Unable to rep for older deal thread.

I've noticed that reps aren't allowed on threads that are a few months old. I can understand the reasoning is probably so that people from the lounge and podium can't go into old threads to rep people. But I have one concern. Some people actually wait until after ordering a product, getting delivery, sending in rebates and finally getting the rebates before going back and repping the OP for a great deal.
I usually rep right away, since it was their effort I'm rewarding, but I have seen posts of others saying they wait until the deal is completely settled before repping. And that can take a few months for rebate checks to appear.
Just my 2 cents.

I tried to rep someone for a freebie and got this message:

"Sorry, you cannot give reputation to this post. The post is either too old or it is disabled for that paticular forum.

Old posts can not be repped. It is currently set at 30 days.

It should last as long as the rebate return period at least, say 10-12 weeks max.
If RP whoring is the game, people will always find a way around an arbitrary limit anyway, like I just did for someone because I finally go the rebate check today.
Deal dun, RP given. I dun pay for summin I didn't get yet. I try to ALWAYS RP if I benefited.

I see that it's been changed you can only rep someone if the post was in the last month ago. I wish we could change that. So many times (especially in freebies) I'll want to rep someone (for instance, the free oil of olay products) and I can't because the post was a few months ago. The OP still deserves a rep even though I didn't see the post until now.

IMHO, reps are mostly for the deal itself at point in time when the deal is active, not for the final outcome, which may include an extended rebate period and possibly even a period of product usage.

A poster sees a deal and posts it. That's his responsibility and what he does to merit rep points. Maybe something changes along the way, like possibly there were so many orders that the vendor didn't fulfull them. It's not the fault of the poster. Or, maybe the rebate fulfillment company has trouble handling a large volume - that's not the responsibility of the poster, either.

Most people are going to rep right away for a deal they think is good and not come back many months later to follow-up. Or, they're rep for a deal they don't even buy, just because it looks good.

I wonder how many reps come in during the initial deal period versus how many more might come in long term. I suspect that the vast majority of reps a thread is ever going to earn are made while the deal is still on the first page or two.

true..it doesnt allow you for after a month..but incase u wanna rep after u got the product..i would find another post by them and rep!

autumn was talking more about deals that are valid for more than 30 days... and get bumped by a repost.

there's going ot be tradeoffs... abuse for people just searching any post to rep when its not deserved, or people being denied legitimate reps.

i think bean means that the restriction should be disabled (ie lifted) in tech support, so more people *can* be repped
