FAQ section (vers. 2012.05.16):

Q. Do you have to recycle or make a qualified purchase first?

A. Either.

Q. Do you have to recycle and make a qualified purchase quarterly for Office Depot's Rewards program?

A. Yes. Neither unreleased recycling nor qualified purchases carryover from quarter to quarter. A quarter's recycling rewards are only paid out to the extent of that quarter's qualified purchases:

--- Recycle 30 carts and have $100 in qualified purchases in a quarter = $60 in recycling rewards paid out with $0 in qualified purchases carried over to the next quarter.

--- Recycle 30 carts and have $55 in qualified purchase in the third quarter = $55 in recycling rewards paid out. The remaining $5 in recycling rewards is unreleased and is zeroed out at quarter's end.

Q. Do you have to recycle and make a qualified purchase monthly for OfficeMax's Business Rewards program?

A. No. Recycling rewards are only paid out (in $2 increments) to extent of qualified purchases. Here is an example based on OfficeMax's program:

January: recycle 10 carts, make $0.00 in qualified purchases. No payout for January (in February). Recycling of 10 carts carried over to February.

February: recycle 10 carts, make $32 in qualified purchases. Payout of $32 for February (in March). Recycling of 4 carts carried over to March.

March: recycle 0 carts, make $42 in qualified purchases. Payout of $8 for March (in April). Qualified purchases of $34 carried over to April.

April: recycle 10 carts, make $0.00 in qualified purchases. Payout of $20 for April (in May). Qualified purchases of $14 carried over to May.

May - November: no transactions. Qualified purchases of $14 carried over to December.

December: recycle 10 carts, make $4 in qualified purchases. Payout of $18 for December (in January). Recycling of 1 cart lost at calendar year end.

Q. Where can I get used ink/toner cartridges?

A. Family and friends, neighbors, thift shops, garage/rummage sales, and of course like everything else, eBay.

Q. If I purchase an item with rewards will that purchase count my annual purchase requirement for recycling? (OD and OM only)

A. No, to the extent the purchase was paid for with rewards it will not count as a qualifying purchase for the purpose of the recycling purchase requirement.

Q. If I purchase an item with rewards will I earn the standard purchase rewards (e.g. Staples 10% back on ink or paper purchases)?

A. No, items purchased with rewards do not qualify as qualifying purchases for the purpose of earning standard purchase rewards.

Q. If I purchase an item that earns a bonus/special reward (100% back in rewards if item X is purchased, $Y back if item Z is purchased) and I purchase that item with rewards, will I receive the bonus/special reward?

A. It depends.

Office Depot: No, to the extend paid for with rewards (or coupons for that matter).

OfficeMax: So far yes with one exception. Paying for 100% back in rewards and fixed value (buy X, get $Y in rewards) bonus rewards offers with rewards have earned bonus rewards so at least for those two types of bonus rewards offers, MaxPerks rewards have "rolled".

The one bonus rewards offer that did not roll was its June 2010 "Get 20% Back in MaxPerks Rewards" offer and the offer's terms noted the exception:

"*20% MaxPerks Bonus Rewards offer valid in-store from June 20, 2010 thru June 26, 2010. Saving pass, phone promo code or online promo code and member's MaxPerks ID card must be presented at time of purchase. No Bonus Reward adjustments will be made after purchase. Not valid on computers, gift cards, general use prepaid cards, phone cards, purchases with a Retail ConnectSM card, sales tax, OfficeMax private label ink, toner and ink refills, Sprint® monthly price plans and purchases made prior to enrollment and purchases with a MaxPerks Reward Card."

Staples: It depends on the type of bonus rewards offer:

--- percentage back in rewards offer: No, to the extent paid for with rewards (or coupons for that matter). Example: if the bonus reward is 100% back on the purchase of batteries, and $15 of the $20 purchase price is paid for with rewards, the bonus reward payout would be $5 ($20-$15).

--- fixed value back in rewards offer: Yes. Example: if the bonus reward is $39.99 for purchasing a case of paper, then it does not matter how much of the purchase price is paid for with rewards (or coupons for that matter). The bonus rewards payout will be $39.99.

--- buy at least $X of a certain item, get some bonus reward offer:
------ if the bonus reward is purchase at least $40 in case paper and receive $25 in bonus rewards, and the total paper purchase is $50 of which $20 is paid with rewards, no bonus reward would be earned because only $30 ($50-$20) of the paper purchase would be counted towards the $40 minimum.
------ if the bonus rewards offer is purchase at least $50 in HP ink, receive an additional $3 per cart (total of $5 per cart) for recycling and the total HP ink purchase is $85 of which $25 is paid for with a coupon and $20 is paid for with rewards, no bonus rewards would be earned because only $45 ($80 - $25 - $20) of the HP ink purchase would be counted towards the $50 minimum.

Just came back from my OM today and was told they could only take 1 rewards card per transaction now, even if it's from the same account. Going to print out the terms and conditions and show them to see what they say.

So if i were to start the Office Depot one clean (none recycled, no purchases), should I make a purchase the first month too?

If recycling $x value of carts, you will need at least $x in qualified purchases to receive a payout.

Not sure what you are asking.

