i don't know where to put this thread nor if anyone ever posted this...

I found out that Canon has a trade-up deal for old cameras when I called them inquiring about my broken camera (it'll cost $100+ just for them to look at it and needs to be sent to IL).

So the deal is this... you can trade-in/up your old canon camera for a refurbished camera (last year's model with 6mo warranty) for a predetermined price based on your old camera model (they called it a matrix). for example, I traded my S40 for the S70 for $249 plus $10 s/h (2nd day) or $20 (overnight). They'll mail you your new camera with accessories (but no memory card) and you put your old camera in the packaging (you get to keep all the accessories) in the prepaid package. I also inquired about old S100, which you can trade up to SD400 for $150 (i think). It's not much but if you have an old broken camera that you no longer want and don't mind not getting the newest/hottest gadget or a second camera, this is a great deal.

All you have to do is call Canon @1-800-828-4040 and ask for tech support.

The number to call is 1-866-443-8002 Canon Loyalty program, or 1-800-828-4040 Tech support. [Canon Tech Support is open 10am-10pm EST according to the recording I just heard Nov '10. It's a weekday, so I'm not sure about Sat/Sun.]

Basically it's 31% off retail price

There is a comprehensive and fairly up to date FAQ here (http://slickdeals.net/?&u2=http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=948785) [photography-on-the.net (http://slickdeals.net/?&u2=http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=948785)]

[Note: Tech Support has to validate your qualification prior to Loyalty being able to order]
^^^ All CSR did was ask if camera I was trading in was working or broken (I said broken even though it is perfectly fine. It will be broken by the time I send it back, lol), asked for model of camera and the serial number.

Trades are only available with items that are in-stock on the refurbished website located at: http://shop.usa.canon.com/ (http://slickdeals.net/?&u2=http://shop.usa.canon.com/) (then click on the refurbished products link). NOTE: CLP had 7D bodies in stock and available that are *not* listed on the refurb website. It's best to call to find out exactly what is available.

Note (10/2009): You can also Email Tech Support about the Customer Loyalty Program. Go to Canon website and choose cameras http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ConsumerHomePageAct (http://slickdeals.net/?&u2=http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ConsumerHomePageAct) Tech Support is open 7 days a week and they'll ask you about what is wrong with your camera. Then they will give you the options for upgrade.

Pricing for the cameras/camcorders are around 15% off the listed price.

Bummer, hey only list the SD1000 online, as of Jan 25, 2010. While they definitely offer more choices on the phone. Hopefully, they'll update the webpage, soon.

PLUS TAX AND SHIPPING (2nd day shipping appears to free as of 3/16/11) Note: the cameras offered in the trade up are considered " refurbished " but Canon makes them just like new. Some are actually new overstocked, returned products. They are inspected and warrantied.

If you need a lens this is a great deal, as you are getting a $379 lens (lowest price on Amazon in the past year) for $103 over the cost of the body alone. The 18-55 IS lens included with the T2i isn't a bad deal either - $64 over the cost of the body gets you a lens worth $150 or more new on Amazon.

Came out to $561.xx after CA tax. No serial number required.

May 18, 2011 - Traded Canon A550 purchased from ebay for Canon T2i Kit for $512 + tax (free 2nd day shipping). NOTE: this is nothing to do with the trade-in program, but may be what ails your camera. Canon may just do a free replacement of the CCD sensor in your camera vs. categorizing your camera as 'broken' and accepting it for a trade-up.

Canon model have defective part that will eventually cause black screen.
"when you turn my camera on, all you can see is a black screen. like the lens is still covered. on "view mode" (when you can see previous pictures) it works fine. you can also enter the camera setting and menus."
This is a well known problem that mentioned in multiple threads. There is also a temp solution posted to get the camera to work for a short time but eventually it will fail again (like few days later).

Not actually the CCD disconnect problem but also a well known Canon defect.

They should add other Canon model like S2 to the list for free repair and free replacement. Based on those 2 threads, Canon charge people lot of money to fix them even though it is a well known "black screen" issue. Only really lucky few get it fix for free without jump thru hoops. Some got it fix for free after filed with BBB.

I just got my S2 IS fixed for free which had this black screen issue. I just emailed them about the issue and they sent a free shipping label and said they would look at it. A few days later they told me that they would fix it for free.
So try emailing them if you have this issue.

