlert's before one gets a rep).

bigbrother

What if we give nerp to those who gets reported for reposts all the time. Say if the last 5 threads you started has been deleted because its a repost, you get a nerp.

how do you get nerps? can only mods give them? I never really understood that but i keep getting rep points and not getting my rep # going up..is that cuz the reppers are too new or something?

I mentioned this before

On a side note, I suggest that for every ten (or whatever number) ModAlerts for reposts and/or other bad posts and these ModAlerts are actually correct and accurate perhaps one should get a rep point(s) from the Mods. Exposing a repost or other bad post is like finding a deal-- it takes time, ergo there should be some reward besides a clutter free forum. And abusing the ModAlert should be cause for reprimand in the form of a warning point. Just a thought from this Novice.

I see the point about ModAlerts being abused, but that is why a Mod would also give warning points when the Alert is abused.

And about the Mods getting rep points, that is a fair statement, but do Mods really need Rep points? They have the ability to Nerp, close and delete threads, and other capabilities which I am unaware of. Rep points seem moot for Mods IMHO.

A side question for the Mods: How come when I do repost, 99% of the Mods never comment on the status? I have about 23 successful Modalerts and the only Mod to comment is Lowpro. I am actually curious what happens to the post when I ModAlert it and I have to play detective to figure out whether it was deleted, moved, et cetera. If the Mods are busy or don't want to comment (which is understandable), then why have the comment slot anyway?

People with 100+ rep points or mods can give nerps, usually these users are denoted by their bolded usernames such as mine :)

I guess I have bad luck.

I am aware of this feature and do use it, but sometimes it does not help. Anyway, my initial question was why have the comment slot if it is not going to be used, but I guess I am just an anomaly.

Thank you both for your insights and suggestions

...Anyway, my initial question was why have the comment slot if it is not going to be used, but I guess I am just an anomaly... I agree that it would be helpful if mods would comment, which would let the conscientious among us know if the type of alert we submit is accurate or otherwise useful.

However, I understand them not responding. These unpaid volunteers may have to deal with many mod alerts on a single post, so it would be a waste of time to respond to each alert. Or, they may just be busy.

I figure if the alerted post gets deleted, my alert was probably close to the mark. If the post gets edited ("[personal attack removed]"), that's helpful too. If nothing happens to the post, I figure I'm off the mark somehow. Different mods have different standards, too.

its just easier when going through a long list of mod alerts to just close them than start typing.

i don't find a simple "merged" worth the time, i comment only when there's something wrong.

mods (well at least me) don't need rep pts for closing mod alerts. AFAIK the people who scream repost with no link are getting few and far between. IMO the system works as is...

i agree with kel be... it'd probably just be easier to warn people who just say repost with nothing else than open up something like rep pt rewards that are more likely to be abused.

I guess I was just curious and you have answered it. I understand what a pain in the a$$ it is to go through the list and type individual comments for every single Alert. Thank you for your answer.

How do you become a moderator, because I would rather move the threads myself if I could rather than use the modalert.Imagine the load placed on the servers if users could move threads. There are over 80,000 members. If only a fraction of them started using the features that appeal to advanced users, SD would have to double the size of his server farm.

Your mod alerts, and everyone elses, do not bother me. That's like being a doctor and hating patients. Catch my drift?

Sorry to be OT, but sometimes I wonder if the site filter should be set to automatically replace the words "rep points" with something like "slickdeals" or "celery."

thanks! No stalking allowed unless you have been a member for 3 years. 1 or 2 celery do not constitute a full "stalk". Most probably only Mr. Skickdeals himself could award as many as 3 STALKS :D

WOT are you talking about with the celery? Each celery have at least 4 stalks. :P

Anyway, to correct you, Mr. SD is not the only one who can award 3 rep points at one click. It depends on how long you've been a member. I know for a fact that a few people, besides Mr. SD can rep 3 pts (i.e. Xnarg, Arjunsr, lowpro). Even my reps are worth 2.