Basically, how do I start taking advantage of this program?
Since we only earn as much as we spend should I start buying for the quarter I start recycling?

I do Staples ink recycling, but am not too sure about OD.

I do Staples ink recycling, but am not too sure about OD.To earn recycling rewards, you need to both recycle and make qualifying purchases.

So, if you only do one or the other this quarter, there will be no payout this quarter. Both recycling and qualified purchases carryover from quarter to quarter until calendar year end when they cease to carryover.

So, to the extent you recycle and then to the extent of your qualifying purchases, you will receive a rewards payout.

Please see the first question in the FAQ at the bottom of the OP.

Oh the first question in the FAQ confused me because I saw quarters were 0 ink cartridges were recycled. I think I get it now.

So in essence...,
If I recycled 60 cartridges/quarter for every quarter and for each quarter, and I spend at least $180, I'll be getting $180 in rewards card every quarter for a total of $720 rewarded by the end of the year?

Over the course of a year, you would need (3x20)x4 in carts recycled and $180x4 in qualified spending to max out.

As to the zero carts recycled in the 3rd quarter, it was just to show how the carryover process worked with regards to recycling and qualified purchases. If you wanted, you could recycle 20 carts each month during the year and then make a large purchase ($720+) in Nov. on Black Friday and then you would receive a fourth quarter recycling rewards payout of $720 near the end of Feb. of the next year.

GREAT explanation. I didn't realize that the inks would carry over that way. Which means I could have been recycling my max and getting paid out whenever I made purchases.

I've been scavenging the internets for information about these kind of ink rewards. OP you are the best. Thanks. Anyhow, a couple of quick questions for a Staples Standard Ink Rewards Member like me:

1. Could I use other's rewards points along with mine stacked together for a one time purchase?

2. Given that I am a Standard Ink Member, I am limited with the expiration. This means that I need to use my Rewards within that time frame otherwise I'll lose it forever. Is there anyway or a loophole to go around that expiration? ..... through a gift card maybe? Is it possible to purchase Staples Gift Cards using the Ink Rewards? Do Staples Gift Cards expire?

3. Stacking for one purchase: My Rewards + Gift Cards (note the s) + Staple's Ad Discount on their circular + ejunkie Coupon = possible for one transaction online or instore?

4. For those experienced with these types of Ink Rewards Programs from all 3 stores, which do you think has got the best Ink Recycling Program?

Thanks.

2. May be nice to add this info to originalpost too. How do the returns purchased with rewards work? Do you loose the rewards money if you return?

I've been scavenging the internets for information about these kind of ink rewards. OP you are the best. Thanks. Anyhow, a couple of quick questions for a Staples Standard Ink Rewards Member like me:

1. Could I use other's rewards points along with mine stacked together for a one time purchase?I have no personal experience doing this.

OD's T&C states the rewards cards are not "transferable or assignable" but I have never read of anyone's account being merged/terminated for this reason. For an in-store purchase, the rewards cards have no personal identifier but a cashier might question why one person has two rewards cards with the same expiration date. Online OD accepts multiple gift/rewards cards as payment.

OM's T&C state rewards must be from the same account but I have never read of anyone's account being merged/terminated for that reason. In-store the cashier could question why rewards from two different accounts are being used. Online OM only accepts one rewards payment per transaction.

I have read that Staples may merge accounts when rewards checks from two separate rewards accounts are used on the same purchase and I have read that others have done it without any issues. I lean toward the conservative side.

Do Staples Gift Cards expire?According to the T&Cs, it is not possible to purchase Staples Gift cards with Staples Rewards.

Not that it matters for this conversation, but Staples Gift cards do not expire.

3. Stacking for one purchase: My Rewards + Gift Cards (note the s) + Staple's Ad Discount on their circular + ejunkie Coupon = possible for one transaction online or instore?By ad discount, do you mean sale price or coupon?

ejunkie coupons are YMMV in-store. For example, the Staples stores near me no longer accept the $20 off $50 coupons at all and validate any Staples coupon.

In-store it should be OK to use rewards + gift cards (not sure of the transaction limit) + sales price + legitimate coupon (one dollar off coupon per transaction and the rewards should not be considered a dollar off coupon for this purpose) but I have had to argue with individual cashiers about using both a coupon and a reward check on the same transaction. Since the register will allow it, I present the case if the register allows it, it should be OK.

Online rewards + coupon (again, one dollar off coupon per transaction, rewards not counted as a dollar off coupon) + sales price is OK (again, not sure of the transaction limit) but it is my understanding that gift cards are not usable online. If the purchase total is sufficient, both a dollar off and freebie coupon can be used on the same transaction (purchase total must meet or exceed coupon limits added together: $25 off $100 + free X with $150 purchase = purchase of $250 or more (shipping and taxes excluded)).

4. For those experienced with these types of Ink Rewards Programs from all 3 stores, which do you think has got the best Ink Recycling Program? If doing just one, probably Staples although Staples lack of FAR items recently has been a problem for some.

1. Do any of these 3 stores allow more than one rewards account from the same address? One for wife and one for husband? Any work arounds for it if they do not allow?OD's T&C limit one per address.

OM's T&C are silent on the matter so it should be OK.

Staples' T&C limit one per address.