Can't you just keep both =)!

now it gives me another reason to buy Canons! The thing is, mine never had problems.. i had the S100, S110, S400, SD110, S410, 2-SD500 (one was lost), and a A70 (parent's) and none of them ever gave me problems.. I always ended up selling it on ebay because of a newer model.. the new SD700 looks nice by the way..

Sure but I bet they charge your credit card for what you owe in the credit they gave you for your old cam. Of course I don't see why you would want to keep a broken camera anyway...

Just called, and they told me that my camera must be broken to qualify. I have an SD100 and an upgrade to an SD400 is $149.00. Not bad, but my old camera isn't broken!?! Perhaps I can break it. A new SD400 goes for almost $300. HMMM.............

All those who got thier black friday orders cancelled for the T1, they are sending out emails that they will honor the price now. So basically, you get a new T1 for the Refurb T1 price...Canon Corp sucks! (i like the T1 though)

Nothing is cracked and I don't hear any rattles but it just doesn't turn on.

What are my options? I already have a G11.

Not to be rude, but did you read the previous couple pages? Those show the most recent quotes people have gotten. It's definitely worth getting an update because the options change, but that's where you come in :)

The instructions are in the wiki about how to get a quote. Canon is the only one who knows what they are offering this very moment so your best bet is to call/e-mail them and ask...

...then if you're feeling nice, come back here and post them!

Called this morning to see what they were offering in the way of DSLR's. She said the T2i is not part of the program yet and the T1i w/ kit lens would be $519.

This makes no sense to me since you can buy a refurb T1i w/ kit lens outright from their website for $499.

I think it's because the refurb T1i just dropped price on their website. Listed originally at 599.

As you can see, the older XSi is still listed at $499, same price as the T1i.

Actually, for many of us, trading in a broken camera to get an extra 20% off their refurb pricing for essentially new cameras does work out to be a sweet deal. Not always, but often enough that this thread has been active for 5 years, this March.

Canon recycles/trashes the trade ins, they don't refurb them and resell them. So, they don't make any money off the trade ins. They do make money in that they get to sell more "refurbs" which are overstock/open box/etc. but virtually new items. Some are current models, most are a generation or two back. So, they get to sell out of production models.

It can be Win-Win, and has been for many of us. I've done the Rebel XT kit, Rebel XS kit and the 50D kit, so far. 7D is in my sights, since it's about $1500 new for body only, but I can unload an old busted Canon film SLR and get a 7D for about $1080, or $1190 after 9.75% Calif sales tax. That's ~20% off. Which I haven't seen as a regular sale price on the 7D. [I didn't do Black Friday shopping.] Maybe when the 7D gets on in years, it'll come down in price, but 'til then... this trade in program for busted cameras is pretty sweet for me.

*Actually, apples to apples the 7D would be more like 28% off pre-sales tax if I use the $1500 retail price from an in-state retailer that would also charge tax.

Is there supposed to be a prepaid shipping label to send in the broken camera?
Or does that come separately in the mail?

Check your email, they create (2) orders with (2) different order #'s for you, one for the new camera, and one for the mailing return label. I got (2) different emails for each order#, the one order # with return label had pdf attachment for you to print with UPS return label. Cheers!

Hmm, that's odd. I never received a second order # from them. My account only shows a single order. Did you receive both emails at the same time?
I'll probably give them a call tomorrow (the one time SD rules don't apply).

Any Canon camera from point and shoot to top DSLR will get you the same 20% off refurbed price. You gotta do the math whether it's better, money wise, to trade it in to Canon or sell it on eBay or privately. I personally purchased a broken point and shoot camera on ebay for $20 and will use that as a trade-in when the 5DII becomes available. This way I can sell XTi and make some of my money back (instead of trading it in to Canon)

I've been going back and forth on this thread for a few years, and have a broken S400 camera in pieces in my basement. I've never had a reason to use this program with the deals I've found here on SD.

We paid $103 for a brand new SD1100, and $93 and $120 for brand new SD1400 from Staples. Never have those deals been available through the trade-up program.

This is a simple way for Canon to ditch returns and fix what they have coming in, only to resell at a huge profit.

Maybe this is only true for Elph's, but I've never saw the value in this thread for my needs. YMMV.

THe cameras they sell are not repaired or consumer returns, they are overstocked returns from store that couldn't sell them.

