View Full Version : Losing posts in chat threads

Ok, I understand the whole thing about chat thread not counting towards a person's total number of posts. But why does a person's post count go down when a thread is changed to a chat thread by a mod? Surely there is a way to keep the posts made while a thread is a non-chat one even after it is changed to a chat thread. Then all posts made after the change wouldn't count. I know last night that I had over 1,130 posts, but now I have about 80 less posts to my count.

It really isn't important that I have a certain number of posts, but it is kind of annoying that certain threads get changed when they don't go off topic (see the NFL mock draft thread in the Lounge) while many others are allowed to stay the same. It seems far too random as to what threads get changed and which ones don't. There isn't any consistency.

So I think either thread categories need to be left alone once set or there needs to be a certain criteria to changing threads that should be followed consistently by all mods instead of being left up to the discretion of each one. Because, while one mod may think that a thread needs to be changed, another one might not. See my point?

Sorry for this being so long and I realize this issue has probably been brought up several times in the past, but I hope my thoughts are seriously considered.

who actually *looks* at the thread categories?

So no one is going to give me any kind of answer on this?

Love how some threads in here are just ignored. I'm not just complaining because it is my thread. But also the threads like the one about adding a health icon. That could have a simple answer to it.

The purpose of the Chat threads is to keep a certain amount of post whoring to a minimum, or at least to help differentiate between users with high post counts who are active in other areas of the forums vs. just the Lounge. I'll not get into the merits of that in this thread, as it has already been hashed out many, many times in the past.

To answer you question, once a thread has been changed to 'Chat', all posts in that thread no longer count toward post count. Often, this only happens when the thread turns to post whoring anyway. As mods, we are not going to start going through threads and figuring out which post is a post whoring post, and which is not. Once a thread crosses the line, *poof*, all posts are now post whoring posts in that thread.

like raddish said, thread starts out with good intentions. if it becomes off topic, or there's jsut "chatty" posts (the nfl draft thread is a good example. there was a lot of  or waiting... posts) it gets chatted.

I realize that it would be tedious to go through each thread and find which posts are on topic and which are not. That is not what I was suggesting. I am just asking that maybe there be some sort of CONSISTENCY in the way threads are turned to chat. Like I said before, it is just a mods personal preference that decides this. And all mods will obviously not have the same mentality on what is considered "chatty" and what is not. I just don't think it is fair to take away posts from everyone just because a couple of people might be dumb and get off topic in a particular thread for a few posts. This is where my problem lies. I realize that this is "just a message board", but that is still no excuse for not having consistency.

As for the NFL Draft thread specifically, if there were so many  posts, then why did whoever changed it decide to wait 5 or 6 days to change it instead of when those posts were occurring? Especially considering that there were not that many of those types of posts and 99% of the time we were discussing picks people made or other topics related to the draft.

I guess I just don't see why when a thread is changed to chat that all posts made UP TO that point can't count. And also why the problem of PWing and people having high post counts is only a concern for the Lounge. It is just as much a vital part of this community as the Hot Deals section.

i changed the thread while i was cleaning it up. it was easier for me that way. during the draft i was more intereested in the picks than the others.

just looking at the first 2 pages of the thread, i saw 32 "waiting/chatty" posts. got bored of counting after that. i really don't see that as 99% of the posts.

"t. I just don't think it is fair to take away posts from everyone just because a couple of people might be dumb and get off topic in a particular thread for a few posts."

most threads that are changed into chat happen after we notice they've gone into post whoring. it sort of defeats the purpose of chatting htem if the count isn't removed from the thread.