I have read about multiple accounts at the same address for OD and Staples without issue and I have also read of Staples merging some of those accounts.

2. May be nice to add this info to originalpost too. How do the returns purchased with rewards work? Do you loose the rewards money if you return? Thanks for the suggestion.

hopefully some of this is helpful

1. Could I use other's rewards points along with mine stacked together for a one time purchase?for Staples: It's been done, but sometimes (often?) the accounts will be merged, so if you have a premier account, I wouldn't try this. If you have some misc accts and don't mind their getting merged, then you can try it, as it has worked in the past. The awards have the acct number embedded in them, so If a cashier felt like it, they could check and deny. I don't know if Staples' computers do check for this, but I'm sure they could.

Do Staples Gift Cards expire?Haven't seen a loophole -- I suppose you could return w/o receipt if you want to go that route. They keep track of this though -- with your license. You get a limited #s of returns I don't know if it resets. If you get your spending, then you get a longer expiration date w/premier. But they still expire.

3. Stacking for one purchase: My Rewards + Gift Cards (note the s) + Staple's Ad Discount on their circular + ejunkie Coupon = possible for one transaction online or instore?I've stacked some combo of the above in the past, but I think they are more restrictive now. Last time something, I'm not sure what, didn't work as planned/hoped. Didn't want any discussion and got a decent price, so I just purchased the stuff.

.

2. May be nice to add this info to originalpost too. How do the returns purchased with rewards work? Do you loose the rewards money if you return?OM has given me 'GC', not really GC but basically the equivalent as far as I can tell -- ie no expiry. I think you basically lose w/Staples, unless you return before the original certificate expired, in which case you get a cert w/the original expiry date.

1. You can use rewards from multiple accounts for a transaction, but you probably don't want to. The register will accept them, but as a previous poster already stated, the rewards certificates are tied to the individual member's rewards accounts, and they may (or may not) catch it and merge the accounts.

2. You can't buy gift cards with rewards; yes, you need to use them by the expiration or lose them.

3. You can use your rewards, multiple gift cards, one dollar-off coupon (ie, 25 off 75), and instant savings advertised on a single transaction.

4. I think OfficeMax is best, simply because you can buy gift cards (except OfficeMax gift cards) with the rewards. So I can use my rewards to buy Amex or Visa gift cards to purchase whatever I want at any store, or buy ebay gift cards to buy stuff on eBay. Staples and OD require you to buy merchandise at the store.

1. All three basically state the same thing - one account per person...While I do not whether this is enforced, both OD and Staples have a one account per address restriction as well.

OD: "Limit one Worklife Reward account per business/household"

Staples: "Staples Rewards accounts are limited to one account per eligible customer; each mailing address is also limited to one account."

i am only familiar with staples returns. if you use rewards and return then you get a coupon printed at bottom of your receipt for the amount of your rewards coupon with the same expiration date as the original. PROVISO i have only done this once and i have not tried to do a return a second time

I have 4 "family accounts" at each of Staples, OD, OM. Different addresses and names. I manage all accounts which means i am the only one to go in the store and recycle the carts and redeem the rewards. No problems so far except at om where a manager threatended me-i will not go to that store anymore. I have combined rewards from diff accounts with coupons bought online at staples using them instore without any problems(i have heard that combining rewards online is a no-no but insore OK-can anyone rebut this?).
Basically keep a low profile whenever possible, be nice to the cashiers and managers, and do not do all your biz in 1 day, at the same store, do as much online as possible to avoid scrutiny, is my advice.

Can we pay with rewards for other reward generating items and still get rewards?
For example, if I use $30 ink reward coupon from staples to pay for the battery deal or paper deal where you get some rewards back, do I still get the rewards back or would it reduce the rewards.
What about the same in OfficeMax and Office Depot.

What about the same in OfficeMax and Office Depot.OD: purchases with rewards do not count as qualifying purchases//not sure whether items with bonus rewards purchased with rewards earn rewards

OM: purchases with rewards do not count as qualifying purchases//to date, items with bonus rewards purchased with rewards DO earn those bonus rewards

Staples: purchase with rewards do not count as qualifying purchases//since the battery/paper deals recently, items with bonus rewards purchased with rewards DO NOT earn those bonus rewards to the extent purchased with rewards (and with coupons for that matter).

Here are the adds to the FAQ:

Q. If I purchase an item with rewards, will I earn the standard purchase rewards (e.g. Staples 10% back on ink or paper purchases)?

No. Items purchased with rewards do not qualify as qualifying purchases for the purpose of earning standard purchase rewards.

Q. If I purchase an item that earns a bonus/special reward (100% back in rewards if item x is purchased, $25 back if item y is purchased) and I purchase that item with rewards, will I receive the bonus/special reward?

It depends.

Office Depot: not sure

OfficeMax: to date, yes, items that earn bonus/special rewards purchased with rewards do earn those bonus/special rewards.

Staples:

-- No -- to the extent purchased with rewards (or coupons for that matter). This is a recent change as detailed in the Duracell and paper reward deals recently.