Since they technically left Canon's hands they cant be resold as new so thats why the say they're refurbished. Of the three cameras I've gotten from them I could not tell them apart from new.

I will agree however with some of the PS deals this last season its pretty hard to justify trading in a PS for another PS but the SLR deal is still pretty good considering you can land an old film SLR off ebay for under 20 bucks and trade it in for a XS for sub $350 TYD

Some of them are actually used by consumers, you can tell by looking at the actuations.
Canon also responded in an email stating "the source of these cameras is not released".

Could care less since they look new. But I mean they do have the ability to replace "malfunctioning parts" so that they look new.

actutatuions is a bad measure. sometimes canon will test the cameras, but not reset the actuation count.

but some people have reported getting "visibly used" cameras. That is a little scary.

I've seen refurbs with over 2k actuations. Really not a big deal at all. 2k on a 100k+ shutter on a modern day DSLR is nothing.

I am looking to trade in a SD870IS with a lens error. It will not function at all :(

I was offered the following:

E 470 $48
A1100 $72
SD 1200 $86.40
SX 120 $119.59
SD 960 $134
SX 10 $207
G 11 $259

Can anyone comment on the value of these offers? From what I have seen on Amazon it's quite a savings, of course Amazon does not offer Refurbs.

I am looking for a camera that is compact enough to be carrier around a lot. I often carry mine in the cargo pockets of my shorts, generally every day. So I don't want something terribly large. I would prefer something with a nice optical zoom but if I can't find that in a decent size I'll have to compromise. It looks like the SD 960 might be a good choice.

EDIT: I guess some of these are not as large as I thought. I'm going to have to take a closer look at it since it looks pocketable and has a nice zoom!

I did get a G11 (through the loyalty program) but I had to send it back. So now I am cameraless again. As I wait for the damn G11's to come back into stock I'm wondering what my other options are. Can any of you help? I don't know why I'm making such a thing of it, but here I am. A bit of my history...I owned a XTI. I used the basics, but never got too into it. I ended up using auto a lot! Now, I'm a full time nursing student, with an autistic son. So still no time to photograph for fun. I do want to be able to take pictures of my son. So I need something that can be quick to take a photo. He's a fast one that doesn't pose for pictures. He's not always keen about the flash, but he's getting better. Size is not an issue. I like the SX30IS, S95 and the G11. Like I said, it's just mainly catch the boy doing something cute and the occasional beautiful photo opportunity.

So what does a girl do?

The G12 is the same camera (well, not exactly) as the S95. Same sensor, faster lens with less zoom. It is great for the pocket and you can control pretty much everything. Only downside to the S95 is no hot shoe for external flash, but I doubt you'll miss it.

Did you have to have a G series camera to trade for a G11?

I have an SD770 IS and think I want to pick up a G series camera or a DSLR but didn't know if there is some policy that only lets you trade a certain type of camera for the same "type."

I traded an old film camera. I don't think there is a rule that you need a certain camera to get another certain kind. There is no price list to look up, you just have to call. Hi all

I called today for my 3 yr old Canon S5 (broken battery compartment) and was offered G11.

I really wanted the refurb S95 (mainly for the 720p video) but was told that does not fall under the loyalty program. She also 'confided' the S95 may never make it to the program due to it already selling extremely well.

But since both the G11 and the S95 use the same sensor, is the G11 any better/worse than the S95? Wondering if I should save some more $$$ and get the S95 later.

Thanks!

They don't seem to care as long as it's a Canon. Put it together as best you can. Once they receive it they'll probably validate your credit and destroy the old camera with little regard to it's condition.

http://shop.usa.canon.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductListingViewAll_10051_10051_-1_29252_highPrice_grid

If your T1i is still working it's best to sell it. You'll get over $300 easily for it.

Traded broken SD1100 for T2i with kit lens for $512+tax+free 2 day shipping. T2i was OOS yesterday but back in stock today.
Was quoted prices for XS, XSi, T1i for pretty much 20% off the Canon website for these refurbed products.

Thanks for the heads up, sdsaves! I called last night re: the 7D. Was OOS, too.

And I just completed my call in less than 10 minutes to get my 7D body on the way!

Merchandise: $1,359.00
Promotional Savings: - $271.80 [the 20% off the public refurb price]
Shipping: FREE
Tax: $106.00 [Calif. Ouch.]
Order Total: $1,193.20 NICE!!!

