View Full Version : Oldest eBay account?

I figure people with eBay accounts are rare around here... but perhaps a couple SD'ers have one :D. I just noticed that my account is almost 13 years old ( Sept' 12, 1997, craftyhack is my tag: http://feedback.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewFeedback2&userid=craftyhack&ftab=AllFeedback ). For no reason other than curiosity I Googled to see what the oldest one was, and didn't have any hits... so figured I would post here.

BTW, as you can see Iin my feedback I don't really use SD or eBay for flipping if anyone chooses to flame(well maybe once or twice :D), nor do I give a damn if any other SD'er flips... we live in a free market... make your living how you can, doesn't mean anything to me :shake:... I really am just curious what the oldest one out there is... eBay was founded in 1995... anyone with a birth year account?

My uncle's used eBay for a god awful amount of time.

My dad's been on eBay since January 09- we got the "1 year anniversary" email about a month ago.

Me? A few months. At least since October 09, but probably more like August 09.

Well, back when you joined, eBay wasn't expecting you to last a year I'm sure :P.

You can merge the two accounts if you want into one. That way you'd have all your feedback under the name you want. At least you used to be able to do that.

8 years. I wasn't old enough before then.

But I was a platinum powerseller for a decent chunk of that. That's gotta count for something. Stopped cold when they changed the rules to screw sellers a year or two ago.

September 3, 1995 You're the one who bought the broken laser pointer, aren't you.

Sometime before September, 1995, 28-year-old software developer Pierre Omidyar, who had previously worked with Claris developing software for Apple computers, sat down to write the code that would eventually evolve into what we know as eBay today.

Originally called AuctionWeb and hosted on the same server as Pierre's page about the ebola virus, the site began with the listing of a single broken laser pointer. Though Pierre had intended the listing to be a test more than a serious offer to sell at auction, he was shocked when the item sold for $14.83. Pierre knew that he'd created something big as soon as he contacted the winning bidder to ask if he understood that the pointer was broken.

"I'm a collector of broken laser pointers," came the reply.

It was probably also the first eBay scam.

Step 1: Buy broken laser pointer on eBay
Step 2: Buy new laser pointer at Worst Buy (sorry, I keep trying to type the first B but my brain won't let me)
Step 3: Return broken laser pointer in box to Worst Buy for an exchange
Step 4: ???
Step 5: Profit!

I've got a couple.

One of them was created in June of '96, but I stopped using that one years ago (forgot why).

The other one that I still use (but haven't for the past couple of years) was only created 5 years ago in '05.

I may have found one of the oldest ebay accounts if not the oldest. The user name is simply the letter "a" and according to ebay the account was registered on Dec-31-89. The account is no longer registered.

Or maybe the guy just knew how to fix broken laser pointers. Why is broken laser pointer guy getting raked across the coals here? Hell, I buy cell phones with broken screens all the time on ebay, because it's easy to fix them and flip them for a profit.

is there a way in either ebay or paypal to get the total # of transactions you have with an account since day 1? figure it's probably 10x that since that's about the rate of feedback received over the years...