-- Example A: if the reward is 100% back on the purchase of batteries, and $15 of the $20 purchase price is paid with rewards, the bonus/special reward payout would be $5 ($20-$15).
-- Example B: if the reward is purchase at least $40 in paper and receive $25 in bonus/special rewards, and the total paper purchase is $50 of which $20 is paid with rewards, no bonus/special reward would be earned because only $30 ($50-$20) of the paper purchase would be counted towards the $40 minimum.

And you asked the cashier to ask a manager about the terms of the program? Did you try recycling in April? What happened then?

Three things to try if your stores enforce a 5 per day limit:

1. Have the manager print out and read the terms of the program. At the very bottom of the terms and conditions there is an asterisk. You might bring a copy to show them with the relevant bits highlighted :

"Worklife Rewards® Members will receive $3 back in Recycling Rewards for each cartridge recycled in-store, up to 20 per month. We can recycle additional cartridges but Recycling Rewards will only be issued for 20 per month*. ...

*Limit of 5 cartridges per day ended March 31, 2010."

2. Ask them to ring up the 20 carts (or 15 carts on Monday). If the limit is 5 per day, the rewards system will only count the first 5 anyway.

3. Go to 3 different stores on Monday if available. Then contact OD corporate and ask them what is going on at your stores.

I have heard from other posters that some individual OM stores are enforcing a 5 per day limit but you are the first that I recall noting OD stores enforcing a 5 per day limit at least now at the end of the 2nd month since the change in terms.

A cashier at 1 of the 2 stores i use, at beginning of change of terms, a couple months ago, tried to tell me you could only do 5 at a time, then i went back to the same store a month later and they allowed the 20. I guess its usually best to keep a low profile, so i generally do not argue with an employee, just go to another store.

Does Office Max have frequent FAR deals? If not, it's pretty difficult to buy what you want to earn.OM has very few Free After Rebate (FAR) deals but they have been having Free After Rewards (FARewards) deals every other month this year so far (enough that I have been able to max out my account ($720(12x60)) for recycling purposes). Who knows if they will continue.

But you still are kind of paying "half price" for the stuff you bought is that right?
Or how do you spend your rewards when you get them back? Does OM work like staples (in the past) where you can be rewarded with a reward purchase?

Unfortunately paying for a purchase with rewards does not create a qualified purchase. So if you roll the same $200 over and over, you would still have only $200 in qualified spending (original $200 was out of pocket and yes, I know most will have friction from sales tax, but it's just an example).

I am fortunate that some of my local stores still follow the terms and conditions on using rewards to the letter.

For Office Depot, are the reward gift cards linked to your rewards number?
And will the purchases made with regular OD gift cards count towards purchases to redeem rewards?

bpvh
06-03-2010, 07:59 PM
For Office Depot, are the reward gift cards linked to your rewards number?Yes -- if you pay with your rewards payout card and do not use your rewards ID card, the purchase will still show up in your rewards account (as a purchase, not as a qualified purchase).

While using rewards payout cards from more than one account on a transaction is against the program's t&c, OD apparently does nothing if such an occurrence happens.

And will the purchases made with regular OD gift cards count towards purchases to redeem rewards?Yes, purchases with regular OD gift cards count as qualified purchases for both purchase rewards (1%, 10%, etc) and recycling rewards (toward the annual purchase requirement).

they must get a kick out of saying "no" to 20 cartridges or something. Out of 3 OD I have nearby, the manager at one location keeps insisting that they've ALWAYS had 5 per day recycling limit and the new change is that the maximum per month is 20, and 5/day still enforced. It didn't matter what the TOC said. I kept explaining that 5 per day was the old term and new term only mentioned 20/month, but not daily limit, but he won't budge.

So I called the OD reward dept, asked if they could talk to the manager about the real TOC, the manager refused to talk to them on the phone on the grounds that they do not know who they are talking to. I asked him if he could call the OD reward dept now and he refuses to and says "I will get in contact with my own supervisor and let you know" He took my phone number down, but never ever called me, not that I expected getting one. What kind of an a$$ am I dealing with here? I hate these super-hero managers enforcing their own "little" rules.

I am glad that I will soon be freed from recycling cartridges from all 3 stores and that I won't see those idiots' faces anymore.

Of the 4 stores I can go to, only one location lets me do 20 all at once. In fact, the employees at that store always remind me I can bring in more when I have less than 20. I just go to that one mostly now.

Thanks again. So, is there any chance of "overlap" to combine two rewards? If the July-Sep will be delivered around the end of November, there should be only few days of overlap, correct? Here is the my last, naive OD rewards question: Can we use more than one rewards check for online purchases (or is it similar to OM, where you can only use 1 online, but can combine up to 3 over the phone)?

I am not sure if OD has a limit on rewards cards specifically for online purchases as I have never used more than one on an order ... but rewards cards are entered online in the same functional box as gift cards and I have used a rewards card and several gift cards on one order without a problem. If there is a limit, it probably applies to rewards and gift cards equally.

A question that I have not seen addressed:

Do these programs at Staples, OD, and OM count a month as the first through the last calendar day of that month, or is it a 30 day period after you turn in cartridges?

e.g., Can I turn in 20 cartridges on the last day of a month and then 20 more the next day, on the first of the next month, and be credited for all 40? (Assuming premier for Staples and the regular for OD and OM.)

