The lounge is filled with these now. My kid is the cutest. Vote for my design. My pet is the best. I am so sick of seeing one a day in the lounge for people who rarely post else wise. Can we get rid of these? Anyone else with me?

I don't see a problem with it. I like to help people out like that.

If the winner gets a monetary or it's equivalent as a prize, then they are Self Promotions. I Mod Alert them for the Lounge mods to remove.

FINALLY!!!! Someone who feels the same way I do! I never voted on any of those because they come on just to solicit vote. It's not fair because I don't even know them and the other contestants are prolly just as good!
I would definitely participate if a regular lounger was asking because I feel like I've known you farking addicts for a long time but for n00bs I won't.

Then again, they technically do break the Self Promo rules. Hence why I let the Moderators for those areas know about them.

Yes, but what about people who ask to help their friends out-- is that self promo?

My vote is yes.

it is technically self promotion because the winner will be gaining something.
it's an unfair advantage for a user to sign up on the forums and SOLICIT votes. their opponents may not know about forums...they may be just relying on friends, families and the fairness of other viewers to vote.

the winner does gain something, but it is not self promotion. I don't like the idea of it either but if I was in a contest and a friend of mine unbeknownst to me put it on the forum board, how would it be self promoting? Just a rhetorical question.

What about the Armstrong Promo? No one seemed to have a problem with it when that was going around.
Like I said before, I don't like the idea either... I am just playing devil's advocate

I don't know what the Armstrong Promo was about so I can't answer that.
But, in my opinion I think there's a difference between a friend asking for votes and someone who just posts on the forum. Being friends, you would want your friend to win and you would be more than happy to vote. But on the other hand, if someone you don't know just comes on and creates a thread, it becomes...well, i can't come up with an appropriate word for it yet.
I think in the end, it's all about fairness with me.

It's called an unfair advantage like you said before :)
TR said before that the SD rules posted in the FAQ are not the end-all-be-all; they are just a guideline. There are some rules not posted there that are still rules here and some of the rules posted there that have been expanded outside there general scope. I think that an unfair advantage in this instance could constitute self promo; I was just taking the other side.
Also the rules are subject to change at anytime-- maybe this will be one of those times ;)

:muahaha: That wasn't self promo, that was getting something free for mostly everyone. If you saw the thread, you would see it wasn't self promo.
Question: "What is a self-promo?"
I know there must be limits, but is it based on the size of your company, or the amount of revenue you generate on a monthly basis? The reason I ask this is I have been accused of this when I posted a website I used. It wasn't mine or anyone else's I know of, but the word 'self-promo' was repeatedly thrown around. And though this does not directly relate to the OP, I usually ignore 'my baby' threads, I don't think it's too far off base. The website I refer to was small and not very professional looking, but I could vouch for their legitimacy as I had used the service for quite a while. The thread ended up being deleted.
My question, again: "What is a self-promotion?"
If Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, W. Alan McCollough (CC CEO), or heaven forbid, Brad Anderson (Best Buy CEO), were to post a deal on SD it would be self-promotion, no? But what about an employee of one of these companies that participates in profit sharing? Or any number of companies that are listed on SD on a regular basis?
While I agree with the concept and appreciate the freedom from hundreds of threads touting questionable or undesirable products, the sites' definition seems a bit murky to me.
Self-promotion & referrals are NOT allowed.
We are very strict about no referrals being allowed. Doesn't matter what kind of referral, if you both get something good out of it, or if its confined to one thread. We do not allow referrals here and there will be no arguments that will make us change our minds. Users will be warned and after two referral posts its a permanent ban.:idontknow

This other site I was a mod on had a forum specifically for self-promotion type posts. It was very useful for moving "Vote for my Friend's Dog Picture" type threads to.

Just don't visit the lounge often enough to see them, or totally humiliate them so they never come back.

I agree. They should not be allowed and should be classified as self promotion if they are not already. I mod alerted a few of these and made comments in the thread, but no action was taken and all the people in the thread whined and bitched at me.

I vote we mod alert them all as possible self-promotion and let the Lounge Mods decide.
Of course, i don't want to be a pest about Mod alerts eoither....
what to do, oh what do to?
OK.. I vote we let FANG eat them. (the posters not the threads)
