To display around 500 members it takes about 44KB. If this was removed and only available by clicking a link, it would reduce page download size and make the forums much faster.

I have seen sites get to about 600 KB just displaying members. Most people only care if a few people are on.

It's more than 1/3 the total size of the page.

44 KB on its own would be a relatively big page.

did you know that you can close it? just click on the little arrow in the upper right hand corner.

I don't know if that would help you or not :idontknow

Depends on who you sample from. But I don't know the usage statistics for this site, which is what is really relevant.

I am not on dialup. It only takes 2 or 3 secs. This is not for me. This would reduce the amount of bandwidth that SD's host needs. It would also probably cut down on processing for each page.

OK example, 500 members displayed in that panel, and 1500 visitors. So in total there are 2000 visitors.

44KB * 2000 = 88,000 KB = 85 MB

44KB is nothing. 85MB is another story.

So for 2000 page views in "Hot Deals", the most viewed, the SD servers send 85MB of data that is more than likely not needed.

I don't see a arrow to close the members. I do see something to close the "Quick Reply" box. I am mainly talking about this page (http://forums.slickdeals.net/forumdisplay.php?sduid=0&f=9), not individual threads.

OK, on this page, the forum index page

http://forums.slickdeals.net/index.php

I see the Show/Hide arrows. This does not stop it from being sent down the pipe to browsers still.

That's not going to save much bandwidth because the pages are compressed before they are sent out, which reduces the pages size. 44KB compressed takes up like 5-8KB

i think mr. sd is testing this out now. i don't see the users online anymore. give us your findings when you have some.

Someone suggested it awhile back and it was sitting half done until now. It defaults to off so if you want to see who's online, check UserCP under Edit Options.

Also, MaceX is correct. The page is compressed on the server before it is sent to the browser so it's not a huge savings on bandwidth. It's mostly for screen real estate.

I am also assuming that you took away the "People viewing this thread" too, since I don't see it anymore. Or is that just me?

Stop the dial-up crapping. All we have in my area is dial-up and cable. And, I do not want cable. I already have a satellite dish for TV and am very happy with it. Soooooooo YES I HAVE DIAL-UP. Thank you.