Thanks in advance for an answer.

recycling rewards will not exceed the amount of your total qualifying annual Office Depot purchases
qualifying purchases for the purpose of recycling exclude taxes; shipping; postage stamps; and prepaid gift, debit, phone, or services cards; and purchases made with Office Depot Merchandise and Reward Cards
recycling and purchases carry over from quarter to quarter - expire at calendar year end

I'm not too familiar with OD's rewards program so I can use some clarification on the first bullet here. I wonder how the program defines "annual purchases". Does it mean your total purchases made on previous calendar year, or your cumulative purchases made in the past 12 months prior to the month you send your cartridges in, or the total purchases you made so far (right before you hand in the cartridges) within current calendar year?

Also, can we use the rewards to buy stamps? I know we can't do that with Staples rewards, which sucks.

Both purchases and recycling carry over from quarter to quarter and then expire at calendar year end.

I have used rewards INSTORE like crazy, 2 checks from diff accounts, and a 3rd acct as the one getting credit for the purchase, and using a 20 off 50 coupon and no problem. I don't know about online, i have heard they watch these transactions more carefully.

Now my question. Has anyone noticed a change in the way that rewards are allowed INSTORE within the last week or so? The manager of my staples is now requiring everytone to show their ID when using a rewards certificate, and the name must match the one on the certificate. I think this has something to do with the reduced $2 payout and recognition that many of us have multiple staples accounts, or that we are managing family accounts.
This about kills Staples rewards for me. Who cares about the trouble when you can only make $40 a month for 1 Premier account...

The backpack purchase will qualify you for the bonus rewards on the backpack and will add to the annual purchase require for ink/toner recycling.

anyways, i think this has to do more with a general feelings at staples that coupon fraud is rampant and that customers are trying to steal from them. Alot of stores are now being more careful about taking coupons and seem to be looking at them more closely. BUT I would NEVER give my id just for a coupon....

i moved my question over from Hot Deals.

Other than items you need, the usual suspects for meeting the purchase requirement for ink/toner recycling are FAR and FARewards items.

Since most OD coupons exclude tech and software, when purchasing in-store try to use a competitor coupon whenever possible. From reports here and on FW, some stores are more accommodating about this than others.

For online orders, remember to use a cashback site. One complication is that OD can split a single order into multiple orders. If this happens, it will be noted during the check out process. The complicating factor is that some cashback sites do not handle this well. For example, Mypoints only awards points for one order per day and in a multiple order situation awards points only to the lowest valued of the multiple orders.

thanks bpvh for the tips. from what i understand in the ink recycling thread, the expiration dates for these recycle rewards are 90 days. which means max recycle rewards one can accumulate would be $180? is that correct?

also, about the quarterly issuance, i may not be understanding that too well. so let's say i purchase $120 of FAR software in 08/2010 and recycle 20 this month and 20 in 09/2010. so im thinking i'll be getting $120 in recycle rewards in quarter 10/2010 thru 12/2010? with an issuance date in november? lol did i make any sense?

also, about the quarterly issuance, i may not be understanding that too well. so let's say i purchase $120 of FAR software in 08/2010 and recycle 20 this month and 20 in 09/2010. so im thinking i'll be getting $120 in recycle rewards in quarter 10/2010 thru 12/2010? with an issuance date in november? lol did i make any sense?
Correct on both, for OD. OfficeMax pays monthly so if you bought the software 1st and recycled later, you would get the payout over 2 months. If you recycled twice and then bought the software, it would be paid out at once.

The OD payout would come right around thanksgiving (& BF).

RE max accumulation of rewards for OD: If OD and the US Mails cooperate, it is possible to have a few days overlap on two consecutive quarters rewards payouts but the earlier quarter's rewards would be days from expiring. Since this is your first quarter recycling and you missed July, your max ink/toner recycling rewards would be $120.

RE quarterly issuance: OD rewards for the third quarter (July - Sep) will be paid out near the end of Nov. While Nov. just happens to be in the fourth quarter (Oct - Dec), the rewards are for the 3rd quarter.

This may or may not be true. It has to do with the state the rewards are registered in!

I live in the State of FL. My OM rewards expires 1 year. So if you do the math.
Assuming 20 ink recycling ($3.00 each) for 12 months, and no extra rewards earned. 20 x $3 x 12 = $720.00 can be accumlated at one time.

I have learned that FL state laws requires these OM rewards expires at a min of 12 months for us. FL state laws also gives us better debit card restrictions etc.

I have heard other states laws are similar to FL state laws in regards to this. But I am NOT sure what states.

if I spent 60 bucks at OM on the free backpack deal, can I still turn in 20 cartridges and get credit for them without further spending?

And bummer on OD (previous post). When will OM follow suit?

It is apparently at the bottom of your recycling receipts if anyone wants to know.

Now they will get even less money from me as the quota for the year is $480. I can do that in FAR items in a weekend. Put it this way, I spent close to $5,000 from Jan-Feb this year to make quota for the whole year. Yes, in 60 days I spent that much on FAR items. Then they changed to 20 a month instead of 5 a day. I haven't spent a penny since. I have no idea how they can take that hit as there are plenty of people like me. Now they are even more screwed.