Free shipping. And I've already received two emails from Canon. One for the order. One for the return FedEx shipping label. Cool. I can just drop it off at the old Kinko's/FedEx Office down the street. ***UPDATE: my mistake, the 2nd email was just for shipment notification. I got my return shipping label email 2 days later. And it's for UPS for my trade-in vs. the 2-day FedEx for shipping the 7D.***

I'm trading in an old EOS 850 35mm film body that I got for essentially free. [I bought that on ebay for ~$110 just to get the made in Japan Canon 50mm f/1.8 Mk I lens with metal mount, not the "Nifty-Fifty" all plastic, made in Taiwan current version [Mk II] That lens is worth more than what I paid for the body and lens, combined.

This is my 3rd Loyalty Trade In. Got the Rebel XS; 50D w/kit lens, and now this 7D. [So bummed I missed out on the 5D Mk II.]

Xmas in March!

not likely. the only deviation was when a couple people on FW managed to convince a CSR the T2i was on the list. (this was before the T2i was actually added to the list)

No, they are usually actually overstocks.

Got the 7D body through the Loyalty Program. Packaging is generic (not original 7D retail packing) but sturdy. Body itself looks new - no scuff marks anywhere including the hotshoe. Leads me to believe these are overstock items.

Maybe demand for 7D for its full price is non-existent so it is being dumped at 20% off. However, the 5D Mark II is probably selling fast at its price so was retracted from the Loyalty Program.

I got my 50D kit and it was DOA, they are exchanging it out and paying for return shipping though. As for condition, the camera looked as new however the lens had a large (1.5-2in long) blemish on the front element coating.

All the 50mm 1.8's [Mk I & II] or all Canon lenses? 'Cause neither is correct.

I have several Canon lenses, and have given away to family and sold a couple others... and only the cheapest ones were made in Taiwan.

And as sure as I'm staring at one of my two Canon 50mm f/1.8 Mk I lenses in front of me: It is made in Japan. [The Mk II is made in Taiwan, like I orig. stated.]

/Congrats on the $30 find... that's a great deal!

I'll try to upload a photo of both of mine:

I finally pulled the trigger and got the T2i kit. Traded in my old sd450 that was having power issues (plus my wife has the s95 so no need for two P&S). I've played around with a XT and XSi for long periods of time but this will be my first time owning a DSLR! I do have a background in photography though. I took 4 years of photography/advanced photography back in high school 8 years ago but we had to develop our own negatives and pictures in an actual darkroom! Those things don't even exist anymore do they? I'm hoping my background in "old school" photography translates well into the new technology. Kind of like Tennis ------> Ping pong.

Any suggestions on some good glass to get? Thinking about picking up Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 for nature shots. I have a ton of lenses from my AE-1, will those work in the T2i?

I ordered the camera two days ago (3/14) and it still says "Pending Shipment". When can I expect it? What is the usual wait time before these ship? I thought it was 2 day shipping? I want my camera!

They call you to confirm the order. Did they call you yet? If not then you need to call them back. The same thing happened to me. I called them back and the order was shipped within a couple of hours after that.

They still do darkroom photography in high schools/college

Plenty of EF/EF-S lenses to choose from. Probably suggest the nifty 50mm f/1.8 for $100 to get you started off. If you could afford the 10-22mm, I guess why not something like any L lens? hahaha

No, your AE-1 lenses wont work, (they will, however, with an adapter you could get off ebay, but all MF(and maybe setting your aperture manually too).

no accessories to be returned (keep the battery/charger etc). If it's SLR/DSLR just send the body.

well the mk1 feels a lot more solid than the mk2.. i've never actually taken pictures with both of them to compare.. but my friend bought the 50mm mk2 from amazon for 70some back 2-3 years ago.. and i got the 50 mk1 for cheap.. and if u are able to find one that's in good quality.. i'd def recommend it

i had a hard time deciding between the 10-22mm and the 17-40L eventually i took the 17-40L..deciding factor for me was that i was eventually gonna upgrade to 7d or 5d from my 30d.. and EF-S lens woudln't fit.. at least that's what i've been told

I got a refurb 50D from Canon about 3 weeks ago. When it arrived I've checked the body for any visible signs of use (didn't find any, it was mint), checked the number of shutter actuations using EOSInfo, made sure that the flash and the buttons / dials worked properly and been shooting with it quite a bit to make sure there're no issues (and because I love the feel of 50D after using Rebel body for years).

