How to set up a home network?

I was hoping someone could help me set up a home network. I have a desktop Windows XP and just bought a netbook with Windows 7 - both the basic versions..

All I really want to do is to be able to access the music and some files on my desktop with my netbook. I know you can "share" folders, but need to know how to access them over my wifi.

Basic idea is : Set up all your PCs in the same workgroup and enable resource sharing.

Also Windows Firewall is turned on so you might want to turn it off temporarily if you find you're not connecting to the other computers.