As long as the purchase of the 100% back in rewards item is a qualified purchase (type of item (backpack is ok), type of payment, etc.), then yes, it counts toward the annual purchase requirement for ink/toner recycling.

No hidden catch. In-store transactions are properly dated for OD, OM and Staples. It is online transactions that can have date issues.

I have turned in my recycling on the last day of the month at each of the three at one point or another during the past six months or so and the transaction has been properly accounted for and paid each time.

anyone willing to share a good seller for used ink cartridges (ebay, whatever)?

When buying on ebay, what is a good price per ink cartridge?

s_T_Blue
10-08-2010, 04:18 AM
When buying on ebay, what is a good price per ink cartridge?

It all depends upon the number of cartidges you purchase on ebay. The larger the purchase, the cheap the cartidges.

I suggest that you also focus on these facts.

Make sure you purchase 'virgin' cartidges. (that ones that have NOT been refilled already.)

Make sure you purchase ink cartidges, not ink tanks.

Make sure you do not purchase "HP 02" - they are cheap, but many OM, OD, & Staples will NOT accept them.

Make sure you do your homework ffirst. And figure out what stores (OM, OD and/or Staples) will you recycle cartidges at, and what brands of cartidges will they accept.

Make sure which brands of cartidges you are purchasing. The real cheap cartidges might be a mix lot of many brands such as OM, OD, Staples, CVS, Walmart, and other un-popular US brands. Which might be very hard to recycle at the stores.
I suggest paying a few more cents for each cartidge and go with a lot of HP or Lexmark or Kodak, etc....

I hope this helps.

Yes, but since I am the poster of the OP you might want corroboration:

2nd quarter rewards started showing up around the 08/25 (just start reading down from linked post):

Can not seem to access the MaxPerks site at this moment ....

OM's MaxPerks Rewards has a purchase requirement. Do you have sufficient qualified purchases?

On a calendar year basis, "Total recycling reward dollars issued for recycling may not exceed your total MaxPerks program qualified purchase balance." (from the t&c's from 01/01/2010)

If the issue is insufficient qualified purchases, this issue will not affect your recycling for this month. Both recycling and qualified purchases carry over from month to month until the calendar year end. Of course there will be no rewards payout from recycling until your qualified purchase amount increases.

If the issue is other than insufficient qualified purchases ... no idea.

I actually found the issue. But how dumb the maxperks CSR's can be? No one was able to understand the problem I was trying to discuss all were going round and round saying oh you still have $XX left for rewards + you need to spend another $XX to get the remaining rewards. I hope someone here can explain me what I can do..

Here is what happened. I had spent about $650 overall in around May 2010 and I started recycling in March. So, I knew I had enough spend for the whole year considering $3 per card / 20 carts a month and 10 months of recycling. ($600 required).

Now last month I bought couple of item using rewards for gifting some one. My wife did not like them (don't ask me why :D)..but I needed to return them. This is the first time I was returning an item bought with rewards. So, the store gave me merchandise credit (about $230) for the amount I paid through rewards. Now, when the "Return" transaction posted on my account, it had "negative" amount for "Qualifying amount" columns, which essentially reduced my "Total Qualifying spend" for the year by $230 which is causing me grief at this point.

My simple question to CSR's was, there are two transaction posted on my account in 2 days. "Purchase" transaction of amount $230 with "No qualifying amount" (which I understand because I did pay it with rewards) and "Return" transaction with "Qualifying amount" being "negative" $230. <--- I do not understand this part :omg: :omg::omg:

Any one has any insight on this?

Explaining anything remotely complex to phone support is maddening. Try email. There is an online submission form under "Customer Service >> Contact Us".

In the email lay-out the chain of events.

A. Purchased items paid with rewards. Note that a purchase paid with rewards does not generate qualified amounts. Demonstrate this by showing the transaction line in the rewards account:

Post Date // Transaction Date // Activity // Transaction Amount // Qualified Amount // Rewards Earned

nn/nn/nn // nn/nn/nn // Purchase // $230.00 // $00.00 //

B. Returned items paid with rewards. Then list the return transaction line:

Post Date // Transaction Date // Activity // Transaction Amount // Qualified Amount // Rewards Earned

nn/nn/nn // nn/nn/nn // Return (??) // -$230.00 // -$230.00 //

Note that just as a purchase paid with rewards does not generate qualified amounts, a return of a purchase paid with rewards should not generate negative qualified amounts.

One potential problem would be if the purchase and return can not be matched up.

Good luck.

I do not think the OM system is smart enough to relalize that your puchase was made with Rewards $'s so the return, should not have reduced your "Qualified amount spent".

I do believe that when you will spend the $230. in merchandise credit, this is give you an additional $230. in "Qualified amount spent". And you will be - made whole again.

A couple of things:

-- Purchases paid for with rewards have $0.00 in the "Qualified Amount" column.

-- If the OM system is not very smart, the default on a return would be of a purchase paid with a qualifying method. So a return of a purchase with rewards would have a negative in the qualified amount column.