best is to run though all the different modes, check viewfinder light up, check autofocus, dead pixels on lcd (rare), battery compartment and contacts for grime and corrosion, check for how the shutter sounds in continuous, check shutter count, make sure all buttons work, shake camera lightly and make sure mirror or anything inside is not loose (sometimes a dropped camera thats sent in for warranty might have plastic shards broken off inside). then update software and shoot a good amount of pictures in different lighting and check them on your pc.

btw why did you start with a 50d lol

I have a canon rebele xti that I bought 3 years ago, but due to my own dumb mistake broke it (tried to jam a memory card with a wrong end and the little pins inside the camera broke off).
Its a rebel xti.

I'm not sure how much it would cost to fix it, but I can only get about $300 for it now once its fixed.
Any ideas if this is a better choice?

That 17-40mm is pretty sweet, I'll bet. I love my 24-105 L f/4. I just got the 50mm f1.4 and it's nice. The USM is great [quiet/fast] compared to the 50mm f1.8's that I have. For everyday walk-around usage, I like my Sigma 18-250mm OS hyper-zoom on my 50D. Lenses! Man... the good ones cost so much! hahaha

The Mk II 50mm is known for having the front lens element pop out if you knock it against something, at times. But, it's a great deal, since the optics are the exact same as in the Mk I. If you can get a Mk I for $120 or less, then I'd go for that, as the price difference over the Mk II is worth it, IMO. [The Mk I goes for about $125-160 on ebay.]

What fyu said. You can still get around a $100 for that 'broken' XTi on ebay. Much better to trade in an old 35mm film EOS body that you can get for about $20. Good luck!

From the wiki post on the first page:

You can also Email Tech Support about the Customer Loyalty Program. Go to Canon website and choose cameras http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer...omePageAct Tech Support is open 7 days a week and they'll ask you about what is wrong with your camera. Then they will give you the options for upgrade.

Also, my call took 7mins or so..probably faster than typing an email & waiting for reply...

They call you to confirm the order. Did they call you yet? If not then you need to call them back. The same thing happened to me. I called them back and the order was shipped within a couple of hours after that.

How soon after you order should you expect a call back? How soon should I wait before I call them? I got the return label email but my order is still pending shipment (granted I only called a couple hours ago, but just wondering for reference in the next couple days if I should call?)

I had to call to get them to ship out my order.

Here's my experience:

1) 1st rep told me that the camera had to be broken...wouldn't help me

2) hung up and called back...2nd rep didn't make it a big deal

3) 2nd rep did ask for a serial number of my old camera

They're definitely not brand new but the extent they are used varies. You can get an idea of how "used" they are by checking the shutter actuations.

I called this morning and someone picked up right away. He said it would have shipped today without me calling..right now it says "warehoused"

I had to call to get them to ship out my order.

Here's my experience:

1) 1st rep told me that the camera had to be broken...wouldn't help me

2) hung up and called back...2nd rep didn't make it a big deal

3) 2nd rep did ask for a serial number of my old camera

- the serial number question seems to be hit-or-miss

Can just about any older canon camera work with this? I'm looking to get a refurb t2i, but need to purchase a dead or non-fuctioning camera since I tossed mines out a few years back not knowing about this program. Any links to purchase bad cameras that would work for a t2i would be much appreciated. Thanks.

I purchased a Canon 7D through this program. The only issue is a deal pixel on the LCD (not on the sensor). After reading that 1 dead pixel is within "tolerances" for even new cameras, I didnt bother enough to return it.

a) I know you cannot check total shutter actuations on newer Canon cameras. The camera only shows actuations since last battery charge. I do not clearly know which cameras (older?) show actual actuations.....so please google if you are concerned.

b) Most higher end cameras are not used, but overstock returns from trade. Atleast thats what my camera looked to me when it arrived.

FWIW, I have been using my 7d for 4 months now without any complaints. THe only issue I faced was when the camera failed to recognize the memory card. That was when the camera had been lying exposed on a particular chilly Chicago winter evening for an hour.

So, I read here (http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1010&message=34425722) that the broken camera had to have been registered before sending it in for the rebate? How have the people been getting by with buying a used camera off of craigslist for the trade-in purpose?

I've fleabayed three Canon film SRS for under $20 TMD and used all of them to trade for DSLR's with no issues. Regular PS had to be "broken" but film ones did not so I bought the cheapest canon film SLR's I could find and used them for trades.