Under "My Rewards" >> click on "Rewards Status" >> click on "Ink" >> click on the transactions Purchase Number and the resulting page will show the date and how many ink/toner carts were recycled (RECYCLING PROGRAM

Online use to have your Year to Date Spent with the actual correct number. They changed moronically to your Year to Date Spent on 10% reward items only. Meaning if you spent $30,000 on computers, your YTD = $0.00. Makes perfect sense

This idea occurred to me but sounds to simple so that surely it would not work. If I buy Staples gift cards in store will the amount of my purchase count towards my $1000 threshold and then when I use the gift card for a purchase will it count again towards reaching the $1000?

Unfortunately, this will not work.

The purchase of the gift cards will NOT count toward the $1000 threshold:

"A Member is automatically upgraded to Premier status when the Member's account reflects $1,000 of spending on all products and services at each or any combination of Staples US stores, by phone at 1-800-333-3330 and/or online at www.staples.com other than taxes, postage stamps, delivery charges, pre-paid phone cards, Staples gift cards and third party gift cards."

To get a complete picture of what counts toward the $1000 threshold, read the above together with:

"Qualifying Purchase Amount is the amount paid at checkout after application of all promotions, coupons and Rewards redemption. Amounts spent on taxes, postage stamps, delivery charges, pre-paid phone cards, Staples gift cards and third party gift cards do not count towards earning Rewards."

For the lucky few, third party gift cards (eBay, TGIFridays, etc.) and prepaid cards (Amex, MasterCard, Visa).

For the rest probably some combination of needed and eBay-able items and of course more bonus rewards items as to date MaxPerks rewards roll.

When the hospital's printers needed new toner cartridges, he was responsible for ordering them from Office Depot, receiving them, and installing them in the facility's various printers. He got a $1000 paycheck every two weeks for doing it.

can i have his job?

The accounting guy needs to be fired (didn't he/she notice the large charges for toner)? How can someone not notice this since its going on for 6 years?

i think it shouldn't be a problem. But i guess that depends on the cashier at the store.

Head's up, I got an email today from OMax saying for my account until 12/25 I get $50 back in MaxPerks bonus rewards for any $50 purchase (online or in store).

Not sure what would be gained from reading the WIKI of this thread ....

It's not relevant whether you consider the toner carts damaged, it whether the cashier would consider the toner carts damaged. As for that, its pretty YMMV whether the cashier will examine the toner carts.

The rewards from purchasing Norton will be 1% of the purchase price (less any coupon used, net of tax).

The ink/toner recycling rewards for the previous usually would have posted by now. Actually, I am surprised they have not -- at least for me and you. When the site updated earlier in the month I checked to make sure the 100% back in supplies bonus rewards (11/14-11/20) posted but did not check the recycling rewards.

The rewards site is not finished updating rewards for November transactions as the 100% back in shipping bonus rewards have not posted either.

Staples has updated the format of its rewards site. Not sure if the site is more accurate as I stopped updating my purchase file when I hit the $1000 level for retaining premier status. It claims to have year to date spending through the 15th.

One good change is that it seems to be tracking bonus rewards as my one 100% back in battery rewards purchase is noted.

I don't think the year-to-date spending is accurate. I have spent around $1100 total in jan to sep but it claims I have spent only $800 . A staples rewards rep confirmed that I spend $1100. Also if I go to "purchase history" and I add up each transaction I did from jan to sep, the total is $1100 out of pocket (after coupons, rewards/ink checks, etc).

Am thinking get the 7250 and PM to BB for $99.99, get extra $50 for recycling?

**EDIT** Per their weekly ad, the website price for the 7250 is $99.99 already.

I hope someone can answer this for me. For Office Depot, do they add the rewards to the member card or send a separate rewards card in the mail? Since it's been over 60 days after the third quarter ended. I'm so used Staples sending me a check after every month, so I'm just a bit confused on how the rewards is given from Office Depot. I'm be searching for ways to build up my OD points and found many free after rebate software items that I'm looking at getting. A lot of people say that they love these because they can use their rewards and turn rewards into cash. But if you use your rewards on these then you don't get any credit toward the required purchase amount right? At some point it seems like you have got to spend cash at OD to meet the purchase requirement and it seems like the best way to spend the cash to meet the purchase requirement is on the rebate items, so at least you get your cash back.

I figure that if I've met the annual purchase requirement, then I'd use my rewards to buy rebate items to get cash back. Am I missing something?

Actually, the number of rewards checks that can be combined in Staples stores depends on the manager. One of the stores around me takes only one rewards check along with one $ off coupon. When I tried to use 3 of my checks, they advised me to use the kiosk and pay at the cashier, since online orders allow 10 entries (coupons+rewards). So, it should considered YMMV, I guess...

No, we didn't spend anything. They just had us sign up for the OfficemaxPerks card then said that at the end of the month the credit for the cartridges would be loaded onto the Officemaxperks card. The 7 ink cartridges shows up on the account as pending $21.00.Did the cashier tell us wrong?
Yes ...

OfficeMax:

recycle: value: up to $3 in rewards per cartridge recycled -- see purchase requirement below
limit: t&c: 20 per calendar month - no per day restriction
some OM stores enforce a per day limit
type: t&c: Qualifying cartridges are any visibly undamaged HP, Dell, or Lexmark, ink/toner cartridges. HP02, HP11, and HP88 series cartridges and remanufactured ink/toner cartridges are not eligible for rewards under the recycling program. Qualified items are determined by OfficeMax at its sole discretion.
Some OM stores may accept ink tanks (ink cartridges without printheads) or remanufacturer cartridges purchase requirement: total recycling reward dollars issued for recycling may not exceed your total MaxPerks program qualified purchase balance.
qualifying purchases are any products or services in OfficeMax stores, catalogs or web site except for computers, gift cards, general use prepaid cards, phone cards, sales tax, purchases with a Retail Connect card, purchases made prior to the date of enrollment, and purchases made with your MaxPerks rewards.
recycling and purchases carry over from month to month - expire at calendar year end recycling rewards: issued: monthly with purchase rewards about 15-30 days after month's end on rewards gift check (unlimited use), printable from the rewards site
usage: t&c: reward cards are not redeemable for OfficeMax brand gift cards and are not redeemable for cash unless otherwise required by law. Use up to three (3) reward cards from the same MaxPerks account in a single transaction.
Most OM stores associates/managers do not allow purchase of non-OfficeMax gift or debit cards with rewards. The cash registers do allow such a transaction since OM corporate policy allows such a transaction. expiration: official: 90 days after the date of issuance
effective: the last day of the month 3 months following the month in which they are issued member services: website: http://www.officemaxperks.com/
email: online submission form
phone: 1.866.629.7375
https://www.officemaxperks.com/termsandconditionsbusiness.aspx

Q. How do recycling and the purchase requirement work together for Office Depot and OfficeMax?

A. Recycling rewards are only paid out to extent of qualified purchases. Here is an example based on Office Depot's program:

First quarter: recycle 20 carts, make $0.00 in qualified purchases. No payout for 1st quarter transactions. Recycling of $40 carried over to 2nd quarter.

Second quarter: recycle 60 carts, make $75 in qualified purchases. Payout of $75 for 2nd quarter transactions. Recycling of $85 carried over to 3rd quarter.

Third quarter: recycle 0 carts, make $202 in qualified purchases. Payout of $85 for 3rd quarter transactions. Qualified purchases of $117 carried over to 4th quarter.

Fourth quarter: recycle 60 carts, make $0.00 in qualified purchases. Payout of $117 for 4th quarter transaction. Recycling of $3 lost at year end.

OfficeMax would be similar just on a monthly basis (and of course at $3 per cart instead of Office Depot's $2 per cart).

Could you please let me know, so that I can make it more clear, what part of "Recycling rewards are only paid out to extent of qualified purchases"* is confusing.

If I have $21 pending from December for submitting ink cartridges and spend over $21 in January will I recieve $21 on a printable rewards card in February? If I use a $10 off $20 coupon on a purchase of $35 will it disqualify me from getting the $21 reward card from the ink cartridges?

I believe everything was reset at the start of calendar year, which means any balance/credit from ink recycling and unused qualified purchased amount from last year will not be carried over the following year.

If I purchase something and have it applied to my OD rewards yearly amount spent will it still count if I return that purchase?

Does the workliferewards site take into account returns and deduct them from your yearly amount spent?

While I do not whether this is enforced, both OD and Staples have a one account per address restriction as well.

OD: "Limit one Worklife Reward account per business/household"

I called OD and they said you can have two separate accounts per address.

One has to be personal and the other business.

OD rewards accounts are actually tied to phone number and not address per se.

In other words the business and personal account can be at the same address but must have different phone numbers for each account.

Easy enough with a landline and a cell.

Has any experience never getting their rewards from OD? My Q3 rewards never came in so I called mid December. I was told about 4-6 weeks and the 6 weeks is almost up with no rewards coming in mail.

Does anyone know where they send these rewards from for Office Depot? I live in FL so if they are sending it from Deerfield Beach, FL, then I don't understand why I'm not getting it. This is gonna be the last time I use OD for any rewards deal. Should just follow Staples example and allow us to print it ourselves.

My 3Q OD arrived 2 days before BF, and used in NOV. You should get it no later than 2 months after the quarter ends. It may have been lost, dunno if they would re-issue.

There are others way to link these OM accounts to a one person.

Did you use the same credit card to make purchases for different OM accounts?

Did you order some thing on line at OM.com for different OM accounts, and had then shipped to the same address?

I read your reply a couple of time. And I think I understand what you were trying to say.

You purchased some gift cards, and showed your maxperks cards, while using just one of your credit card, for all of your purchases. That was a big mistake!!!! If you would have used cash, this would never had happened.

My guess is, since OM found you have multiple accounts, they investigated and learned that you must had 2 other accounts. Maybe you used this same credit card, anytime in the past for these other 2 accounts?

It could be regional?

I am in the Dayton OH area. The guy ahead of me returned an item bought with rewards and the register prompted the CSR to scan a cash card. Then when I paid for a $6 item using my $20 ink reward, the register asks the CSR to scan a cash card again and no balance coupon was issued only the receipt transaction.

I have noticed they have new POS systems. On the screen when they scan your reward card, it will show the name and phone number registered with the card.

The bad thing about the cash card is it will be applied post-tax while the coupon is pre-tax.
The good thing is there is no expiration.