Just a heads up: Canon will call you to verify your order after you've placed it. They called me on a Sunday afternoon, leaving a message and a call back # that's only open M-F -_-

Then I left a message for them on Monday. They didn't call me back until after they were closed. Of course, I missed that call.

So two days later, I finally got them to ship it. Just be ready to get that 2nd call to avoid delays.

Anybody familiar with the return policy for the canon refurbished store? After playing around with this T2i this weekend, I have realized that it is just too much camera for me. Reading the return policy on the canon website points out that they will return "defective and unopened" products, with no mention to opened products at all.

Am I screwed? I just want to exchange this for a lower model camera...

No, actually the lady on the phone told me to make sure not to send in my broken SD1000 until I was absolutely sure that this was the right camera for me--which led me to believe that I would get 14 days to evaluate whether or not this was the right camera for me.

Not sure if you can send it back or not. However, I suspect there's lots of people who will take it off your hands for what you paid for it. Of course you will have to send in the broken SD1000 and thus not be able to use it to send in for a different camera.

Well i asked the canon rep about that. Just put in your camera. charger batteries straps and what not are not neccessary. The system will recognize it thru the shipping label.

A1100 use AA battery, and so does sx120IS . SX120IS is bigger but its more zoom.
SD1200 a nice one. balance between size and quality.
SD960 has HD if HD movie is needed, I will pick this.
G11 may be an overkill for you... but will gives you control and better quality

so you have to think if AA battery, big zoom, pocket size or HD video is your priority. I will leave the research on shutter lag for you.

I have an broken Canon sd890, was thinking about it. (already enough DSLR gear, don't want to open wallet for that) I ended up picked up an sd1300IS for about $90 or so (a few deal recently)
Honestly, DC quality is what it is, for 'record' then I think they will be okay. If you want low light/ flash/ frame per shot kind of thing, you have to go DSLR or these m4/3 system or Sony NEX
BTW, none of the Canon DC feel like what it used to be... I think the rest catch up on it.

I am a Kindle user and sometimes I have to be careful with the book I order. If the book has lots of illustrations and pictures I may be better off buying the hard copy. This is true for lots of photography books.
David Busch's Canon guides are pretty good, I bought the one for the 7D guide and it is a great book. I ordered the hardcopy instead of the Kindle, some users include their comments about kindle editions in the Amazon review.

I would go ahead and get a 18-55mm lens because well you can get them dirt cheap on the second hand market. And the they really are not that bad. A non image stabilized version often goes for $75 on ebay, and the IS just a bit over $100.

If you want to spend a little more money you can get like a 28-135mm kit lens from the 50D/60D/7D etc. This is a pretty awesome lens and occasionally can be had for <$250.

This morning T2i was $511+tx with 18-55, but I got the body only for $447 +32 tax, and next on Ebay got a NEW 18-135 IS kit lens instead for more 'walk-around' lens range for $280. Supposedly as good as 18-55 wide, and better at 55 and beyond, and nice size, but $200 more. I just can't pop for the >$400 lenses at this time. Will try with the T2i and see how it goes. Can always resell on eBay for these prices. Will post back how the combo works. So, my total for refurb T2i w/ new 18-135 outlay is $760. Plan to get the 50 1.8 later.

Does anyone know what camera I can I get for trading in a Powershot S200 Digital ELPH. I look at the front page and read all 14 pages but did not see anyone mention this model. I did not call Canon yet until I know what I want. Thanks.
you'll have to call canon. their stock changes every few weeks, and the wiki and op is not really updated anymore.

To someone like me who has never owned a DSLR yet, how would you rate the quality of Canon refurbs (so far it looks like most are great according to the replies here)?

Is it really not worth spending more for a year warranty (or more)?

What kinds of basic accessories would one recommend every DSLR owner have (remember, I am a total DSLR n00b)?

Would someone without too much photography experience really feel the difference between the XS/t1i/t2i?

Thanks!

The T2i I got is in excellent condition. It looks and feels new.

As for accessories, you're going to need media cards (SDHC and/or CF, higher speed SD cards recommended if you're shooting video). My T2i came with a strap and battery + charger. If you're shooting outdoors a lot you might want some extra batteries, polarizer, UV filters, etc and if you're shooting indoors a lot there's a AC cable you can buy separately. Also, a case is always good to have.

Then, there's a whole wide world of lenses to buy. That hobby can get really expensive really fast.

Is this a good deal? I mean I have two broken canon cameras to trade but isnt it cheaper just to find a good decent camera on sale with warranty?

Amazing reply! thanks!

So you'd say there's no reason to "want" the regular warranty that comes with a new Canon camera as opposed to the 90 day limited warranty with the refurb?

Because my question about accessories was so vague and n00bish, i'll try to rephrase:
What CHEAP accessories you'd say are absolute basics to have?
Could you give me examples of polarizers and UV filters you'd recommend please? I guess AC cable and other camera-dependent stuff I can check out later!

Thanks so much!

Just called in to trade in my S400 with a bad CCD. Was offered the SX120, SD1200, and A1100. Basically, anything on the Canon website is not available for trade-in as far as the compact cameras are concerned.

Called in for my old Powershot S3, they offered the SX120, asked about the G11, the rep said they had 140 of them last week and were all gone.

Why not just go full dslr instead of a g11?

there are plenty of reasons to get at G11 instead of a DSLR (I have both).

i have an underwaterhousing for the G11 for diving. the housing for a DSLR would be nearly 10X as expensive.

portability. sometimes i don't want to carry a DSLR. the G11 can go in a cargo pocket or clipped to my waist in a case (or in your purse, if you're a woman). i also keep it in my work bag in case i need a good camera at work (which I do occasionally). i wouldn't carry my DSLR around in my work bag.

most DSLRs don't have articulating screens.

not many DSLRs for <$300 (especially when you include lenses).

I ask about the T3i before I made my purchase. They are not a part of the trade ups yet. She said "it will be quite awhile before this is on the list".

...Update, well the shiny new 18-135 came today, and the T2i works flawlessly, 1st image was IMG0025. The combo is sharp. I had tried the 55-250, but this metal mounted 18-135 outshines in the 55-135 range, no need for a 18-55. Can crop for the 135-250 if necessary. But, most importantly, the tradeup T2i is awesomely fresh.:woot:

Yes, I traded an old sure shot film camera from the late 80s. It was my dad's old camera and it hasn't been shot in years. I think it was $1,087 plus tax, with free shipping. It should come by Monday.

If you dont want to advertise what kind of camera you have by the brand of your bag, I recommend getting the Lowepro Adventura 170 camera bag (http://www.amazon.com/Lowepro-Adventura-170-Camera-Black/dp/B002P3KY7Y/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1302655187&sr=8-2).

$23 on Amazon and its a pretty nice bag. Just got one and its great.

That looks like an awesome bag, but I'm thinking more of a carrying around the neck kind of deal, like this:
http://www.amazon.com/Caselogic-SLRC-201-Zoom-Holster-Black/dp/B001TZUS98/

Also I ordered this for my t2i:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003HM3LZE

And finally I'm considering this:
http://www.amazon.com/Tiffen-58mm-UV-Protection-Filter/dp/B00004ZCJI

What do you think about the case, possibly smaller and more portable, and the UV protector. From what I read it's basically just a lens protector with mild added UV filtering.

1) I have the sister bag for that case logic. (The medium sized bag that can hold two additional lenses - or in my case, a speedlite, a charger, and an additional lens) It's a tight fit for my 60D, but it works. My only complaint is the strap - I actually took a nicer, less "slippery" padded strap from an unused laptop bag and it worked out pretty nice.

2) Get the UV filter. It's a good thing to keep the lens protected.

Well, what are you going to use it for?

I'm currently using the Sigma 18-250 as my all-around travel lens. Some people don't need that level of zoom.

Canon makes good glass. Reviews on Amazon can't steer you wrong. It just depends if you want zoom and what you're looking to do with it.

And if you have no qualms about buying refurbed bodies, Canon's store has a selection of refurbed lenses - but remember to compare prices - some prices on Canon's site are good - some not so much.

screen protector is unnecessary. canon dslrs already have a screen protector built int. ~$20 straight from Canon

the UV filter is only good for physical protection. The UV filtering does nothing for digital. Also lower quality filters will actually degrade image quality. It may not be easily noticeable, but its something to keep in mind.

Tiffen filters are pretty highly rated. And any degradation you're talking about is completely insignificant to an amateur shooter or beginner who is starting out with the T2i. Don't scare the beginners.
